CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have charged a 15-year-old with the shooting death of another 15-year-old in northeast Charlotte back in February.
According to the CMPD, detectives with the department’s Violent Crime Apprehension Team arrested the teen without incident on Tuesday and charged the individual with murder. Due to the age, the suspect’s name will not be released, authorities said.
The shooting happened just before 10:40 p.m. on Feb. 18 on Mallard Park Drive in northeast Charlotte .
When officers arrived on scene, they located the victim with a gunshot wound lying outside near the apartments at the address. On Feb. 20, the victim died from his injuries, making it a homicide investigation.
Family members identified the victim as 15-year-old Martin Solano-Tashpulatova.
Kamilla Tashpulatova, the teen’s mother, spoke to WBTV in the weeks after her son’s killing. She said her son was a good boy and a good big brother, explaining that he was very bright and was even fluent in three different languages.
“He wanted to be a real estate agent. He could drive cars. He was very smart for his age,” said Tashpulatova.
It is unclear exactly what led to the deadly shooting, but Kamilla Tashpulatova said she thinks jealousy could have been a motive. She said she thinks her son was planning to meet up with someone when he was shot.
“They set my baby up,” said Tashpulatova. “He didn’t die from COVID or cancer. He got shot in the back. They just stole that from me. They killed my baby.”
After CMPD announced that an arrest had been made, WBTV spoke to Will Adams, the founder of Team Trublue, a Charlotte nonprofit dedicated to preventing community violence. Adams said that he is reminded of his own son’s killing, when he hears about teen violence.
“That touches me to the heart. My son was 15. Any time I’m hearing a 14, 15, 16, 17 year-old doing something like this or being killed, it just takes me back to mine,” said Adams.
Adams said he’s not surprised when he hears about teenagers committing and falling victim to serious crimes.
“Now what you’re seeing is a lot more of the senseless violence, senseless crimes are these teens,” said Adams.
Adams has made it his life’s work to help prevent violence in Charlotte. Through Team Trublue, he promotes peace and helps organize events designed to keep young people out of trouble. He encourages others to give back to the community and he offered advice for parents.
“You’re gonna have to listen to the music they’re listening too. You’re gonna need Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat passwords. You’re gonna need to be able to access their social media just like they access it,” said Adams.
Authorities said the investigation into Solano-Tashpulatova’s death is ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit detective.
