Just 1 hour from Rafina, the seaside village dominates a charming landscape, offering great dining options. The beautiful Marmari is built amphitheatrically, with a panoramic view of the homonymous bay and the idyllic Petalios. Even today, the atmosphere in some places down at the harbour still gives the feeling of being in a fishing village. And, rightly so, since for many years it was just that, before it became a favourite holiday resort in South Evia. The village began to be slowly established in the s, by people with fishing experience, who arrived in South Evia as internal immigrants from Argolida and from Vatika and Neapolis in Laconia. Tourist development would occur later, in the s and s, when Athenian family men with low incomes started to come here for summer bathing. In fact, the first guest accommodation infrastructure was created by the father of the current hotelier Thanasis Zafiris, who owns 'Marmari Bay'. In our days, of course, things are very different. Apart from Greeks, the tourist crowd in Marmari includes visitors from central Europe and Italy, as well as several Dutch people, and recently the Romanian market has opened up. Apart from general tourism, the village has also been at the centre of special tourism: the stunning beach of Megali Ammos or Golden Beach , with its characteristic 'sandy tongue', featured in the Ministry of Tourism's promotional spot for and was discussed worldwide. It is a place caught by the north wind, so every summer it changes shape depending on the wind direction and the direction of the waves. Which, in turn, creates the spectacular, horseshoe-shaped 'tongue' of sand that penetrates the sea. Long before this display, however, Marmari was - and continues to be - an international hot spot for wind surfers and kite surfers. After all, already in it was featured by National Geographic along with the Petal Islands as one of the top 10 destinations around t. Apart from Megali Ammos, there are other unique beaches around Marmari to seduce you, among the most beautiful in Greece. But away from the sea, the lush green gorge of Dimosaris in the heart of Mount Ochi will lead you to waterfalls, ponds and countless mountain beauties, before finally joining the sea, creating dreamlike landscapes. As for the food always one of the main parts of a good holiday life , you can expect incredibly nice tavernas with local cuisine, as well as hotel restaurants with a point of view. As it gets darker and you're back from your excursions to beaches and gullies, a walk will relax you and give you that carefree 'something' of a summer evening. From 8 o'clock onwards, the main road to the harbour becomes a pedestrian walkway. So you can stroll around at your leisure, ride your bike, sit in taverns, cafes and bars, enjoy fish, ouzo and drinks, listen to stories and gossip - and for the children there is a playground and an amusement park. If you stay in accommodation with a kitchen, you can buy fresh fish from the boats and seiners that arrive daily at the port. There are also the cultural events held every year by the municipality of Karystia to which Marmari belongs , which will give you opportunities for fun and relaxation. For information about the program look at the Facebook of the Cultural Organization of the Municipality of Karystos 'Windmills'. And one more thing: since last year there is a ferry line from Karystos to Syros, Tinos and Andros, twice a week. Information at the Port Authority and tickets at 'Set Tours' The routes start in June and the distance from Marmari to Karystos is 13 km. At the famous and very spectacular Megali Ammos you can enjoy almost all aspects of a dream beach life. The beach is organised, with its sunbeds and umbrellas, there is a beach bar with snacks, drinks and refreshments, and occasionally music events are hosted. At night the rocks are lit up, there is a DJ and the atmosphere becomes super fancy and summery. There are also wind surfing and kite surfing schools on the beach. Finally, close to Megali Ammos is Zastani beach, which not many people know about. You'll take a passable path and you'll love the clear, turquoise waters, fine pebbles and imposing rocks that surround it. For the record, during the Turkish occupation, the summer residences of the harem of Omer Pasha were located there. After his departure in , the islands were purchased by Ioannis Paparrigopoulos, ambassador of Greece to Russia. He was so enchanted by the beauty of this 'dowry' that he thought of building his summer palace here - he even commissioned the plans to the famous architect Ernst Chiller. In the end, of course, they were built in Tatoi, so George sold the Petalios to the shipowner family Empeirikos. In the process, many of the lands were resold to representatives of the international elite, such as Paloma Picasso Pablo Picasso's daughter , the shipowner Karnezis or the David family in our days. In the old days, no 'commoner' could approach the Petalios, as they were private property. Today, however, the Greek state has made it clear that the beaches are public, so everyone has the right of access. So take your kayak or your own boat and go swim, explore the beautiful seabed and bask in their sand. The beach of Giannitsi north of the homonymous village, above Marmari is relatively deserted, has sand and fine pebbles and, like many of the beaches of southern Evia, it receives a stream, which descends from the mountains. Above it, meanwhile, rises the famous Venetian castle of Filagra, with its ruins awe-inspiring as they stand built on a steep rock. The view from here is awesome and validates the strategic choice of location, as it overlooks all the southeastern coast of Evia, as well as the strait of Kafireas, which separates it from Andros. On the beach you will also find the canteen 'Giannitsi Kantina Beach', with good local cuisine. Finally, a little further up, a couple of visual artists have created the 'Vivarte-Nature' multi-purpose space, where they run photography and body painting workshops, as well as a theme cultural park with installations. They organize experiential art events, welcome students and provide hospitality by arrangement. Right where the gorge of Dimosaris gushes out, creating a wonderful landscape as the fresh water joins the sea, is the Aegean beach of Kallianos, at the end of an easy downhill highway. Crystal clear waters, which deepen steeply, sand and thick white pebbles. There are no umbrellas and sunbeds, but in summer you will see many tents. A sense of freedom and generally a situation for a few -especially when the wind blows. The beach of Agios Dimitrios Schinodavleia is of fabulous beauty and one of the most beautiful in all of Greece. You will reach it by descending and turning down a steep dirt road. The stream of Porphyra reaches the sea, forming a pond with cool water, while next to it stands a cave with stalactites. Green trees on the banks and a small bridge over the stream. Blue, clear water, white, fine white pebbles. In August, get ready for heavy crowds and lots of campers. The dazzlingly beautiful, secluded beach of Archampolis can only be reached by boat. Perched in the cove of a bay in the area of Cape Doro, surrounded by bare, imposing rocks, with white, fine sand and blue waters, it welcomes the Archampolis Gorge, which starts with its torrent from the high peaks of Ochi. From the chapel of Agios Georgios, you can also enjoy the view of the sea, with the eye reaching as far as Andros. Read more at travel. The favourite resort of South Evia with the 'exotic' beauties.
