Chicago Cubs' Justin Steele Throws Complete Game Shutout in Dominant Performance Against Cardinals

Chicago, IL — May 15, 2024

Chicago Cubs left-hander Justin Steele delivered a masterclass on the mound Tuesday night, tossing a complete game shutout against the rival St. Louis Cardinals in a 4-0 victory at Wrigley Field.

Steele, 28, was in complete control from the first pitch, allowing just four hits while striking out nine and walking none. The Cardinals never advanced a runner past second base as Steele carved through their lineup with a devastating mix of fastballs and sliders.

'I felt like I had everything working tonight,' Steele said postgame. 'The defense was great behind me, and [catcher Yan Gomes] called a fantastic game. It’s always special to do this against a team like St. Louis.'

The performance lowered Steele’s season ERA to 2.45, further solidifying his status as one of the National League’s premier pitchers. Cubs manager Craig Counsell praised his ace, saying, 'Justin was phenomenal. When he’s commanding like that, he’s as tough as anyone in baseball.'

The Cubs backed Steele with timely hitting, including a two-run homer from Ian Happ in the third inning. But the night belonged to Steele, who recorded his first career complete game shutout in front of a roaring home crowd.

With the win, the Cubs moved to 24-18 on the season, tightening their grip on second place in the NL Central. Steele’s emergence as a true staff ace has been a major factor in their early success, and if Tuesday’s outing was any indication, he’s just getting started.

Next Up: Steele is expected to take the mound again Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers as the Cubs look to continue their hot streak.
