Karen Read Trial: Defense Claims Evidence Tampering as Jury Deliberations Begin

Dedham, MA — June 10, 2024 — The high-profile murder trial of Karen Read, accused of killing her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, took a dramatic turn Monday as defense attorneys alleged critical evidence was mishandled—or even tampered with—by investigators.

Read, 44, faces charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence, and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death. Prosecutors claim she struck O’Keefe with her SUV during a snowstorm in January 2022 after a night of drinking, leaving him to die outside a Canton home.

But defense attorney David Yannetti argued in closing arguments that key pieces of evidence—including taillight fragments and snow patterns—were either ignored or manipulated. 'This isn’t just a rush to judgment; it’s a railroad job,' Yannetti told jurors, suggesting O’Keefe may have been beaten inside the home and later dragged outside.

The defense has long contended that Read is a scapegoat for a cover-up involving local law enforcement. They pointed to conflicting testimony from first responders and the absence of forensic evidence linking Read’s vehicle to O’Keefe’s injuries.

Prosecutors, however, dismissed the tampering claims as baseless. 'The defendant’s own words and actions prove her guilt,' said Assistant DA Adam Lally, referencing Read’s alleged statements at the scene and cellphone data placing her there.

After six weeks of testimony, the jury began deliberations late Monday. The case, which has drawn national attention and protests from Read’s supporters, could reach a verdict this week.
