Chicago Cubs' Justin Steele Throws Complete Game Shutout Against Rival Cardinals

Chicago Cubs left-hander Justin Steele delivered a dominant performance Sunday night, tossing a complete game shutout against the St. Louis Cardinals in a crucial 3-0 victory at Wrigley Field.

Steele, 28, was in peak form, allowing just four hits while striking out eight and walking none. His efficient 102-pitch outing marked the first complete game shutout of his career, further solidifying his role as the Cubs' ace.

'I felt like I had everything working tonight,' Steele said postgame. 'The fastball command was there, the slider was sharp, and the defense behind me was incredible. It's always special to do this against the Cardinals.'

The Cubs' offense provided just enough support, with Ian Happ launching a two-run homer in the third and Seiya Suzuki adding an RBI double in the sixth. But the night belonged to Steele, who retired the final 10 batters he faced, sealing the win with a swinging strikeout of Paul Goldschmidt.

'Justin was phenomenal,' said Cubs manager Craig Counsell. 'He set the tone from the first pitch and never let up. That’s the kind of performance that lifts the whole team.'

With the win, Steele improved to 5-1 on the season with a 2.23 ERA, making an early case for All-Star consideration. The Cubs, now just a game behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central, will look to carry the momentum into their upcoming road trip.

Up Next: The Cubs head to Atlanta for a three-game series starting Tuesday, with Steele expected to take the mound again Friday in Pittsburgh.
