Zenci literally means black person, and it was never associated with racism. Lately, some people started to pick zenci as a translation of the Word 'nigger' due to the lack of an equivalent word and forced a negative meaning to it. However, my uni friends were completely Okay with it because it is the way of adressing black people in Turkish.
Yeah sadly some people do that and claim 'zenci' is rude and racist. In fact, it's been used to refer black people without any bad intentions for ages. But of course, it also depends on how you use it. You can turn any word into an insult with your intonation and gestures.
