Legendary founder and DJ of London’s hugely influential queer electro clash club Nag Nag Nag and original goth, known for his ‘death-hawk’ hair Johnny Slut, plays his debut set at Berlin Berlin: The Birthday this Bank Holiday Saturday August 24th.
An original member of 80’s Batcave club resident band, Specimen, Johnny also has worked with The KLF and Adamski. Here he shares his musical influences with us.
The first ever release on the electronic music label Mute Records back in 1978. I'd been into punk but this sounded so different, futuristic and exciting. An early example of 'industrial' I play it out now and it still sounds so fresh.
The track that inspired me to nick the title for the club night I ran in the early noughties. Hearing this on the late night John Peel radio show in 1979 was a bit scary but also thrilling. It sound like someone is doing the hoovering in the background! But it stayed with me as I do like extreme sounds and weirdly it is quite danceable.

I got to know the KLF crew from attending their squat parties in Stockwell around 1988. I ended up appearing in most of their videos when they went massive and also had a hand in the costume design. This to me is THE tune from the acid house era. Really fun times.
I'd heard Pete Tong play this and Fischerspooner's Emerge in 2001 and it inspired me to get my shit together to launch Nag Nag Nag. The mixture of the punk aesthetic mixed with dance music totally chimed with me. Quite goth too which always appeals.
If I had to chose one track that summed up Nag Nag Nag this would be it. He still makes amazing music and never disappoints.
