Card Ranking

The ranking for Kierki is traditional. Ace is high followed by King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2 (low). In the first half of the game, there is no trump suit, but in the second half, a new trump suit is picked each deal and ranks higher than the other suits.

GAMEPLAY

The game is split into two parts. The first half of the game is called Rozgrywka and the aim is to not win tricks. The second half of the game is called Odgrywka and the aim is to win as many tricks as possible and also be the first to complete a game of Fan Tan.

Rozgrywka

The first half of the game consists of 7 deals. There are no trumps for this half and each deal has a total of 13 tricks that can be won. The scoring for this half of the game is done in negative points and varies for each deal. (see below)

The deals are played clockwise starting with the player left of the dealer. They may lead a card to the trick and other players must follow. When following you must follow suit if able, but if you cannot, you may play any card you wish to the trick. Again, the goal of this half of the game is to avoid winning tricks. The winner of the trick is the player who played the highest card of the suit led and will lead the next trick.

SCORING

The scoring is different based on which deal the players are playing. Scores are kept throughout the game and are cumulative. You can have a negative score.

For the first deal, each trick won by a player is worth negative 20 points.

For the second deal, each heart won by a player is worth negative 20 points. Players can also not lead hearts, unless they have no other options, for this deal.

For the third deal, each queen won by a player is worth negative 60 points.

For the fourth deal, each jack or king won by a player is worth negative 30 points each.

In the fifth deal, the only penalty card is the king of hearts. The player who wins the king of hearts loses 150 points. In this deal, players are also not allowed to lead hearts unless it is their only option.

For the sixth deal, the seventh trick and last trick are penalized. The players who won these each lose 75 points.

For the seventh deal, all the above penalties are combined. If multiple penalties apply for a trick or card, they are all scored. As in deals 2 and 5, you may not lead hearts unless no other option is available.

The total of points that are lost in the first half of the game is totaled at 2600 points.

Odgrywka

In the second half of the game, you compete with the other players to earn points by winning tricks and completing a game of Fan Tan. The first part of this half consists of 4 deals and then the secondary game, also known as the little lottery, is played.

For the deals, the dealer will deal out the first 5 cards as normal and then pass dealing. They will look at their 5-card hand and call a trump suit based on their cards. Then they proceed with dealing as normal till each player hand all 13 cards for their hand.

After this, the game is started by the dealer who may lead any card to the trick. Following players must follow suit if able, but if not may play any card to the trick. Remember the goal of this half of the game is to win tricks. The winner of the trick is the player who played the highest trump if applicable, if no trumps, then it is awarded to the player with the highest card of the suit led. The winner earns 25 points for the trick and leads the next trick.

After the fourth deal is completed then the little lottery is played. Cards are dealt and played based on the rules of Fan Tan. The goal is to get rid of all your cards by playing them into the layout. The dealer starts the game and the first card that must be played to start each suit is a 7. After the suit is started the next higher or lower card in rank may be played to the layout. If you cannot play are card your turn is passed.

The first player to empty their hand earns 800 points and the second to empty their hand earns 500. This brings the total of all points earnable in the second half of the game to 2600.

END OF GAME

The game ends when the second player empties their hand in the little lottery. Players will finalize their scores and compare them. The player with the highest score wins.
