Jennifer Lawrence's new spy thriller Red Sparrow is a violent, ambiguous, stylish film — and director Francis Lawrence wanted it to be even more violent.
The movie is adapted from Jason Matthews' novel of the same name and follows Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence), a former prima ballerina who is enlisted against her will as a "sparrow" — a trained seductress who is taught to use her body as a weapon by the Russian secret service.
We already knew that the film had to be re-edited to avoid getting an R rating , and that the cut scene was a particularly gruesome one, but now Francis Lawrence has told Digital Spy exactly what was removed to get the lower rating.
So, before we go on, here's your spoiler/description of violent scenes ahead warning . Don't read below the picture if you're squeamish (or drinking).
"It's the only edit I made for any territory," Francis told us. "They said, 'Hey, if you just lose a little bit in this one scene, you can get this rating, which will help financially'.
"It's the first scene in the hotel where she goes to visit Ustinov (Kristof Konrad) and she's up there, and he gets garrotted and the garrotte starts to cut into his neck and it starts to drip quite a lot of blood and it starts to drip down onto her chest and neck, and we trimmed that down by just a couple of shots and shortened it, and that's it."
To save you a Google search, "garrotting" means killing someone by strangling them with a length of wire or cord, or something similar.
According to the British Board of Film Classification , the scene demonstrated "strong sadistic violence" and was re-edited to avoid the 18 rating.
Fortunately, Francis added that he was completely fine with cutting bits of the film here and there, so long as it didn't impact the feel of the movie overall.
"That didn't bother me at all," the director continued. "If suddenly, to get this one jump in rating I was having to cut a lot of things, if it started to feel like it was really going to augment the tone of the movie and the feel of the movie and the dynamics of the movie, I wouldn't have done it.
"But to really pinpoint a couple of shots and say shorten a few of these things, I was 100% fine with that."
Previously, Francis told Digital Spy how he felt "honestly panicked" at the thought of giving J-Law overtly sexual and nude scenes in the film.
"Years earlier she said to me that she didn't have any interest in doing nudity or overt sexuality and I didn't know if she still felt that way," he said.
"There was no convincing but there was definitely a lot of talking about it to make sure we got it right."

Jennifer Lawrence might be one of the most confident movie stars in the world but she still has her insecure moments – namely, having to strip off naked for her new film Red Sparrow.
The star admitted she’d spent a sleepless night worrying about a particular scene in the film which she’d have to be starkers.
‘It was really scary to say es to the movie because I knew the only way to tell the story is if I agreed to really do the scenes and go full Monty,’ she told the Today show in Australia on Monday.
‘It took a while to say, “Yes”. And the night before I didn’t sleep at all and I was obviously really nervous because it is the actual nightmare of standing in front of a classroom naked.
‘But then after I finished the scene I felt empowered.’
The 27-year-old stars in the new film as Dominika Erogova, a Russian ballerina who is recruited into ‘sparrow school’, a Russian intelligence programme in which she trained in the art of seduction and sexual manipulation.
Beginning of dialog window. Escape will cancel and close the window.
Erogova is sent on a mission to extract secrets from an American CIA agent (Joel Edgerton) but her growing feelings for him soon threatens the whole operation.
The film features scenes of torture, during which the actress has freezing water poured on her body – and Jen admits she’d never been so scared of making a film before in her life.
She said: ‘I was terrified. I don’t think I have ever been so scared of doing a movie before in my life. It was a lot of firsts for me.
‘I was getting water poured on myself. I kept asking for it to be heated up. They said, “No, because then it will steam”.
‘”Cool, so I’m really naked getting freezing cold water poured on me”,’ she joked.
Some of Jen’s worry no doubt stems from the 2014 hacking scandal, which saw the actress become the most targeted star in an iCloud hack, with many intimate pictures of the star – and others including Jennifer, Kirsten Dunst, Kate Upton and Amber Heard – leaked online.
She admitted in November 2017 that she was ‘still processing’ the hack .

The star recently hit out at those who criticised her for not pairing a slinky Versace dress with coat at a photocall in London with her red sparrow cast mates last week.
Many thought the picture of her in the strappy dress whilst the men wore coats was ‘sexist’, but Jen called their claims of sexism sexist in itself.
On her official Facebook page, Jennifer wrote: ‘Wow. I don’t really know where to get started on this “Jennifer Lawrence wearing a revealing dress in the cold” controversy. This is not only utterly ridiculous, I am extremely offended.
‘That Versace dress was fabulous, you think I’m going to cover that gorgeous dress up with a coat and a scarf? I was outside for 5 minutes. I would have stood in the snow for that dress because I love fashion and that was my choice.’

Jennifer Lawrence has opened up on the scenes of nudity in her latest movie Red Sparrow , admitting that they were an “actual nightmare”.
Last week, Lawrence opened up on the psychological impact of her nude photo leak , which left her dealing with “a long period when I didn’t want to be seen sexually and I didn’t want anybody to see my flesh”.
Now, the star has told the Today Show in Australia : “It was really scary to say yes to the [ Red Sparrow ] movie because I knew the only way to tell the story is if I agreed to really do the scenes and go full Monty.
“It took a while to say yes – and the night before I didn’t sleep at all and I was obviously really nervous because it is the actual nightmare of standing in front of a classroom naked. But then after I finished the scene, I felt empowered.”

Jennifer Lawrence felt empowered by the nude scenes in her upcoming spy thriller “ Red Sparrow .”
The actress said, at Monday night’s New York premiere of the film, that the challenging role helped her overcome insecurities, including those surrounding her 2014 photo hack.
“The insecurity and fear of being judged for getting nude, what I went through, should that dictate decisions I make for the rest of my life? This movie changed that and I didn’t even realize how important changing that mentality was until it was done,” she said at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. “But I also really challenged myself in ways that I never really had before. The foreign accent. The dancing. It was really taking on a very different leaf.”
Lawrence said she was also mentally prepared for the violent, sexually charged film because director Francis Lawrence had warned her in advance about the tough scenes.
“We talked about it extensively, which was really important for showing up on the day and there being no surprises,” Jennifer Lawrence said. “I knew exactly what was going on and also there was one moment he came out to give me a note and just looked at me like I had clothes, and then I just felt like I had clothes on. I was surrounded by professionals and everybody was completely professional.”
Francis Lawrence said he gave Jennifer Lawrence artist freedom. She was “the first person to see the movie as a whole with those scenes to be able to say ‘I’m with it’ or ‘we need to talk and make some changes.’ And she was totally with it. She didn’t have me pull anything.”
“Look, I wasn’t sure she was going to want to do the movie. And I pitched her the idea in general, but I didn’t tell her much about the content,” Francis Lawrence said. “She liked the idea of the character in general, and I sort of filled her in a little bit along the way, but I wanted her to wait for the script. She thought about it, because clearly she knew what the content was going to be. And as soon as she said, ‘I want to do it,’ I said, ‘OK, I’m coming over to your house and we’re having a really frank conversation.’”
