Josef Newgarden Triumphs Again: Wins 2025 Indy 500 in Thrilling Finish

Speedway, Indiana – May 25, 2025 – Josef Newgarden cemented his place in Indianapolis 500 history by securing back-to-back victories in the 109th running of 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.' The Team Penske star held off a fierce challenge from Pato O’Ward and Alexander Rossi in a dramatic final lap to claim his second Borg-Warner Trophy at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

A Nail-Biting Finish

In front of a packed crowd of over 300,000 fans, Newgarden executed a daring last-lap pass on O’Ward, who had led for much of the final stint. The two drivers traded positions multiple times in the closing laps, with Newgarden ultimately pulling ahead off Turn 4 to win by just 0.341 seconds.

'I can't believe we did it again,' an emotional Newgarden said in Victory Lane. 'This race is everything. The team gave me an incredible car, and we fought till the very end. Pato was so tough—he made me earn every bit of it.'

Heartbreak for O’Ward

O’Ward, driving for Arrow McLaren, looked poised to finally capture his first Indy 500 victory after years of near-misses. Leading with two laps to go, he couldn’t hold off Newgarden’s late surge and finished second for the second time in his career.

'I gave it everything,' O’Ward said. 'Josef was just a little better today. It hurts, but we’ll come back stronger.'

Alexander Rossi (Andretti Global) rounded out the podium in third, while reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou (Chip Ganassi Racing) finished fourth after leading mid-race.

Historic Back-to-Back Wins

Newgarden became the first driver since Helio Castroneves (2001-2002) to win consecutive Indy 500s. The victory also marked Team Penske’s 20th Indy 500 win, further extending their record as the most successful team in the race’s history.

Race Marred by Cautions

The race saw several caution periods, including a multi-car incident on Lap 147 involving rookie Nolan Siegel and Marcus Ericsson. All drivers walked away unharmed, but the crash set up a 15-lap sprint to the finish, setting the stage for Newgarden’s thrilling charge.

What’s Next?

With the win, Newgarden takes an early lead in the 2025 IndyCar Series championship. The series now heads to Detroit for the next round, where Newgarden will look to carry his momentum forward.

For now, the Tennessee native will celebrate another milestone in his already illustrious career—joining the elite group of back-to-back Indy 500 champions.
