This is the repository of all the fics I’ve recced since I started reccing fics! 
Last night, while browsing lazily through Tumblr posts, I happened on a post about a new fic that seemed to be somewhat Christmas-themed and opened it in hopes it wasn’t dreadful. 
It wasn’t dreadful. It was brilliant. It is ostensibly about John and Sherlock’s respective Christmas gifts, but it’s a whole lot more than that. 
It is a long case!fic, elegantly structured, with several themes. The first is Sherlock’s sheer visceral hatred of Christmas, and the set up is hilarious. The second is the unresolved issues they have around Sherlock’s return from the dead. The third is John’s establishment of what constitutes normalcy in his life. 
The whole thing is based on The Adventure of the Devil’s Foot, for an ACD canon megabonus. 
The romantic tension in this fic is gorgeous and electric, the voices are so impecable it made me want to go rewrite everything I’ve written, the plot is masterful and there are references to Faulkner that should charm the literati among us. The angst is delicious and the resolution is sheer win. 
It made for a very nice Christmas eve, and I hope all of you Christmas celebrants have a wonderful Christmas, and you who observe other traditions have a delightfully peaceful day now that the commercial world is basically closed and the retail frenzy is on a one-day hiatus.

This WIP is so unbelievably well-created it’s like thisprettywren is the Apollo Ono of imagination. This has world-building like, woah. I find myself reading as slowly as possible to forestall arriving at the end of the chapter. Highly recommended to all who can handle the agony of following a brilliant WIP. This one’s less agonizing than most, though; she’s posting frequently. 
Gen, not slash, canon/H.P. Lovecraft/BBC crossover
Just last night I nearly posted up a cri de couer of sorrow that after 10 months of combing the fandom I believe myself to have mined all the gems and now find myself sifting the tailings, and imploring all and sundry to recommend anything of merit and literary skill of which they know, so long as it is relatively obscure enough that I might not already know of it. 
But today, I found a rec-worthy fic. I never rec anything unless it astonishes me. That’s why 10 months of fandom have resulted in less than 50 recs out of me.
It begins conventionally enough for a canon fic; there’s the meeting at St. Bart and the I-perceive-you’ve-been-to-Afghanistan bit. The first thing that stands out is the awesome formatting; it’s done up to look like it might have appeared in The Strand, patent medicine ads and all, and the Victorian voice and style is impecable. 
As the story progresses, however, it grows progressively weirder, a la Lovecraft. A Jack-the-Ripper stye murder takes an extremely reality-twisting turn, and bam, you realize this is a profoundly alternate universe. The world-building, done in the spare strokes of a Japanese watercolor, is masterful. 
On page 8, the author springs his wonderfully clever trap, and I woke my irritated boyfriend up by slapping my forehead and shouting “Holy shit!” 
Not a romance. Just a work of dazzling genius. 
There is a really well-written, if gruesome, companion piece from John’s POV in which Sherlock and John are together, written by Parrotfic, here .
Dear God. I have just read the best post-Reich I’ve read (with the exception of Gone from the Gentle Battleground, professorfangirl’s much different and epically gorgeous riff on the Epic of Gilgamesh, see my last rec list). It’s 25 chapters of awesome that somehow I didn’t know about until today. It begins in that moment of critical despair in which we so often find John in the opening scenes of post-Reich fics. But John gets hipped up to the real situation in short order, and then things get intense.
Irene is here and actually somewhat heroic and likable in her hard way, Mycroft is depicted sensitively and convincingly as a person of incredible power and deep love for his brother. There are a number of absolutely unbelievable OCs, and John is the baddest BAMF in the fandom.
The story line, the plot, is inventive, thrilling and paced expertly. It leaves one gripping the edge of the table and holding one’s breath, and when my Google Chrome booted me, I may have actually panicked and sworn furiously with the kids in the room.
The romance is beyond stunning, and the intimacy feels fresh and original. Sherlock is so marvelously rendered here that his emotional evolution seems positively inevitable. This is one of those fics that makes me despair of ever amounting to much as a writer. This is the fic I’d have written if I could. 
Go forth and read at once. And clear your schedule.  
I don’t know why I haven’t seen this on more rec lists. It’s a creative, well-written case!fic, and long enough to make a decent read, at 43,000 words. It starts out with a murder in a tube station. There is a body, and a woman with the body who has amnesia. She’s a great OFC, just as brilliant and anti-social as Sherlock. The story is a good two-for-the-price-of-one mystery, in that they not only have to figure out who the killer was, they have to figure out who Jane Doe is. The romance is slow to develop, but this is one of those instances in which that strengthens the whole piece. This is Johnlock for people who really like to read. John and Sherlock are exceptionally well-drawn. 
I followed this chapter by chapter, and now that it’s complete, I’m reccing it. Sherlock has migraines, and they are brutal. They’ve happened since he was a kid, but this is the first time John has been around for one. This is 13 chapters of agonizing pain, with John frantic to find solutions and offer what comfort he can. It’s another slow-burner, but fully NC-17 there at the end. Truth_in_lies is a good writer, a wordsmith, might be a little overwrought at times, but good use of language is a pleasure to read. Check out her other works on her livejournal page, too. 
This is a really long post-Reichenbach series that is mostly a Mystrade, but ends up Johnlock as well. The character studies in this are awesome. It starts out with a brilliant internal monologue of Mycroft’s, and really, how often do we ever hear Mycroft tell his own story? An excerpt: 
‘Everything is chess, Mycroft.’ And she was right about that. Negotiating schoolboy diplomacy at Eton was nothing but an arrangement of pawns and bishops and rooks, all with their rules of movement, but the rules were just the way you knew how to win. And global politics are nothing more than schoolboy diplomacy on a larger scale. Nothing more than the chess game in my mother’s drawing room, larger-than-life-size, and the pawns make a slightly louder sound as they land against the board.
There are other points of view represented, including an awesome Lestrade smack-down of Sally. In so much fan fiction, I have to overlook the Mycroft-as-ruler-of-the-world trope, because a claim that size really must be defended in any work of fiction, but this paints a more complete and convincing picture of the way his power works.
This is tragic in parts, and truly, screamingly funny in others, and fan fiction doesn’t work for me if John isn’t well-rendered, and
