Jennifer Lawrence skinned a squirrel for Winter’s Bone and did high kicks wearing blue body paint for X-Men: Days of Future Past. But none of that prepared Hollywood’s top actress for the pressure of her first big sex scene. In The Hollywood Reporter ’s annual Actress Roundtable, Lawrence opened up about shooting a love scene with costar Chris Pratt for Passengers, Sony’s upcoming sci-fi drama.
“I had my first real sex scene a couple weeks ago [while shooting Passengers ], and it was really bizarre,” she said. “Nobody did anything wrong. It’s just a bizarre experience.” So anxious did the 25-year-old actress feel about filming an erotic scene with Pratt, who is married to actress Anna Faris, that she needed some liquid courage.
“I got really, really drunk. But then that led to more anxiety when I got home because I was like, ‘What have I done? I don’t know,’” Lawrence told THR.
“And he was married. And it was going to be my first time kissing a married man, and guilt is the worst feeling in your stomach,” she continued. “And I knew it was my job, but I couldn’t tell my stomach that. So I called my mom, and I was like, ‘Will you just tell me it’s OK?’”
Despite brief, steamy scenes in movies like Like Crazy (with Anton Yelchin) and Serena (with Bradley Cooper), Lawrence’s movie career has been surprisingly chaste so far. Her Hunger Games character Katniss, for example, has exchanged only a few pecks with love-triangle participants Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and Gale (Liam Hemsworth). Filming with Pratt, then, was a whole new experience — and one that made Lawrence feel “very vulnerable.”
“You don’t know what’s too much,” she said. “You want to do it real, you want everything to be real, but then … That was the most vulnerable I’ve ever been.”
Lawrence, who stars in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 (opening Friday), also told MTV that kissing Pratt felt very different from kissing co-stars Hutcherson and Hemsworth, mainly because she didn’t know him very well beforehand. “I don’t know him as well as I know Josh and Liam. It doesn’t feel as much like making out with a family member,” she said, adding jokingly, “Not that I’m against that — I’m from Kentucky.”
Passengers, directed by Morten Tyldum ( The Imitation Game ), is set on a spaceship in the future where thousands of passengers have been put into cryogenic sleep as they journey to another planet. When one of the ship’s occupants (Pratt) awakens 90 years early, he decides to rouse a female passenger (Lawrence) to keep him company. The film is scheduled for release in December 2016 and made news earlier this year when Lawrence and her reps negotiated a reported $20 million payday for the project.

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt had some pretty shocking things to say about their Passengers sex scene during a recent promotional appearance.
The co-stars participated in BBC Radio 1's "Playground Insults" segment on Monday, and they proved to be pros at roasting one another. Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt started the competition by trying to stare each other down, but all that intense eye action didn't intimidate Lawrence — it just made her crack up so much that she had a difficult time holding back the giggles while she lobbed her first insult at Pratt.
As Entertainment Tonight reports, Jennifer Lawrence attempted to emasculate her adversary by telling Chris Pratt that his petite wife, Anna Faris, is tougher than he is.
"You are so falsely strong that if I was given a choice of you or your wife to protect me, I would choose Anna," Jennifer said.
She also used Chris and Anna's son, Jack, to insult Chris' intelligence.
"You are so stupid that your 3-year-old son has probably taught you everything you know," she said.
"How does it feel being in the stupidest Marvel movie," Pratt fired back, referencing Lawrence's work in the one of the three X-Men movies that she has starred in.
Other insults included digs at Adele's singing and Pratt's lack of an Oscar, and Jennifer Lawrence came shockingly close to oversharing about how she grooms her most intimate area. However, 26-year-old Jennifer decided to crack a joke about her 37-year-old co-star's age instead of comparing his beard to her ladybits. After Chris made a quip about how much fake hair Jennifer wears, she brought up their Passengers sex scene.
"Before our sex scene, I took two Pepto Bismol," Jennifer Lawrence said, suggesting that the thought of having to fake love-making with Chris Pratt gave her heartburn, indigestion, nausea, upset stomach, or diarrhea.
Pratt fired back with the barb that ended the competition.

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt were obviously just joking around, but Lawrence has actually admitted that she had to swallow something to help her make it through her Passengers sex scene with Pratt. However, it wasn't Pepto Bismol — the actress needed something much stronger to survive the awkward shooting of her very first sex scene .
"I got really, really drunk," Lawrence told the Hollywood Reporter .
During an interview with Vanity Fair , Chris Pratt said that he joined Jennifer in boozing it up before the filming of their intimate onscreen moment, and he revealed what their drink of choice was.
"She wanted to have some wine, so we did, and that was nice," Pratt said.

Jennifer Lawrence has kissed a few other men onscreen, including her Hunger Games co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. However, as People reports, Lawrence didn't get nearly as anxious about pretending to swap spit with the unmarried actors.
"I was like, 'Who cares?' and I'd eat mustard and tuna," Lawrence told talk show host Graham Norton.
Liam Hemsworth confirmed that his co-star made kissing scenes "uncomfortable" by "eating garlic or tuna fish or something that was disgusting" and not brushing her teeth before she locked lips with him.
Jennifer Lawrence revealed that she didn't make Chris Pratt taste her fish breath during their kissing scene in Passengers — she was more respectful of Pratt's nose and decided to snack on mints before pretending to make out with him.
Passengers is a sci-fi movie about two hibernating spaceship passengers who wake up way too early during a 120-year flight from Earth to another planet. They end up falling for each other while the ship seemingly starts falling apart around them.

Out in theaters this week is a guaranteed Christmas blockbuster hit titled Passengers , featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. The sci-fi story starts aboard a huge spaceship in which all crew members and passengers are hibernating in a deep, life-pausing sleep not to be awoken for 120 years when they reach a planet called Homestead II . Along the way, Jim (Pratt) and Aurora (Lawrence) find themselves awake early and looking at an 89-year journey on the spaceship, never to arrive at their destination. It’s the stuff of nightmares (and intriguing film premises).
The film is well-acted and dives into the ethical dilemmas that fantasy thrillers so often can; Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor’s 2005 flick The Island comes to mind as another thought-provoking joy ride. But Passengers unfortunately falls victim to the pressures that so many movies suffer from today—to force-feed unnecessary sexualized scenes into an otherwise thoughtful story line.
At one point in the film when Lawrence is trying with all her might to open a device, she flails to the point that her chest is busting out of her shirt. When she gets hit by a flying projectile, she rips off her shirt to bandage the wound. When she goes on her daily swim, her suit just happens to be something that would fit seamlessly into a Victoria’s Secret catalog. And when Jim and Aurora develop a romance, we have to see one, two, three, four scenes where they are depicted having sex.
The shameless sex appeal insertions may not kill the story, but they do bring me pause. Especially because Lawrence has said in interviews how uncomfortable she felt in the filming of the scenes.
Earlier this year, on a roundtable with the Hollywood Reporter , Lawrence was asked what her toughest moment as an actress was thus far. She immediately said that she had recently acted in her “first real sex scene,” which was for Passengers , and she called it “a bizarre experience.” Despite saying that everything “was done right” (meaning her colleagues were professional), she said she was so uncomfortable that she had to prepare for the scene by drinking. “You drink. You get really, really drunk,” she said. But that drinking, Lawrence said, only “led to more anxiety.”
