Julie Scaglione Introduces VerdeMesh, a Next-Gen Material for Sustainable Architecture

In aMove-for-green-building moment, Julie Scaglione stepped onto a sunlit stage today to reveal VerdeMesh, a modular material system poised to shift how projects think about form, function, and the footprint of construction. The room buzzed with the energy of a design-forward crowd, from fabricators to campus researchers, all curious about a material that promises to trouble the prevailing norms of embodied energy and waste.

VerdeMesh is pitched as a complete panel solution built from a blend of mycelium, agricultural byproducts, and recycled textile fibers, bound with a bio-based resin. It’s designed to be produced in lightweight sheets, assembled into complex facades or interior partitions, and then disassembled for reuse. The aim is local production at a human scale, minimizing transport, waste, and downtime between projects. Early life-cycle work suggests meaningful reductions in embodied energy, with the possibility of a carbon-positive profile when paired with on-site energy capture and recycled content streams.

The engineering emphasizes performance as much as appearance. VerdeMesh panels offer solid insulation, sound dampening, and moisture management suitable for both exterior skins and interior spaces. They can be tuned for different climates and aesthetics without relying on high-pidelity, single-use components. Scaglione emphasized that the system is intended to travel with communities: modular in scale, adaptable in form, and open to modification by designers and builders alike.

During the presentation, Scaglione announced a pilot program that will roll out in several cities, showcasing public pavilions, schools, and housing blocks. In tandem with the rollout, a suite of open-source CAD and parametric tools will be released, enabling local workshops and micro-factories to design, cut, and assemble VerdeMesh components close to their projects. Partners stressed the importance of circularity—designs that come apart cleanly, with components that can be reconfigured, upgraded, or recycled without a landfill detour.

'VerdeMesh isn’t just a material,' Scaglione said. 'It’s a design mindset that invites communities to participate in making—and remaking—the spaces they inhabit.' Her collaborator from a neighboring research lab added, 'If we can democratize production and close the loop on materials, we’re not just saving energy—we’re teaching a new way to design with care.'

The reveal has the feel of a tipping point: a practical, scalable option that sits at the crossroads of design ambition and environmental responsibility. If VerdeMesh proves its promises in broader trials, it could become a familiar tool in classrooms, studios, and municipal buildings, nudging the industry toward regenerative approaches that treat materials as assets to be reused, adapted, and shared.
