Jonathan Rhys Meyers has starred in some of our favorite shows and films, but he's been going through a rough patch.
Period pieces are Jonathan Rhys Meyers' specialty.
He's played Dracula, Henry VIII in The Tudors , and even Elvis. But his most recent period piece has been The History Channel's Vikings , where he played Bishop Heahmund.
He was introduced during season four of the show, which has a loyal fanbase and some of the most impressive sets that could rival Game of Thrones . Even though the show wasn't always accurate , Meyers' character was based on a real person. We loved his affair with Lagertha, played by Katheryn Winnick , but unfortunately, he was killed during the Battle of Marton.
But what many fans don't know is that well before he graced our screens on Vikings , Meyers' was already knees deep in his own personal battle with alcoholism. After his time on the show, the battle unfortunately continued and his career entered into a bit of a stale period. Here's the story of what happened to Meyers.
After Heahmund was killed off on Vikings , Meyers told Variety that he knew his character was never going to survive . "Heahmund is only a footnote in history [so] there was no precedent to have his character continue.
"The nature of the character and his intensity means that he is much like a Roman candle: it must shine bright, have its effect and leave.
"The death scene was filmed in the snow and bitter cold in a rather enclosed field, and of course these scenes must be very intense and quite mechanical to shoot as we are dealing with arrows, but it does have a fluidity in its manifestation of the circumstances and consequences of his death and what it means for Lagertha."
The series creator, Michael Hirst, also knew Meyers' run on the show would be short, but said that the actor was perfect for the role.
"Jonny [Rhys Meyers] was perfect for that role, absolutely perfect. Of course, I’d worked with him before [on The Tudors ] and I knew the passion and charisma that he’d bring to the role. But I also knew right from the start that it wouldn’t necessarily be a protracted role."
When his time ended, Meyers appeared in the film Awake but hasn't starred in anything else since. The reason for his absence in the industry recently is more than likely due to all the problems he's been having in his private life.
Meyers has struggled with alcoholism for more than a decade now . Starting in 2005, he was in and out of rehab and has been arrested and detained a number of times. Airports seem to be the places where he has the most trouble.
He was arrested in 2007 after he was in a drunken fight in Dublin and in 2009, he was detained for punching a Charles De Gaulle airport lounge employee. The next year he was banned for life from United Airlines after he was once again detained for being drunk.
Back in 2017, he was caught and detained by police when he showed up drunk at Dublin Airport trying to get on a flight.
The Daily Mirror reported that several witnesses saw Meyers looking completely out of it but not causing a hassle. This apparently happened after he and his wife had a miscarriage.
In March of 2018, Meyers was detained by the police after he reportedly had a drunken fight with his wife, Mara, at the Los Angeles International Airport. He was also caught vaping in the plane's toilet, which is a federal violation.
They were traveling home from getting Meyers holistic treatment for anger issues, and their one-year-old son was with them on the flight from Miami to Los Angeles.
Passengers on the plane were reportedly disgusted with Meyers' profanity and yelling during the fight. Airport police detained him when they landed, but he was eventually let go after the FBI chose not to respond to police.
Not long after the public drunkenness and fight with his wife at LAX, Meyers was arrested for driving under the influence in November 2020. Meyers was arrested after he crashed his car in Malibu.
Us Weekly reports that Meyers is now facing two criminal charges, "one count of driving under the influence of alcohol" and another, "driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent or more." He's due in court on February 25. His first appearance since his arrest happened when he was recently seen with Mel Gibson in early January.
Meyers' told Event in 2018, "I’ve been to a lot of rehab centers in my life... I went to three in one year and I talked to my therapist. I would be known as somebody who relapses with problem drinking, not alcoholism. I don’t suffer from alcoholism – I suffer from an allergy to alcohol every time I drink it. But once I stop, I never think about it again.
"That doesn’t mean that the problem is any less, it just means I have a different version of it. But when I drink, the consequences are so devastating that it is a problem. But I never need a drink. It’s not something that I crave."
Meyers continued to say that airports are a trigger for him because he has to wait for long periods of time and he's surrounded by alcohol.
On a positive note, Meyers has a boatload of projects lined up in the coming years, including American Night , Yakuza Princess, The Survivalist , Rajah , and The Cuisine War . So it seems like he's gotten his life back together in his hiatus after Vikings . He also has an incredible support system with his family and especially his wife, so he's in good hands. Maybe he prayed to the bishop.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers has had a troubled past, but thankfully, he seems to be coming out of it.
Jonathan Rhys Meyers has had a pretty rough past that affected his career for a time. He started acting in 1994 and has had some pretty major roles over the years. Rhys Meyers has starred in films like Bend It Like Beckham , Vanity Fair , Match Point , Mission: Impossible III , August Rush , and The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones . He's also appeared in many period pieces, including Elvis (where he played the King of Rock 'n' Roll himself), The Tudors (he played Henry VIII), Dracula , and History Channel's Vikings . But outside his career, Rhys Meyers has struggled with alcoholism for more than a decade.
Starting in the early 2000s, Rhys Meyers has struggled with alcoholism. In 2007, he was arrested after having a drunken brawl in Dublin, Ireland. That same year, he entered rehab. Two years later, in 2009, he was detained for punching a Charles De Gaulle Airport lounge employee. The following year he was banned for life from United Airlines after being detained again for public intoxication at New York City's John F. Kennedy Airport.
In 2017, he was once again detained by police when he showed up at Dublin Airport drunk. He was trying to get on a flight but was stopped. The Daily Mirror reported at the time that several witnesses saw Rhys Meyers acting out of it, but he was not causing a hassle talking to the police.
The following year, Rhys Meyers broke his eight months of sobriety during an altercation at Los Angeles International Airport. Rhys Meyers, his wife, Mara Lane, and their son were traveling home from getting Meyers holistic treatment for anger issues from Miami to Los Angeles. The way Rhys Meyers told the story to Larry King on Larry King Live, the family had been traveling a long time, and the airport gave away their tickets.
It was frustrating, especially with a baby, but eventually, they got on a flight. Everything should have started to get better for the family when they boarded the plane back to L.A., but Rhys Meyers chose to have a drink on the plane, making issues again. When Rhys Meyers' wife found out, they started fighting because he'd broken his sobriety. Rhys Meyers realized his mistake and took out his E-cigarette, which caused even more problems.
When the family got to L.A., police were waiting for Rhys Meyers, and they had a polite conversation. Rhys Meyers explained to King that the police were incredibly understanding and kind to him. After that incident, the actor talked to someone and worked out his issues.
"People who go through this look for things in their life that trigger them," Rhys Meyers told Event magazine. "And airports are a trigger for me, because they make you sit there for three hours, you can’t smoke and you’re surrounded by alcohol. That is not an excuse, there’s never an excuse for me to drink."
Rhys Meyers only started drinking when he was 26 years old. Despite that, he has some pretty interesting views about his past issues with alcohol.
"I actually don’t like the taste of alcohol," he told Event. "I would be known as somebody who relapses with problem drinking, not alcoholism. I don’t suffer from alcoholism – I suffer from an allergy to alcohol every time I drink it. When I drink, the consequences are so devastating that it is a problem. But I never need a drink. It’s not something I crave."
The actor's sobriety once again ended when he was arrested and charged with a DUI after he crashed his car in Malibu in November 2020. Us Weekly reported at the time that Meyers faced two criminal charges, "one count of driving under the influence of alcohol" and another for "driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 percent or more." He was due in court in February.
Opening up about her husband's past abuse, Lane wrote on her Instagram, "Depression is a real concern from past abuse as well as alcoholism which he was born with. He has been able to turn any ugliness and hurt in his life into art and is the strongest person I know. I do not know anyone who has been through what he has been through and reached his level of success. It does seem though that every time we seem to be making so much progress… sometimes it’s like two steps forward, one step back."
Despite all of Rhys Meyers' problems, he seems to have a really great support system, and it looks as if his career hasn't suffered too badly. He has several upcoming projects, including American Night , The Survivalist , The Cuisine War , Hide and Seek , Ambush , and Altitude . He just needs to avoid airports and, more obviously, alcohol, especially if he has an allergy.

Meyers recently appeared in a Brazilian action thriller film called Yakuza Princess. Set in the Japanese community within Sao Paulo, Brazil, the largest Japanese diaspora in the world, the film follows an heiress to half of the Yakuza crime syndicate. This heiress, named Akemi (played by musician MASUMI), starts a friendship with an amnesiac stranger (Meyers) who believes an ancient sword has brought their fates together. Akemi then goes to war against the syndicate’s other half as they hunt her down and attempt to kill her.
So far, the film has received mixed reviews with some praising the film’s action and use of violence/death , while others have seen it as uncool and a waste of time . But one thing that has given the movie buzz is the fact that Jonathan Rhys Meyers goes full-frontal (and backside).
This isn’t the first time that Jonathan Rhys Meyers has gone full frontal. The actor did it once before in the 2001 film Tangled . In that romantic thriller, Meyers played one-third of a violent love triangle. And his full-frontal scene there also helped to get buzz around the film. And now, two decades later, Meyers is back at it with some eye-catching nude shots.
But that’s not all! On top of that, Meyers revealed that while he was filming The Tudors, he would always film without underwear. That includes the sex scenes.
“I don’t have any lucky underpants,” he told the Evening Standard in 2014 . “I’m never wearing underpants when I do those sex scenes. I’m always half naked.”

Sorry ,there is nothing wfmrong eith nudidity on this film! Its part of the movie,Jonathan Rhys Meyers is so talent never does something to offence someone! Its a movie for God shake ,gicmve him a space!I saw 365 days and this movie is more shocking than this, its an movie ,a part of scrmene!Respect him and his family!J is proffesional and talebmnt and when he succeed we here negatives comments!Have no problem with this scene, there are others more shocking than this !
I don’t think the film relies on Jonny’s nude scenes. (Although I don’t mind them) They are part of the scene one might see in a hospital if someone were wandering out of their room. For me the acting is good from all the cast as is the storyline.
Jonathan is never short on confidence. If women can do it, men can too.
I say there are PLENTY of scenes of female nudity in film, I don’t mind a naked Jonathan Rhys Meyers!!!
Also, Velvet Goldmine and glimpses in The Governess
If you have to rely on nudity to try and get people to your movie, acting is not your line of work, maybe try fast food. Here is your first line, “would you like fries with that”? The reviews are not good.
Your an idiot. Jonathan does not need to rely on nudity to get people to see his movie. He is awesome actor. You should get your facts straight.
