I'm a 28 year old guy and I had to stay in hospital for a week. I feared getting erections in front of the nurses all the time but to be honest, that couldn't have been further away from my thoughts. I was not in the mood and the hospital environment is far from sexy.
However, the day would inevitably arrive. I started to get raging erections all the time for no reason and my testicles actually hurt. Since I had to stay still for the time I was there, I couldn't even do it in the bathroom.
I was in a private room so I took my chances during a quieter time of the day. I cannot masturbate under sheets or clothes, so I had to lift those. Just I had finished ejaculating, the nurse suddenly comes in. I quickly covered myself up but she surely must have seen what was going on.
Because I had all the mess down there and all over my hand, I was afraid she would come have a look at me. So I asked her if she could come back in a minute. She acted like she didn't understand what was going on and came back later, giving me time to clean myself.
Hope this doesn't offend anyone but it was extremely embarrassing to me. Nurses, is this commonplace? I don't mean from those patients with dementia or who have somehow lost inhibitions, just from "normal" patients.
This is very common lol you handled it well.
It depends on the nurse, to be honest, and how often they have to deal with the situation. I think it’s more the shock of unexpectedly walking in on someone that gets people. Personally, I don’t care.
Funny story, we have cameras in my unit, they don’t have sound and can’t record, they are just there to make sure no one falls out of bed. Each patient is notified about them when they arrive, but apparently one guy didn’t care and started going for it one night. We had a few people who thought it was funny, but his nurse and I just told the camera person to turn the camera away from “the main event” and we’d let her know when to turn it back based on his heart rate. Heck, the guy’s blood pressure was a whole lot better after he was done, so as far as I’m concerned, he saved us a bit of work and probably felt better afterwards. Win-win.
Only bugs me when patients continue to masturbate when I am talking to them.
I walked In on a lady going down on her man. It happens.
Doesn't bother me at all. I've walked in on it a couple of times, usually with dudes about your age. I just say "oh! Sorry to barge in. I'll come back in 20 minutes" and then leave. I'm usually so busy I forget about it by the end of the day! Don't stress.
It happens. I’d just give them some privacy and return at a later time.
It happens! You're not deliberately doing it in front of staff or anything. We only mind if you do it on purpose to harass us. When you're alone is fine we'll just come back later.
I don't why some nurses are so flustered when this happens. It's a natural part of life yo. You did what you could to maintain some privacy. So whack away I guess. Hahahaha.
I would laugh my ass off and we would never talk about it.... NOWWW, if you were jerking off in the hallway making a big thing of it, I would have to document it in your chart and probably call security if you didn't stop.
Don't fret about it :) We see all kinds of stuff and honestly, masturbation is probably some of the tamer things.
Happens. I had one patient where after the third time, I would carry a towel into the room to just toss it over his groin and carry on with my task (and him with his - he didn't stop just because I was there, you know).
Happens all the time. If she realized it she may have had a quiet chuckle. Don’t worry about it.
Why not? If there is no actual reason someone shouldn’t be masturbating (I mean, if someone has a roommate, or keeps going into SVT or a-fib, they probably shouldn’t be), who cares? They will feel better, be less snarky to staff, be less stressed. If they feel good enough to do that I know they probably aren’t dying. Some of these people are relatively healthy adults stuck in the hospital for some time.
I mean, someone inappropriate about it is going to have boundaries set, but some embarrassed guy that thought he would have enough time alone to quickly and stealthily rub one out? Nope. “Call me when you’re ready to have your medications,” and I’m out with the door closed behind me.
Why? If he is in a private room and not disturbing or harassing anyone, who cares? Just turn around, shut your mouth and come back later.
Why not? I mean as long as they aren't trying to blatantly expose themselves and they are in a private room, there's no issue.

My LO is 6 weeks old. For the past ~3 weeks he constantly yanks at my breasts while nursing. He writhes around, forcefully pulls at them unlatching, makes noises, etc. Nursing is no longer a quiet, relaxing experience. It is very frustrating.
Breastfeeding is going great for us. He regained his birthweight within just a few days. I saw an LC on day 5, and she thought our latch was great, and he had a very good transfer during the feed she supervised. However at 3 weeks things really changed.
I thought it was a growth spurt at first so I was switching his back and forth until he was satisfied at a feeding. But now I'm starting to think it's actually an oversupply issue or maybe an overactive letdown. I have tried expressing into a cloth after he first latches, but my milk sprays really at any time during the feeding. He is constantly upset and unlatching during the feeding which seems to cause him to take in extra air. I've tried burping him but he doesn't burp easily.
This happens on both sides. I looked into block feeding but not sure what that would accomplish. I tried it for a day, but the breast that missed a feeding was overly engorged and the spray was even worse. I'm not pumping right now to cause oversupply or anything. This makes NIP really hard for me. And I would like nursing to get back to a relaxing experience.
My son was born weighing 8-10. He was 9 pounds on day 8. He is 6 weeks now and weighs 13 pounds.
His poopy diapers are a consistent yellow color. He is a great baby. Naps and sleeps well and is cheerful.
I felt like we were in a growth spurt from 3 weeks until around 7 weeks. After week 6 or 7 things really started to calm down. I think if you stick it out it will be better soon, so hang in there! As long as he has good diapers he is getting enough.
Also, for block feeding to change anything you have to do it for at least a few days to a week, so your supply can adjust. However if you're not having other fore milk or oversupply issues I would not block feed.
Thanks for replying. He has sooo many wet diapers. What would be indicators of an over supply issue? My understanding of a foremilk issue is that an indicator is green, frothy poops and slow weight gain. He doesn't have either of those. He jerks and tugs way more on my right side which makes me think it's not necessarily a growth spurt but rather an over active let down or something. Also I think when he gets full, he just wants to comfort nurse for a bit before pulling off. And there is still milk coming out and he gets frustrated. I'm not in such a place that I'm considering stopping or anything. Everything else is really great.
My son just started doing this within the last week also, seems to be worse at night! I chalked it up to his growth spurt (he will be 4 weeks Tuesday) I hope that it goes back to normal soon because it can be painful when he pulls back with the nipple in his mouth! He also latches and unlathes and gets upset but only at night time! It's frustrating! Here's to hoping its a phase!
You may just have fast flow. My daughter adjusted to it, but she will still unlatch during my letdown and I just let it spray into a cloth, then she relatches. Just push through, sounds like you're doing great!
When I had an oversupply it was from pumping too much. My baby was like 10 weeks when it turned into a fore milk issue. Anyway, I was super, painfully engorged and I could pump like 10 extra ounces every day while at work.
I found nursing reclined helps at the beginning of the session to slow the flow. Also noticed some sessions are more relaxed for baby than others.
My daughter is 6 wks and starting to do the same things. We had zero issues before and now it's a struggle. I don't have any info for you other than to let you know you're not alone.
I had this problem beginning around 5 weeks and still slightly. However I found the problem to be that he needed to burp out an air bubble. He will then continue to feed for a short period and then do it again, with less forceful tugs. That is his sign he is done.

I understand that when people can’t (for whatever reason) take care of themselves, their caretakers have to feed them, bathe them, change them, wipe their butts, etc. In the case of professional caretakers, are they either legally obliged or prevented from taking care of their clients’ sexual needs?
I’m going to guess not, but does that mean that clients who aren’t otherwise intimate with someone would go years… or perhaps the rest of their lives… without any sexual release?
Get to. Not have to. Think positive.
What a gr8 question! Sexual activity has proven cardiovascular benefit, as well as a general good feeling, endorphin release, and just plain feels good. Of course it’s more fun with a partner (in my personal experience), but I’ve never ‘serviced’ a disabled woman (closest I came was one with a bad back & another with a sprained ankle ). I guess they have limited choice for partners but I’m sure there must be some kind of specialized healthcare worker out there who can provide release. Especially in men, there is real danger in lack of release: Cecil covered this syndrome of ‘priests disease’ here:
Dear Cecil:
After recently engaging in some high school-style sex (prolonged stimulation without orgasm), I experienced the painful phenomenon of, you should pardon the expression, "blue balls."...
Basically, backed-up semen can infect the prostate causing prostatitis. it’s accepted that men who regularly ‘clean the pipes’ suffer lower incidences of prostate issues. Dunno the data on women, but in general, having sexual release is healthier than not having it.
Sorry I can’t provide a definite answer. Based on other life experiences, my instinct tells me that if some1 can think of the question, there are people out there to provide a service (even legally). Every once in a while, some1 asks a question that makes me stop on a dime, & ponder. Damn good question.
Every time I’ve been in a hospital and under a nurse’s care (I’m not disabled or paralyzed), I’ve had a catheter jammed up into my penis, so I never got to pursue the whole “sexy nurse” fantasy. (Korea has very beautiful nurses, BTW, and very gnarly catheters.)
Sexual activity has proven cardiovascular benefit…
Isn’t this related to all the moving around that’s a typical part of sex between able-bodied people, as opposed to the relatively minor increase in blood flow related to arousal? if that’s the case, would there be any significant CV benefit for sexual activity in a person who has limited or zero movement?
I’m pretty sure I could lose my license for that.
But I do wonder if they ever need to assist for sperm collection or testing of seminal fluid or something. My guess is a gloved finger up the rectum to stimulate the prostate would be the more professional technique, not an actual hand job.
There are sex therapists, and some of them do engage in sexual activity with their clients, or they employ sex surrogates, but I’m not sure how legitimately they’re viewed by, say, a nursing home or rehab center. I’m almost certain Medicare won’t pay for it, even if you had a referral.
I also don’t know how they stay on the legal side of prostitution laws.
More on sex therapists from a really weird message board: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=440807
I would think that a guy would have enough wet dreams to keep the pipes clean.
I’ve seen a video (on youtube!) of a nurse mastrubating a disabled person, but I’m sure not going to search for it right now.
I would think that a guy would have enough wet dreams to keep the pipes clean.
Nope. Last time I had one of those was years ago.
It’s not masturbation if someone else does it to or “for” you.
I’m pretty sure it would be a crime everywhere in the US except certain place in Nevada.
Nope. Last time I had one of those was years ago.
But you probably are sexually active or you do masturbate (does masturbation counts as sexually active? I guess not, but it probably might depend on context…).
This is one of the biggest reasons I think prostitution should be legal (and safe and all that). Not that I’m saying every paralyzed person will be ordering hookers by the truckload, but why shouldn’t they be able to if they want to?

Sometimes I’m happy to see that someone is in the same handbasket as me.

Are wet dreams something that only happen if a man is not sexually active (and here I mean “sexually active” in that the hardware gets a workout once in a while, with or without the help of another person)?

Would it be legal if they got unpaid volunteers to do it?

Yes, it would appear that sometimes pickers can be spoojers.

I guess it’s not proven but I would think that frequent ejaculation through stimulation would reduce occurrences of nocturnal emissions.
We’d just be encouraging lazy people to become paralyzed.
Caregivers have gone to jail for such things. In a nursing home it would be considered abuse.
