After careful consideration, you answer, "I'd like to stay here with you a while longer."

Kaa looks pleased. "I'm glad to hear it. You can leave anytime you like, but I'd like for you to stay with me indefinitely."

Life continues after that much as it did the previous few weeks. You're glad to know that you really could leave whenever you like. You're glad to know exactly what Kaa has hypnotized you to do. And you really enjoy letting Kaa hypnotize you much of the day every day.

After about another month, you approach Kaa one day and say, "How do you hypnotize people?"

Kaa thinks you're asking to be hypnotized and replies, "How about a demonstration? What do you want me to hypnotize you to do?"

"No, no. That's not what I meant. I'm curious how it works. Why it works."

Kaa gives you a puzzled look. He thinks for a minute, then says, "I'm not sure that I get your question. But I might be able to give you the answer you're looking for. I have six colors of rings, and they all have different effects.

"Green makes you lose control of your will. Blue makes you obey me. Blue rings don't do anything without green. Those two are the basic ones that I need in order to hypnotize anyone. Green without blue would just make you relax and be unresponsive to anything I ask. And I need at least two colors of rings to alternate or else nothing works.

"Yellow is the color that brings you the bliss that you've noticed. I can hypnotize you without yellow rings and it works just as well, but you wouldn't like it. So I always include yellow rings for you. Orange rings make you remember what happened while you were hypnotized. If I omit orange, you can remember much of the induction, and then don't remember anything that happened until I wake you up.

"Red puts you in a very deep trance so that I can give you permanent commands that you'll obey even after you wake up. I've been told that the memory of this is very painful, so I never mix orange with red. Purple puts you to sleep for the night. Orange and red basically don't do anything if I also use purple. If you're asleep, then you won't remember it anyway, and won't be receptive to permanent commands. Does that answer your question?"

You nod. "That's interesting. You seem to always use green, blue, and yellow, and usually orange. Occasionally you use purple, sometimes with orange mixed in. And you hardly ever use red. I guess that explains it."

"I don't need red rings for you any more, as I've already given you the few permanent commands that I need to. I can if there's something else you'd like me to permanently hypnotize you to do, but otherwise, I'll avoid it."

"Thanks for the offer. I'll keep it in mind, but don't have anything I can think of right now. What happens if you don't use green or blue?"

"But do use which colors?"

"Yellow. Yellow and something else."

Kaa laughs. "I don't think I've tried hypnotizing someone without green or blue. Want to try yellow and orange and see what happens?"

"Certainly. I'd love to try it."

Kaa smiles and moves his head closer to yours. "Just look me in the eyes and we'll find out."

You stare at Kaa's eyes and see a yellow ring appear, then orange, then yellow again. They alternate yellow, orange, yellow, orange, and so forth. It seems to bring you the usual euphoria much faster than normal, but you don't feel your mind becoming hazy or thoughts slowing down.

After a bit, Kaa asks, "So how is it?"

"Wow, this is great. It feels as good as if I'm hypnotized, but I don't feel hypnotized at all."

"Want to keep going?"

"Yeah."

You continue to stare at the yellow and orange rings in Kaa's eyes for several more minutes, and continue the conversation.

Finally Kaa stops then and says, "I think that's about enough."

The pleasure that the magical rings brought you wears off over the course of the next couple of minutes. You say, "Thank you. That was amazing. It didn't hypnotize me, but I sure enjoyed it. I can still feel it, too, though I can feel it wearing off."

Kaa nods. "Interesting. Any other combinations that you'd like to try?"

"I'd like to try just yellow and purple tonight, to see what happens. But not right now. Say, would it work to hypnotize me slowly?"

"Hypnotize you slowly?"

"Mostly yellow and orange, but with an occasional green and blue mixed in. I love your hypnotic inductions."

"I'm not sure what would happen. We could try it. Want to try it now?"

"Sure."

"What do you want me to hypnotize you to do?"

"Hmm... I'm not sure. You can pick something. I'm more interested in trying a slow induction."

Kaa puts his head back in front of yours and starts the colored rings in his eyes. The rings alternate between yellow and orange, but then there's a green one instead of an orange at one point. And then a blue ring replaces the orange a little later. You stare at the rings: yellow, orange, yellow, orange, yellow, orange, yellow, green, yellow, orange, yellow, orange, yellow, orange, yellow, blue, and then the pattern repeats.

Kaa says, "So is it working?"

You reply, "Mmm... this is nice. I don't feel hypnotized yet, but let's continue."

"All right. Then continue we shall."

You continue to stare into Kaa's eyes. After a while you say, "I can feel your hypnosis starting to take effect. This feels really, really nice, by the way. Much better than normal."

"So you like half yellow rings better than a quarter yellow?"

"Oh yeah. This is more intense, and draws out the best part for longer."

You continue chatting with Kaa as you stare into his eyes and slowly let him take control of your mind. After a couple more minutes, you're unable to speak further, so the conversation ceases. Kaa can tell that he's slowly hypnotizing you, so he continues the rings without speaking. At this point, you're unable to do anything other than stare into Kaa's eyes. Not that you'd want to do anything apart from focus on such a magnificent sight: yellow, orange, yellow, orange, yellow, orange, yellow, green, yellow, orange, yellow, orange, yellow, orange, yellow, blue...

*PING*

You're finally hypnotized, and both you and Kaa know it. Kaa makes you do some simple things to verify that it works as normal.

Then Kaa says, "Wake up. So how was it?"

You smile. "That was incredible. Could you hypnotize me like that every time? I loved the experience of feeling my will slowly draining away as you took control a little bit at a time."

Kaa smiles. "I'm glad you liked it. And sure we could make this the standard induction for most purposes."

And so it is. Kaa usually takes several minutes to hypnotize you, and sometimes reduces the proportion of blue and green rings to much less than it was that first time, to draw it out much longer. Occasionally Kaa hypnotizes you quickly if he needs to for some purpose, but you understand that he can't take 10 minutes every single time.

About a month later, you say to Kaa, "Do you ever eat? Because I've never seen you eat anything."

Kaa nods. "I have a meal once per week. I hypnotize you to relax for a while, then I take one of my slaves and go hunting."

"One of your slaves?"

"Yes. I have thirteen slaves, all Nagas from neighboring villages. I have hypnotized each to come four times per year on specified dates to go on a hunting trip with me. They help me find suitable prey, then I hypnotized it and eat it."

This worries you. "Am I one of your slaves?"

Kaa laughs. "No, you're my friend. You're nice to me, but my slaves never do anything more for me than I hypnotize them to do. Such jerks."

Now you're really worried. "Do they like being your slaves?"

Kaa laughs. "Nah, they hate me."

"They don't even like being hypnotized?"

"I don't use yellow rings for them. Just for you."

You decide to press your luck. "Well of course they hate you. You're cruel to them. I'd hate you too if you treated me like that."

Kaa winces at your statement, takes a minute to think, and then says, "You hate me, too?"

You say somberly, "No. But I think you need to reconsider how you treat other people."

"Why? They're jerks. If I didn't hypnotize them to obey me, they'd run away and never come back unless it was to try to kill me."

You sigh. "Kaa, look. What do the nagas know about you? They know that if given the chance, you'll hypnotize them and force them to do things they don't want to do. And they hate it. So they think you're evil, and treat you accordingly. And since that's all that they know about you, it's perfectly reasonable for them to act that way."

Kaa hisses at you. "Well I can't just not eat."

"I could help you hunt."

"You don't know the wildlife around here, or the hunting methods."

"Have you tried being nice to any Nagas to see if they'd help you hunt?"

"It wouldn't do any good. They all hate me. Even the ones who have never met me."

"Because you've given them good reason to hate you. Give them good reason to like you and they will."

Kaa hisses at you again. "Fine then. What do you think I ought to do? Keep in mind that starvation is not an option."

"Let's look at the logistics of your hunting trip. What exactly happens?"

Kaa eyes you warily, but explains, "I've hypnotized all of my slaves to come here at certain times on certain dates. Every Tuesday, one of them arrives early in the afternoon. I hypnotize you to relax, and keep you out of the way so that you and the slave don't see each other.

"When the slave gets here, I hypnotize him. I make him go on a hunting trip with me. He is supposed to look around for danger and warn me. He also looks for suitable prey. Once we find a suitable meal for me, I hypnotize the animal and eat it. Then I wake up the slave and let him go home."

You say, "The first thing you need to do is to be polite. Apologize for forcing them to come, saying that you have to eat. Tell them that you're going to try to be nicer. Tell them that you're going to try to make the experience fun for them. When you hypnotize your slaves, what colors of rings do you use?"

Kaa replies, "Most of the time, only green and blue. If I need to give them permanent commands, then green, blue, and red. For those, I hypnotize them, give them the commands, wake them up, and then hypnotize them again with just green and blue."

"Try making it green, blue, yellow, and orange, like you do for me. And when you need to do permanent commands, make it green, blue, red, and yellow. They'll like the yellow rings. And it will also help that they remember how fun it was to be hypnotized on the hunting trips."

"And then what? Just go hunting as normal?"

"Yes, but try to be polite. At the end of the trip, bring the slave back here and wake him up. Let me talk to him. I'll explain that you're actually friendly and what happened before was just a big misunderstanding."

Kaa laughs at you. "And you think they'll believe that?"

You smile. "Words alone, no. But words and actions together, yes. The next thing you do is, at the end of the hunting trip, invite the slave to stay longer. Tell him that you want to be friends, and don't want to consider him a slave anymore. Never, ever address him as a slave. Offer to hypnotize him to do whatever he wants you to hypnotize him to do, or to let him remain awake and just chat--with either or both of us. And make it clear that if he wants to leave right after the hunting trip rather than staying a while, he's free to do that. And if he wants to leave immediately, then let him."

Kaa laughs and shakes his head. "That's not going to accomplish a bit of good. My slaves will all leave as soon as the hunting trip is over. As I told you, they hate me."

"The first time, you're probably right. But when they remember how much they enjoyed the hunting trip--and they will enjoy it if you use yellow rings when hypnotizing them--it will have an effect. When they see that you really do give them a real choice of whether to leave or stay longer, it will have an effect. Eventually they'll figure out that you mean it, and you really do want to be friends."

Kaa ponders your proposal for a while. "Fine then. That sounds harmless enough. I'll do what you propose--just to prove to you that it won't work. Nagas are jerks."

Two days later, Kaa hypnotizes you to relax, and tells you that one of his slaves is coming that day. After eating his weekly meal, Kaa returns and wakes you up. Kaa tells you that the woman is named Shanti and speaks English somewhat, and then wakes her up.

You introduce yourself, and then add, "I'm a friend of Kaa. I've been trying to explain to him how to get along with his hunting partners better. How did you enjoy your hunting trip?"

Shanti eyes you warily, hesitates, and then says, "You're another of Kaa's slaves?"

You laugh. "No, no. Not a slave. Just a friend. Did you enjoy your hunting trip?"

Shanti glares at you. "I hate it when Kaa forces me to come here. And you're helping him now?"

"What about today? Was today any different from most? Do you remember what happened?"

Shanti's face mellows visibly. "Actually, yeah. I remember the whole trip this time. And it actually felt really nice."

"And don't you think it would be better if every time were like this one?"

Shanti glares at you again. "What would be better is if Kaa didn't make me come here at all."

"But don't you think this time was better than the last?"

Shanti sighs. "Fine. If those are the only alternatives, then yes, this time was better than last time."

"Kaa can make it so that people enjoy being hypnotized by him. He didn't realize that he was supposed to. I'm trying to help him learn how to be friendlier. Kaa can actually be pretty nice once you get to know him."

Kaa had been silent while listening to this exchange, but now says, "Why don't you hang around for a while longer? We could get to know each other, and become friends. I'll hypnotize you if you want me to, and not if you don't."

Shanti looks at you as though she thinks you're crazy, then looks back at Kaa. "Umm, sorry, but I really want to leave now."

Kaa looks down and says, "If that's your choice, then have a nice trip home."

Shanti's eyes get big as she says, "You mean that you're actually going to let me leave, and not make me stay as long as you want?"

"I'd like for you to stay longer, but it's up to you."

Shanti turns and starts to walk away, "Then I'm leaving. Good bye."

"Good bye."

You and Kaa watch Shanti walk away. Once she is out of sight, Kaa says to you, "See? I told you that she'd leave."

"Try it again next time. When you've been cruel to people for an extended period of time, you have to be nice for a while before they'll believe you've changed."

"This isn't going to work. You are being so ridiculous."

"You even admitted that it was harmless."

"Fine. I'll do it again next time. But I'm only doing this for you."

The next week, Kaa asks his next slave to stay a while longer after the hunt, and he refuses. And the same happens the week after, and then again the week after that. All thirteen of Kaa's slaves refuse to stay any longer than they have to.

But then it is time for Shanti to visit again. This time, after Kaa and Shanti return, Kaa wakes you up to talk with Shanti again. After Kaa wakes Shanti, you ask, "So how was the hunt this time?"

Shanti answers, "It was great. I've been looking forward to it."

Kaa looks at you innocently and says, "I did not hypnotize her to say that."

Shanti laughs. "After last time, I thought maybe I had been too harsh on you. It was a lot of fun last time, even though I wouldn't admit it."

Kaa then says, "Would you like to stay a while longer?"

Shanti answers, "How much longer?"

"You'll need to leave before the next hunting partner comes. But you could stay for up to a week. You can leave anytime you like."

Shanti smiles. "I told the people in my village that Kaa might force me to stay an extra day this time. So they shouldn't worry about me unless I don't come back tomorrow, either."

Kaa perks up. "Does that mean you'll stay a while?"

"For one more day. I'm curious about what goes on here."

Shanti stays for the rest of the day, spends the night, and leaves the next afternoon. During that time, Kaa first hypnotizes you while Shanti watches. After he wakes you up, Shanti asks to be hypnotized to do various things, and Kaa obliges. Kaa takes Shanti up into the trees to walk around barefoot, and she loves it. When it finally comes time for Shanti to leave, she seems sorry to go.

As time passes, more and more of Kaa's other hunting partners agree to stay longer. Within two years, they all want to stay the full week every time. Kaa eventually explains what he has hypnotized his former slaves to do and undoes a lot of the commands.

A little bit after this, on a day when Kaa would normally hunt, he tells you that someone new is coming and he wants you to meet her. Shortly after lunch, Shanti returns as normal, but has a much younger woman with her as well.

Shanti points to her friend and says, "This is Anusha, the new hunting partner you requested."

Anusha seems happy to be there. "When I was growing up, I always heard that Kaa was evil. But Shanti says you're nice, and it's a lot of fun to be hypnotized. She says that Kaa's hunting partners keep that a secret because they want Kaa to be mostly left alone."

You and Kaa both laugh. Kaa says, "So Shanti explained what goes on here?"

"Yeah, once we got into the forest."

"You're ready for me to hypnotize you?"

"Yep. I'm looking forward to it."

You and Shanti both watch as Kaa hypnotizes Anusha, using red rings to give her permanent commands. You can't understand what Kaa is saying, but Shanti doesn't seem alarmed. Then Kaa wakes Anusha; hypnotizes her again; this time with green, blue, yellow, and orange rings; and heads off into the jungle with her.

Once Kaa is out of earshot, you ask, "What did Kaa say to Anusha?"

"Oh that? That was Nagamese, the local language. It's best to use a person's native language when giving him permanent commands, to avoid any confusion."

"So what commands did he give Anusha?"

"Basically the same ones he said he gave me. She would come here on the specified days, enjoy being hypnotized, and wouldn't attack him."

Shanti is quiet for a bit, then adds, "I'm going to miss coming here."

"You're not coming back?"

"Kaa likes hunting partners around ages 18-30, and I'm getting too old." After another pause, Shanti adds, "I really should head home. You should know that you'll forever be known in this part of the world as the one who tamed Kaa."

You say good bye, and Shanti starts walking home. Later, when Kaa and Anusha return, Anusha says that she loved the hunting trip, and definitely wants to stay an entire week. Anusha experiments quite a bit with what Kaa can hypnotize her to do, and clearly loves the
