Jimmy Smits Launches New Initiative to Support Latino Filmmakers

Los Angeles, May 7, 2025 — Award-winning actor and producer Jimmy Smits has announced the launch of Cine Latino Forward, a new nonprofit initiative aimed at providing resources, mentorship, and funding to emerging Latino filmmakers in the United States.

The NYPD Blue and Star Wars alum revealed the project during a keynote speech at the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival (LALIFF), where he emphasized the importance of diverse storytelling in Hollywood.

'For too long, our stories have been told through someone else’s lens,' Smits said. 'Cine Latino Forward is about empowering the next generation of writers, directors, and producers to bring their authentic voices to the screen.'

The initiative will offer grants, workshops, and networking opportunities, with a focus on filmmakers from underrepresented communities. Smits, who has been a longtime advocate for Latino representation in entertainment, has already secured partnerships with major studios and streaming platforms to help fund and distribute selected projects.

Industry leaders, including Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and director Robert Rodriguez, have voiced their support. 'Jimmy has always been a trailblazer,' Rodriguez said. 'This is exactly the kind of hands-on support our community needs.'

Production for the first slate of Cine Latino Forward-backed films is expected to begin in early 2026.
