Legendary Comedian Joan Rivers Dies at 81

New York, September 4, 2014 – Joan Rivers, the trailblazing comedian, actress, and television host known for her sharp wit and unapologetic humor, has died at the age of 81. Rivers passed away on Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, a week after suffering cardiac arrest during a medical procedure.

Rivers was hospitalized on August 28 after she stopped breathing during an outpatient throat surgery at a Manhattan clinic. She was placed in a medically induced coma and later transferred to Mount Sinai, where her daughter, Melissa Rivers, confirmed her death in a heartfelt statement.

'It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother,' Melissa said. 'She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai for their amazing care and compassion.'

Joan Rivers, born Joan Alexandra Molinsky in Brooklyn in 1933, broke barriers for women in comedy with her fearless, often controversial style. She rose to fame in the 1960s with appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, becoming a household name with her biting one-liners and self-deprecating humor.

Her career spanned decades, including hosting The Joan Rivers Show, co-hosting Fashion Police, and becoming a red-carpet staple with her infamous celebrity interviews. Despite professional ups and downs, including a fallout with Carson after she launched her own late-night show, Rivers remained a beloved and influential figure in entertainment.

Tributes poured in from fellow comedians, actors, and fans, celebrating her legacy as a pioneer for women in comedy. 'No one loved comedy as much as Joan,' tweeted Kathy Griffin. 'She was a mentor and a friend, and I will miss her dearly.'

Rivers is survived by her daughter, Melissa, and her grandson, Cooper. A private funeral is expected to be held in the coming days.

Her final words on stage, just days before her hospitalization, summed up her indomitable spirit: 'I’m 81—I can’t believe it! I’m so excited to be so old! I’m still working, that’s all that matters!'
