I seem to be one of the few who enjoyed Journey to the Center of the Earth when it was released a few years back, so I was surprised to see a sequel was planned. I guess the original made enough money. I knew immediately I'd be going to see Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. And I enjoyed it, too. In the time since his first adventures, Sean (Josh Hutcherson, the only returning cast member) has become a Jules Vern fanatic. Which is why he immediate recognizes a code he's gotten made of character names from Jules Vern books. Along with his step-father Hank (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), he deciphers it and discovers it gives clues to The Mysterious Island. Sean is convinced that it came from his grandfather. Eventually, he and Hank set out to find the island. They hire Gabato (Luis Guzman) and his daughter Kailani (Vanessa Hudgens) to fly them out there on a helicopter. Will they find Sean's grandfather (Michael Caine)? And can they get off the island again? Okay, let's be perfectly honest here. This is a kid's movie. Yes, it has action and fantasy and plenty of comedy. But kids are the target audience. Now, that's definitely not a bad thing in my book. I fully recognize this is not "great" cinema. It's designed to be a fun movie, and I enjoyed it as such. The story is not terribly original, although I got so caught up in it that I really didn't care. There is plenty of action to keep you engaged even if you know how it is going to end. And I can't forget the comedy. The packed theater I saw the movie with laughed multiple times, and it sounded to me like the adults were laughing as much as the kids. The film is filled with special effects as well, and they worked. While I knew what I was seeing couldn't be real, I believed it. While the movie was released in 3D, I didn't see it that way, so I can't comment on how that looked. And the acting worked, too. It's not outstanding, but it gets the job done without pulling you out of the film. Plus we learn that Dwayne Johnson has a pretty decent singing voice. There were some flaws to the film. There was a certain level of cheese, especially most of the times the film tried to do anything serious. And on that note, the interpersonal relationships were so predictable it was a bit annoying. Then there's Luis Guzman. I'm not sure if it was him or how his character was written, but I found him more annoying than funny. I would have preferred the movie without his character. I realize that I will be in the minority for enjoying Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, but I found it to be entertaining. And since that's all it was really aiming for, I think it succeeded.

As far at the movie itself goes, this was not a horrible film but not anything memorable either. The movie is full of middle school drama, corny jokes, and absolutely nothing compelling in the story. The cheesy plot requires a massive amount of suspended belief from the viewer. The acting is decent but nothing spectacular. I was disappointed to see the movie gives a very negative portrayal of father figures and includes a HUGE amount of disrespect from the teenager, with either no negative consequences or *positive* consequences for the bad behaviors and bad attitude. The movie makes the father figures looks like they are jokes, and there isn't really much of a redeeming character arc for the teen. In addition, the subtitles on the movie are HORRIBLE. They are so blurry, it is almost impossible to read them in any language. I was happy to see that the DVD included French language options since the movie is loosely based on a Jules Verne novel, but the subtitles were worthless because of the blurry font.

Despite this movie being a sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008) , Josh Hutcherson is the only actor to return from that movie.
(at around 58 mins) After Sean falls from the giant bee and injures his ankle against a log several individuals say he has a "dislocated ankle" and his stepfather and grandfather reset it quickly and easily as you would do with a dislocated shoulder. Although it is possible to "dislocate" your ankle it is not only very difficult to do, but due to the unique, and very stable, make-up of the ankle (unlike the shoulder) it only occurs in conjunction with either a fracture or multiple ruptured tendons of the area. Something that is very serious and extremely painful and definitely not something that could be easily remedied by 'popping it back into place' and then the individual being able to walk about and hike.
There is a brief scene of elephants swimming to the city halfway through the credits right before the cast listing.

The previews for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island made it look better than it actually was. The movie was only slightly better than I was expecting. The premise for Journey 2 was good. I enjoyed the idea, but the movie was taken to a really cheesy level. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Josh Hutcherson were truly the best part of this flick. They had good chemistry, and their characters and acting were decent. Yes, they brought some cheese, but very little in comparison to other characters. Vanessa Hudgens was OK. She really didn't bring much to the table neither through the character or her acting. Luis Guzman's character was AWFUL. He apparently was suppose to be the comic relief, but there was nothing funny about him or his jokes. His character actually brought the movie down in terms of its likability. I also found this movie to be somewhat flawed in its creation. For instance, the jelly fish should have been large, but instead were regular size. I realize this is a kids & family movie and wasn't created for extreme accuracy, or Oscar wins. I, however, still enjoy consistency in my movies. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island wasn't all that original, and EXTREMELY predictable. I pretty much knew everything that was going to happen before it happened. Some aspects of this movie felt like they were straight out of "Honey I Shrunk the Kids". All-in-all, this movie was just alright. For a kid, it might have been much more enjoyable. For an adult, it was just too flawed, corny, and cheesy to amount to much.
