Joel Miller, a hardened construction worker from Austin, Texas, rushed home after hearing the first news reports—something about a fungal infection spreading rapidly. By the time he reached his brother Tommy’s house, the city was already in chaos.

'Sarah!' Joel yelled, bursting through the door. His twelve-year-old daughter sat wide-eyed on the couch, the TV flashing emergency broadcasts.

'Dad, what’s happening?' she asked, her voice trembling.

Before he could answer, a neighbor staggered in, his eyes black with tendrils of infection. Joel didn’t hesitate—he grabbed Sarah and ran.

The overgrown ruins of Boston were a graveyard of the old world. Joel, now grizzled and ruthless, worked as a smuggler in the Quarantine Zone. His only rule: survive, no matter the cost.

Then Marlene, leader of the Fireflies, made him an offer he couldn’t refuse—smuggle a teenage girl, Ellie, out of the city.

'She’s immune,' Marlene said. 'She might be the key to a cure.'

Gunfire echoed through the hospital as he fought his way to her. When he found Ellie, unconscious on an operating table, he didn’t hesitate. He carried her out, leaving bodies in his wake.

On the road back to Wyoming, Ellie stirred. 'Joel… what happened?'

He took a breath. 'The Fireflies… they couldn’t make a cure. There were others like you. It didn’t work.'

Ellie searched his face. '...Okay.'

As they walked toward Tommy’s settlement, Joel knew the truth would haunt him. But he’d made his choice.
