While I hate the end of any trip, it’s been a fun last weekend spent here in China. As I’ve mentioned, I’ve had the great privilege of meeting wonderful people here in China, and so I took advantage of the weekend to spend time with them. Yesterday I spent the evening with Wan, Chuqiao, Ethan, and my roommates. I offered to visit them up and their campus since they are always so kind to travel one hour down to our campus (same school, two campuses), but turns out there’s actually nothing interesting at their campus so in the end we found a more middle point. We went to a nice restaurant in the mall where I tried my first duck blood soup! And I must say I loved it! Maybe I’m secretly a vampire…? Cuz everyone told me to beware of the bloody sausage in Argentina too, and turns out it’s one of my favorite things. With the duck blood soup though, I think it’s actually just the soup I love, the duck blood itself just comes in solid cubes but the broth with tofu is amazing. It was a super nice meal and only came out to be about $6. Afterwards, our friends had reserved online movie tickets to go see a new Taiwanese movie. Of course there were subtitles, but I was surprisingly encouraged by how much I could understand (of course constantly checking the subtitles, but still J). The movie was super cute, a love story that left half the audience in tears, including some of my friends. If I was a movie crier, I probably would’ve shed some tears too, but I’m not. Of the two Chinese movies I’ve seen in theaters, I really like them! I think I’ll continue...
Since we’d heard all the hype about travelling during National Holiday in China, we were left with a valid question: what CAN we do during the National Holiday? When we had told my friend Wan that we were just going to stay in Nanjing, he said even THAT would be crazy. So what exactly were we to do? That’s when the genius idea crossed our minds – we could go to the countryside, to his house! It made for a pretty funny conversation, because he thought it would be awesome, but we all knew that it would be a super weird thing to tell his parents. “You’re what? Bringing three foreign girls home with you??” We asked if his parents thought it would be weird, and he confirmed by saying “absolute weird!” Then he said “you guys will be the first…” to which I budded in “foreigners to stay in your house!” He responded, “well, yeah, that too, but the first females.” And so we went, three girls of three different races (my Ecuadorian friend and my half-Caribbean roommate) to stay at his house in the “countryside!” Now, I put the word “countryside” in quotes because you must understand that the Chinese version of a “small town” is not anything like the American version of a small town. Of course, we imagine going to a small town of 8-10,000 people, but Jinhu’s population is roughly around 300,000. I suppose in comparison to Nanjing’s 8+million people, yeah, it’s small. We arrived in the morning to the bus station where Wan was waiting for us and fetched us a taxi to go to his home. His parents live in a very new and beautiful apartment complex. Wan had warned us not to set our expectations too...
National Holiday in China = Every National Everywhere you want to go Day They said to not leave our house during the National Holiday. They said it would be CRAZY. They said it wouldn’t be worth it to go anywhere. So they said. Well, what did I decide to do? Go to Shanghai! Of course, why not? And… it WAS crazy. Maybe they had a reason for what they said. Day one we had planned to visit a small canal village called Qibao. After buying our tickets and entering the town, we quickly found ourselves in the middle of hundreds of others without any room to move. Somehow we made it through, but by the time we were leaving the police were directing the traffic so that each street was just one-way. Next on our agenda was the aquarium. When we arrived to the aquarium, we quickly changed our minds when we saw the line stretched down the block. So we decided to get tickets to ride the hop-on-hop-off double decker tour bus that was at the curb. Well, that turned into adventure! We wanted to first take it to the edge of the Pudong area and ride across the river to Shanghai in a boat, which was included in the fare. Once we arrived to the edge of the river, we got in “line” (really just a giant swarm of people), and when the gates opened we were literally pushed here and there until we arrived where they scanned the tickets. Somebody taking the tickets had to grab my arm and yank me through when I got body slammed against the divider. Wow. I’m not surprised anymore how people die in giant crowds of people (which speaking of, has actually happened in the...
The heat has returned!!! And apparently it´s only Springtime, what?? I`m already dying! But bueno… This week was great, and fast as always! We`re on a people finding hunt like crazy. And we`re finding some good ones! We have another baptism coming up-another young adult that we contacted in the park the other week and came to church! His best friend is serving a mission in Brasil right now and already knows a lot, so we`re super excited to prepare him to be baptized! We had stake conference this weekend, and it was excellent. President Alliaud spoke in the two sessions and was super firm about the missionary work. He said that if every family is really concerened about the salvation of their own family, then they are concerned about the growth of the church in their area. He invited every family to kneel down in prayer, and if they have only a desire, to call the missionaries and ask what they can do. He talked about the war that we are living in, the war that didn`t start when we born, nor that will end simply when we die. He was super powerful, and it was incredible. The rest of the focus was about preparing your kids to serve a mission, and it was really neat. I realized that my parents are the best, and the checklist that they had given was completed as I thought about all my experiences at home. Thanks! What else? Hmmm… nothing to exciting to note! Just another week in paradise. Had a great interview with President, and I learned a lot. Just trying to take advantage of every minute – I can`t believe you have my flight itinerary! So weird. I still feel like a baby in...
Well, this week was incredible! And it was super funny because yesterday we were talking to the zone leaders and they asked änd what did you do to have all this success?¨ We replied with the real answer, but then later thought of another too! First, we replied that prayer and fasting. So true. We had to go on two exchanges this week, along with divisions with the sisters in our apartment, and so we only had a couple of days in our own area. On Wednesday we couldn`t get it contact with any of our investigators, and we were a little frustrated because we have a bunch of new people we had found that were incredible, and had even come to church, but it seemed like the whole world was hiding from us! So we decided to fast, and miracles happened! Our investigator from France my companion found in the street and he told us that his phone had broken and the wanted to contact us but couldn`t because he didn`t know our number! Then another that came to church last Sunday sent us a message about how much he wanted us to teach him more! Then another that we couldn`t work our schedule out with gave us a time to visit him! And then came to chruch on Sunday. And we want to baptise the 3 ASAP! And we also had a great lesson with an investigator that we`ve had for a lot of time, but haven`t been able to see in about a month! So yes, the power of fasting is real. But later, we went to the park to teach two new investigators we met in the street, and after we realized an interesting connection, and a good advise to...
Well, this week was insane! But awesome! First off, we had a baptism!! It was a real miracle. We were on exchanges in another city and we were planning on staying another day to do another exchange, but in the night the other Hermanas had called us and couldn`t enter the apartment because somebody had robbed their keys. So we had to return home immediately Tuesday night (we were 4 hours away!) to let them in. The zone leaders had passed by for our investigator, Maicol, Tuesday because we were planning in being gone for 2 days, and they said that it went really well and the Maicol was ready to be baptized this Saturday! One problem: he still didn`t live in our area (we started teaching him with a member and he had already expressed that he wanted to move into the city). So we decided that we`d dedicate Wednesday to help him find a pension or something since we didn`t have any plans, and we said a prayer and set off to find one! We really had no idea how to find one, because he didn`t really want anything legit-just a room to rent somewhere. So we started calling whatever number we saw and asked for the cheapest that they had, and then talking to everybody we saw in the street. And he wanted something really specific too-between his work and the church, and on top of everything inside our area! Well, God answers prayers, and miraculously we found a room exactly between his work and the church, and only a few blocks from institute! The previous man living there had left just the morning of, and Maicol came to look at it with us and right there decided with the owner...
Dear Family and friends, I hope you all saw conference!! I`m still missing Saturday morning, because there is opposition in all things!!! We woke up Saturday to a crazy thunder storm with rain like crazy. But of course, it was conference, so we walked to the bus stop in the pouring rain, and arrived at the stake center, drenched! And we were the only ones, along with 3 or 4 other members 🙂 The power had went out in the whole chapel, so we patiently waited the whole first session and it never came back. It still didn`t come back for the next session, but thankfully we judged the situation well and headed back to Nueva Cordoba with 2 of the members that came to watch at their house. But, the next day was beautiful! And our 2 awesome investigators-Berry (from France) and Maicol (from Perú)-came! Maicol even stayed for the 2 sessions, and loved it. He told my companion that he felt something inside but didn`t know how to describe it: the SPIRIT!!! It was super great because all the elders were there and conveniently another Elder in our district is from Perú and is a recent convert of 1 year. Well, he shared his whole story with Maicol and super excited him to be baptized (although we already had him on date!), and so there we have a baptism! We`re just working on finding him a house now in our area because when we found him last week he told his that he doesn`t live in our area, but that he`s looking to move. So we put the committment of him finding a house inside the area (a new committment we invented), and he`s down with it so he can be baptized,...
