Whittaker is about to be engulfed in a social media storm as she is revealed today by the BBC as the first ever female Doctor Who.
The thirteenth Doctor will finally break the mold and no doubt start a raging debate among fans and commentators.
It is not the first time that the British star has courted controversy.
Back in 2006 she played a brash teenager in Venus who shares a tender and complicated relationship with veteran star Peter O'Toole, who was 74 at the time.
Although Whittaker was a mature 24 at the time of filming, the subject matter made some viewers uncomfortable.
Some scenes show O'Toole reciting Shakespeare to the supposed teenager while she is in bath. He also arranges for her to nude model for a group of artists and even presses kisses along her neck in another scene.
Of course, fans would never expect to see anyting like this in Doctor Who, unlike many of teh other most popular period drama son television which are overflowing with provocative scenes.

In the nude modelling scene, O'Toole walks a very fine line between paternal concern for his young charge and a slightly awkward desire to watch her.
In the end, he is asked to leave the room, but peers in through a small window before he loses balance and falls back into the room.
O'Toole manages the almost impossible feat of keeping our sympathy with him, while Whittaker dazzles as the scared young woman trying to find herself in a strange new world.
The following year, Whittaker starred in the bawdy St Trinians reboot with Gemme Arterton, Talulah Riley and Rupert Everett.
The West Yorkshire star also had notable big screen roles in One Day with Anne Hathawy and 2011's Attack The Block.
She found even greater fame on the small screen as Beth Latimer in Broadchurch with former Doctor Who David Tennant.
The iconic character's love of "timey-whimey" whimsy will, no doubt, be tickled by Whittaker's sensational new posting in the TARDIS.

She's just been announced as the new, and first female Doctor Who - but it's not the first time Jodie Whittaker has played a character who travels through time.
The 35-year-old previously starred in a 2011 episode of popular yet chilling Netflix drama Black Mirror, as a character called Fffion.
In the episode, most people have a chip implanted in their ear which allows their memories to be played back to them, so they are essentially travelling through time.

He discovers that she has had an affair with him with causes him endless pain, so he rips the chip from his ear to end his torment for good.
Jodie said of the revelation that she is 13th Time Lord [or Lady]:
'I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey - with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It's more than an honour to play the Doctor.

Jodie was born in Skelmanthorpe, West Yorkshire and trained at the Guidhall School of Music and Drama.
She made her professional debut in the play The Storm at the Shakespeare's Globe theatre 12 years ago.

This week the Sun and Mail Online travelled in the Tardis back to 1972 to publish nude photographs of actor Jodie Whittaker in previous acting roles. This was following the announcement that Jodie will star as the new Doctor in popular BBC series Doctor Who.
Both publications ran articles about Whittaker appearing naked or topless in previous acting jobs.
Equal Representation for Actresses (ERA), a campaign group, said “We are delighted by the casting of Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor. However, we are surprised and disappointed by the Daily Mail and the Sun’s reductive and irresponsible decision to run a story featuring pictures of Jodie in various nude scenes.”
It wasn’t just the Newspaper editors that demonstrated their caveman like attitudes. The Mail Online comments section was full of praise for the exciting new casting of the science fiction role:
The print version of the newspaper went as far as questioning why male TV heroes are being zapped. This was following the news that, in a male dominated television industry, other popular male TV heroes have recently been cast as women, like… um… er… (please let us know if you can think of one other example).
Given the bar has already been set so low, our researchers have trawled through the archives to find some other raunchy topless images of Doctor Who in previous acting roles .
These pictures of the topless Doctor Who actor in previous television roles are sure to get any fan’s Sonic Screwdriver whirring.
We hate to objectify talented actors, but we thought Peter Capaldi looked Dalek-table. I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s entirely appropriate to publish half naked photos of Peter, acting in previous adult-targeted acting roles, when discussing a children’s television series.
And congratulations again to the new thirteenth Doctor!
