Before Jennifer Lopez became J.Lo, she considered stripping as a way to make ends meet at the beginning of her career.

In a new interview with W Magazine , the 50-year-old got candid about her life before she was famous and the very different path she almost took when she was a young struggling dancer. “There was a moment in my life when my friends, who were also dancers, told me about making thousands of dollars at clubs in New Jersey. They said, ‘You won’t need to be topless,’” Lopez explained. “It sounded awfully good when I was broke and eating pizza every day, but I never did it."

Considering her recent, award-nominated performance in the movie Hustlers as stripper Ramona Vega, Lopez's career appears to have come full circle. However, she did have her hesitations about playing the character.

"I was a little nervous about doing this movie because I had never played someone this dark or complicated," she admits. "I liked that Ramona, the character I play, and the other strippers were looked at as equals to their patrons, the guys on Wall Street. Ramona reminded me of that girlfriend we all have who is exciting but can also get you into trouble. You always miss that friend when she’s gone, but when you get together, you worry you might find yourself in some crazy situation. That’s Ramona."

In the end, she agreed to take on the role for free, because of how much she believed in the movie's success. "I do things because I love them. I didn’t get paid a whole bunch of money for Hustlers . I did it for free and produced it," she told GQ back in November. "I bank on myself. That’s the Jenny From the Block. I do what I want, I do what I love."

To the academy: please hand this woman an Oscar.

Constance Wu wants top pay over the star studded cast of 'Hustlers.'
Jennifer Lopez was horrified to watch herself play a stripper in " Hustlers " — for more reasons than one.
"When I watched the movie for the first time, I was like, a little bit sick to my stomach," she told Entertainment Tonight . "I was like, 'Oh my God! What are they doing? They are going to kill this guy!'" she shared about one scene in which she and her fellow strippers "hustle" a rich man. "They were playing with fire."
Lopez explained, "I'm a by-the-book kind of person. Like, I'm always afraid. I don't want to jaywalk or anything. They're going to get me!"
The 50-year-old superstar, who plays Ramona, the leader of a group of strippers in a Robin Hood-esque scheme to steal from wealthy men, also admitted that the actual stripping down gave her pause.
"It's not like me being onstage with a bunch of tights and fishnets on and bodysuits," she said. "Those are sexy costumes. This is another level. You're out there naked!"
In one scene, Lopez dances in a G-string to establish her character's reputation as the Big Apple's most cunning stripper. That doesn't mean she actually felt that way at first, though.
“I was terrified,” the "Dance Again" singer confessed to Variety . “I felt exposed. I was like, ‘I’ve never done anything like this. I’m going to be up there in f---ing dental floss. What is this? Who is this person?’ "

However, once she actually got to work, she felt much better.
"Then you get up there, and you have to have a ‘f--- you,’ empowered attitude," she said. "You have to take your power back. You have to be so bold.
"It’s almost like when you say you’re a rock star, you have to be arrogant to go up there in front of all those people or you crumble," she added. "You realize it’s the same type of balls that it takes to do something like that. And these women have that. They are tough, hard, vulnerable and damaged. It’s a great character to play.”

Jennifer Lopez is earning rave reviews for her performance in Hustlers — but the real-life story behind the acclaimed movie about strippers getting back at their Wall Street clients isn’t so bright.

The movie, inspired by Jessica Pressler’s 2015 New York Magazine article “ The Hustlers at Scores ,” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday and is now playing in theaters.

The film also stars Constance Wu, Cardi B , Lizzo, Keke Palmer, Lili Reinhart and Julia Stiles. Lopez, 50, shines as Ramona, the owner of a successful strip club who cooks up a way of getting even richer.

Here’s everything to know about Hustlers .

The story follows Wu’s Destiny, who finds herself down on her luck and in need of money so she can care for herself and her aging grandparents.

Destiny inevitably meets Ramona, who teaches Destiny the ropes of stripping and dancing on a pole while also aiming to get the upper hand on her Wall Street clients with the help of her crew.

Stiles, 38, plays a character inspired by Pressler, the journalist who wrote about the real-life strippers that inspired the film, while Lizzo, Cardi B , Palmer, and Reinhart form the crew that helps Ramona in her scheme.

Roselyn “Rosie” Keo and Samantha Barbash were the focus of Pressler’s article. Lorene Scafaria, the director of the film, changed their names in the film to Destiny (Rosie’s counterpart) and Ramona (Samantha’s counterpart).

Rosie and Samantha met at Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club in New York City in 2007. Rosie, who was studying at Berkeley College in New Jersey at the time, took a break from stripping when she became pregnant with her daughter, but later returned when she needed a way to make ends meet.

When the 2008 recession hit, Rosie found the strip club industry had changed drastically with strippers offering sexual services for money instead of just dancing on the pole.

Despite the downturn in money a the clubs, Rosie observed that Samantha had not only stopped stripping but also found a way to continue making money at the strip club.

Samantha’s plan? Fishing for wealthy clients from her lengthy Rolodex and inviting them to the strip club with the promise of good looking girls.

“They’d wine and dine him, then the others would show up, and then, when he was drunk on alcohol and feminine attention, they’d steer him toward one of the clubs from which they had negotiated a lucrative percentage of his spending,” Pressler wrote. “Then they would proceed to run up his credit card as far as they could push it.”

Rosie told Pressler they would occasionally “sprinkle” MDMA and ketamine in a client’s drink if he didn’t seem up to the task of going to a strip club.

“It sounds so bad to say that we were, like, drugging people,” Rosie said at the time. “But it was, like, normal. What’s an extra $20,000 to them?”

She continued, “It wasn’t like we pulled them off the street. They had history. They’d been to Hustler, they’d been to Rick’s, they’d been to Scores. They all walked in ready to party. And yeah, we slipped an extra one that they didn’t know about. But all of it goes hand in hand — sex, drugs, and rock and roll. You know?”

Their scheme came tumbling down when they, along with exotic dancers Karina Pascucci and Marsi Rosen and RoadHouse manager Carmine Vitolo, were indicted.

Samantha and Rosie were charged with two counts of conspiracy, four counts of grand larceny, two counts of assault and three counts of forgery, according to TIME . Both were sentenced to five years probation.

Karina was charged with two counts of conspiracy, four counts and grand larceny and one count of forgery while Marsi was charged with two counts of conspiracy, three counts of grand larceny, one count of assault and two of forgery, the magazine reported. They were sentenced to four months of weekends in jail and five years of probation.

Since then, the women have moved on. Rosie has written a book on the experienced called The Sophisticated Hustler and joined the cast of the film at TIFF, where she posed for photographs.

Samantha, like Rosie, has also written a book called Underscore which is set to hit shelves later this month. Samantha also owns a spa.

It’s safe to say that mastering the art of pole dancing for her role in Hustlers was one of the more challenging skills Jennifer Lopez has tackled for a movie.

“Training for pole dancing was painful and really, really difficult,” Lopez tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover, where she and three other stars are celebrated as PEOPLE’s People of the Year.

“I’ve learned a lot of different things for movies, (from) martial arts to shooting, but this was something totally different… I was bruised everywhere, chafed, burned – people don’t realize you can’t have body makeup or tights on because you have to slide and it has to be skin to pole.”

Not only did Lopez’s pole dancing skills make for a jaw-dropping onscreen introduction to her Hustlers character, Ramona, but her overall performance in the hit film has landed the star on critics’ shortlists this awards season.

“Honestly, I was in tears,” says Lopez, 50, of all the accolades and Oscar buzz. “You are so honored to be in the conversation… It all felt awesome and overwhelming.”

The critical acclaim — and mad pole-dancing skills — has been an added bonus from making Hustlers , which Lopez co-produced, but playing Ramona had its own enduring effect on the actress.

“I also learned from playing that character — she was so independent, there was no man in her life and she was always telling Destiny [played by Constance Wu], ‘We don’t need anybody, we can do this on our own!'” she says.

“It’s that theme of being limitless, this whole idea that you can do it on your own… There was a toughness to her that reminded me to be that way in my own life.”

While she is happily engaged to former Yankees star Alex Rodriguez , 44, Lopez says she has never felt more personally empowered. “I’ve come to a place where I feel the most comfortable and most powerful I’ve ever felt,” she says.

“I feel more confident and at peace with who I am and more aware of what I bring to the table, but that was a huge journey.”
