Why was Jesus born in 5 BCE and crucified in 30 CE?

Bible reports:

  • that Jesus was born before Herod died (Matt 2:20)
  • that Jesus began his ministry at the age of 30 when he was baptized in the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius (Lk 3:1, 21-23)
  • that Jesus celebrated the first Passover of his ministry when the Herodian Temple was under construction for 46 years (Jhn 2:18-23)
  • that Jesus' ministry lasted 42 months (Dan 9:27; 4 Passovers: Jhn 2:13, 5:1, 6:4, 11:55)
  • that Jesus was crucified under Pontius Pilate, the governor of Judea (Matt 27:2)
  • that Jesus was crucified on Friday, Nisan 14 (Mk 15:42; Jhn 19:14)
  • that Jesus was crucified a full 40 years before the destruction of Jerusalem (Jon 3:4; Eusebius; Yoma 39b:5)

History reports:

  • that Herod died in March 4 BCE, which means that Jesus was born before March 4 BCE
  • that Tiberius' 15th year of reign was from 26/27 to 27/28 CE (his co-princeps began in 12 or 13 CE), which means that Jesus was baptized between 26 and 28 CE
  • that the Herodian Temple was under construction for 46 years in 27 or 28 CE (it began in 20 or 19 BCE), which means that Jesus was baptized between 26 and 28 CE
  • that Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea from 26 to 36 CE, which means that Jesus was crucified between 26 and 36 CE
  • that between 28 and 33 CE, Nisan 14 fell on Friday only in 30 and 33 CE, which means that Jesus was crucified in 30 or 33 CE
  • that Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 CE, which means that Jesus was crucified in 30 CE

Conclusions:

  • since Jesus was crucified a full 40 years before the destruction of Jerusalem (30 CE) on Friday, Nisan 14 (30 or 33 CE), he was crucified on Nisan 14, 30 CE
  • since Jesus was crucified on Nisan 14, 30 CE, and his ministry lasted 42 months, he was baptized in late 26 CE
  • since Jesus was baptized in late 26 CE at the age of 30, he was born in 5 BCE

Side note: Most modern scholars agree that Jesus was born between 6 and 4 BCE (Chronology of Jesus - Wikipedia) and crucified in 30 CE (Josef Blinzler's survey).

Why was Jesus born on Nisan 1?

  1. Because it is exactly the same day that God's presence filled the Tent of Meeting (Ex 40:2, 34). This event foretold the incarnation of God (Jhn 1:14, the greek word "skenoo" literally means "to tent"). On the same day that God came to earth to live in a tent, God also came to earth to live in a human body. In the New Testament we can clearly see that the old Jewish feasts are fulfilled in Jesus. Some examples: Jesus was crucified on the same day that the Passover lamb was sacrificed, because he is the true Passover lamb, the 14th of Nisan; and Jesus was resurrected on the same day that the first fruits were celebrated, because he is the first to rise from the dead to eternal life, the 16th of Nisan. So it makes sense that Jesus was born on a special Jewish day.
  2. Since Jesus is the true Passover lamb (Jhn 1:29), it makes sense that Jesus was born in the month of Nisan, a spring month, because according to the law the Passover lamb must be 1 year old (Ex 12:5). 1 year before the Passover is the month of Nisan. So Nisan is the month when the Passover lambs were born. The shepherds who watched over their flocks on the day of Jesus' birth (Lk 2:8) were probably the shepherds who prepared the Passover lambs.
  3. Nisan 1 is the beginning of the new year (Ex 12:2). Jesus was born on the New Year because he is the beginning of the new creation (2Cor 5:17).

Side note: Most likely the April Fools' Day has its origin in the birthday of Jesus, since Nisan 1 was also called April 1. The enemies of Christ have turned his birthday into a day of mockery.

Why will Jesus return on Tishrei 1?

When Jesus first came into the world, he primarily fulfilled the spring feasts. He was born, crucified, and resurrected at the spring feasts of the month of Nisan. However, at his first coming, he did not fulfill the autumn feasts, which take place in the month of Tishrei. Jesus will return on Tishrei 1 because Tishrei 1 is the Feast of Trumpets (Lev 23:24), and according to the Bible, Jesus will return when the trumpets are blown (1Thess 4:16).

Why will Jesus return in 2030 CE?

Early Christians from the first and second century (like chapter 15 of the Barnabas Epistle) believed that the world exists for only 7 days, with each day representing 1000 years. It is called the "Millennial Day Theory." The first 4 days were between Adam's fall and Jesus' ascension, the next 2 days are between Jesus' ascension and Jesus' return, the last 7th day is the Millennial Kingdom, and after the 7th day the whole world will be destroyed and a new eternal world will be created. Jesus died in 30 CE according to most scholars. 40 days after his resurrection, he left the world and returned to his Father. This means that Jesus will return in 2030 CE.

Didn't Jesus say no one knows the hour?

It is not what it seems. For example, Revelation 19:12 says that Jesus has a name that no one knows except him. Does this mean now that the almighty Father does not know the name? Because it literally says that "no one except Jesus" knows the name. Any reasonable person would say that the almighty Father knows the name anyway. How, then, are we to understand Jesus’ words that no one except the Father knows the hour? The answer is that "not knowing" actually means "not revealing." When Jesus said that only the Father knows the hour, he actually meant that only the Father will reveal it. So at the time Jesus said this, it was not yet ready to be revealed. Later, it was apparently revealed to the disciples, because the apostle Peter indicates in 2 Peter 3:8-9 that the return of Jesus would take at least a thousand years, so he must have known when Jesus would return.
