Jodi Ann Patterson-Curcio died from pancreatic cancer on December 15, 2021; she lived graciously and courageously until the very end.
She was born in Midland Michigan on May 2, 1968, to James and Elaine Patterson. Growing up, Jodi enjoyed living and playing on Sanford Lake, childhood friendships, large family gatherings and Christian summer camp at Lake Louise. Jodi realized at an early age that she wanted to teach and empower others. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Art Education and Political Science, and Master of Arts in Painting from Central Michigan University. After 15 years of teaching visual art and world geography in the public school system, Jodi set her sights on teaching at the University level, and she obtained her terminal degree from Goddard College. In 2000, Jodi started at Wayne State University as an adjunct professor and later served as the head of the Art Education Program at Shepherd University. Later moving to the west coast where she progressed ultimately to chair of the Art Department, as well as becoming a full professor at Eastern Washington University in 2020. As a passionate educator she continued to educate her students until her last days. Jodi loved Art in any form, paint installation, digital photography, texture etc. “Teaching is an art” she taught her students, this included how art benefits teaching, learning, and living more fully in general.
Professionally she exhibited in over 100 galleries, and museums across the U.S.A., and international venues in Budapest, London, and Paris. Jodi published several books and dozens of essays in a variety of scholarly journals and served as an inaugural co-editor of "Artizein: Arts & Teaching Journal". Jodi also served on advisory and executive boards for various art organizations. She used art to examine relationships, and in this vein, she visited, by herself and with her husband Joe, over 30 countries, photographed nearly 300 waterfalls in a two-year span, donned crampons to explore glaciers in Iceland, Canada, and the USA against the backdrop of climate change, she once traveled around the world in seven days to photograph some key UNESCO sites.
Jodi loved life and lived it to its fullest, and through her kindness and love she made the world a better place, lighting up the room with her presence while bringing joy to everyone. Always working to make a positive impact, she and her husband took on projects ranging from renovating multiple buildings, rural life improvement, and general empowerment of people.
Jodi was a keen lover of all things “Humanities”, loved flowers, walking, and off-grid camping. Jodi’s heart was giving her great-niece and nephew, Olivia and Phoenix, endless kisses, hugs, dancing and love.
