It may only be September, but at the Toronto Film Festival , Jennifer Lopez just claimed the sexiest movie scene of the year.
For the first 10 minutes of Lorene Scafaria ’s Hustlers , audiences follow Constance Wu ’s character, Destiny, as she struggles to make money dancing at a New York strip club. And then, as the opening piano chords of Fiona Apple ’s “Criminal” crash onscreen, Lopez’s Ramona struts onstage, drops her full-length fur, and shows Destiny how it’s done.
In towering stilettos and a rhinestone G-string bodysuit so small that costume designer Mitchell Travers could stuff it in his pocket walking to set, Ramona crawls across the stage in a sequence choreographed by Johanna Sapakie, contorting her body around the pole and flipping herself into a gravity-defying inversion. She is hypnotic; the men watching respond by hurling dollar bills onstage.
But in Scafaria’s care, the scene is more than Jennifer Lopez just oozing sex: it’s a damning encapsulation of American values.
“When women are valued for their beauty or their bodies, whether that’s for sex or motherhood, and men are valued for their money and success and power…the trickle-down of both of those things is really dangerous,” the filmmaker told Vanity Fair in Toronto Friday. In her film, inspired by Jessica Pressler ’s New York magazine feature, Ramona hatches a scheme to further capitalize on her sex appeal by flirting with men, slipping drugs into their drinks, and—when they’re just conscious enough to fork over their wallet and PIN numbers—maxing out their credit lines. In Hustlers, Ramona and Destiny aren’t exactly villains as much as single mothers struggling to succeed on an uneven playing field.
“I don’t fault anyone for working in that broken system,” said Scafaria. “I certainly don’t judge women for wanting to be beautiful or men for wanting to be successful. I just think, Well, what standards are those? It’s such a broken system for all of us [that] I can’t help but have empathy for the men too. I don’t want to judge any gender or job in any way.… I would just like to see that really broken value system change, obviously. Not the club system, per se; I don’t judge the women in there, or the men who walk in. But I judge the culture that allows this to be it for us. That reinforces that men are worth that, and women are worth that.”
The film is set in 2007—but, troublingly, Scafaria still sees the same issues plaguing American culture. “The world keeps turning,” said the filmmaker. “We’re still somehow up against it…it still feels like I’m fighting for things my mom is fighting for. And that’s strange.”
Even though Scafaria wrote the script for Hustlers, and had directed two prior features—2012’s Seeking a Friend for the End of the World and 20`15’s The Meddler —she was not the first choice to direct the film itself. Martin Scorsese was sent her script, as was “everyone” else in Hollywood’s director pool, Scafaria joked. But she felt so strongly about the story that she told her agent, “I need to adapt this, even if it is just on paper.”
She held out hope, taking other writing jobs to pay her bills but refusing to sign on to another directorial project in case she would be permitted to carry Hustlers across the finish line. After creating mood boards and putting together a two-minute sizzle reel, Scafaria eventually convinced producers to give her the greenlight to direct. (In the film, Destiny has a recurring nightmare that she is in the back seat of a car she is not driving. Scafaria has also suffered from nightmares about not being in control—but, she told Vanity Fair, she “hasn’t had one in a while.”)
Production momentum picked up when Lopez agreed to play Ramona, a role that Scafaria said fits the performer “like a glove.” Lopez visited strip clubs for research and worked with Sapakie for two and a half months to master the complicated, core-intensive “Criminal” choreography, even installing stripper poles in her homes. When Scafaria finally saw the dance sequence, only about two weeks before filming, “my head exploded, obviously,” laughed the director. The filmmaker said that she and her Hustlers cinematographer Todd Banhazl immediately knew they had to up their game.
“Todd and I were like, Okay, we have to bring this—we have to treat this like a stunt…like a sports movie, and show the strength and athleticism involved in that routine. We had as many cameras going as we could at once. We wanted to keep the perspective in Destiny’s perspective. We are with Ramona onstage, but we are also being hustled by her. The camera in that scene—I think Ramona’s telling me where it goes.”
Scafaria found inspiration for Lopez’s striptease scene in an unlikely place: Scorsese’s movies. Specifically, she looked to the entrances of two criminal characters who immediately captivate audiences: Sharon Stone ’s Ginger in Casino, and Robert De Niro ’s Jimmy Conway in Goodfellas. Scafaria and her D.P. also looked to another Scorsese classic: Raging Bull.
“We loved the idea that Ramona is a fighter entering the ring. So that first shot of her was kind of inspired by that.… We didn’t watch any stripper movies,” Scafaria said of her preparation for the film. “We watched sports movies, friendship movies—like Clueless, A League of Their Own. Gangster films…movies about individuals’ relationships with their bodies and being a physical force—like Creed, Raging Bull, Flash Dance, Dirty Dancing, We were trying to get into these women’s heads and tell the story from their perspective as much as possible. I think there are obviously sexier moments, but I still feel the characters are responsible for those moments. They’re in control.”
Even though the film centers on strippers—criminal strippers at that—Scafaria sees Hustlers as a universal story.
“What’s not relatable about this?” she said of her characters’ titular hustles. “I’ve danced for the money. I danced for the money to get the movie made.”
