Kakariki Grove Waikanae: A Hidden Gem Unveiled

Waikanae, New Zealand — A quiet tract tucked behind suburban lanes has stepped into the sun, unveiling what locals are calling a hidden gem. Kakariki Grove, a native-bush remnant along the western edge of Waikanae, opened to the public on Saturday after a year of careful restoration led by the Kapiti District Council in partnership with volunteers from the Waikanae Environment Society.

The project transformed a neglected patch into a welcoming nature space with a new boardwalk, improved tracks, and interpretive signage in both te reo Māori and English. A native-plant corridor now winds through the grove, featuringuzo rauk?—kept intentionally simple and vibrant—so visitors can learn as they walk. Birds have started to return, with sightings of pīwakawaka and distant green kākāriki flitting through the treetops, proof of the place’s growing health.

Council Environment Portfolio holder, Rajan Patel, called the unveiling a milestone for the town. 'This space isn’t just a pocket of bush; it’s a bridge between people and the land, a place for family visits, school trips, and quiet moments with a view of nature,' he said.

Residents and volunteers origin stories came to life during the opening ceremony, when residents shared memories of the grove as a kid’s playground and a habitat that once struggled amid creeping weed and erosion. Today, guided weekend tours, a small welcome hut, and accessible paths invite everyone to discover the grove’s quiet charm. As spring settles in, Kakariki Grove stands ready to welcome new stories to its growing chorus of birds, rustling leaves, and footsteps along its new routes.
