Jennifer Lawrence felt empowered by the nude scenes in her upcoming spy thriller “ Red Sparrow .”
The actress said, at Monday night’s New York premiere of the film, that the challenging role helped her overcome insecurities, including those surrounding her 2014 photo hack.
“The insecurity and fear of being judged for getting nude, what I went through, should that dictate decisions I make for the rest of my life? This movie changed that and I didn’t even realize how important changing that mentality was until it was done,” she said at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall. “But I also really challenged myself in ways that I never really had before. The foreign accent. The dancing. It was really taking on a very different leaf.”
Lawrence said she was also mentally prepared for the violent, sexually charged film because director Francis Lawrence had warned her in advance about the tough scenes.
“We talked about it extensively, which was really important for showing up on the day and there being no surprises,” Jennifer Lawrence said. “I knew exactly what was going on and also there was one moment he came out to give me a note and just looked at me like I had clothes, and then I just felt like I had clothes on. I was surrounded by professionals and everybody was completely professional.”
Francis Lawrence said he gave Jennifer Lawrence artist freedom. She was “the first person to see the movie as a whole with those scenes to be able to say ‘I’m with it’ or ‘we need to talk and make some changes.’ And she was totally with it. She didn’t have me pull anything.”
“Look, I wasn’t sure she was going to want to do the movie. And I pitched her the idea in general, but I didn’t tell her much about the content,” Francis Lawrence said. “She liked the idea of the character in general, and I sort of filled her in a little bit along the way, but I wanted her to wait for the script. She thought about it, because clearly she knew what the content was going to be. And as soon as she said, ‘I want to do it,’ I said, ‘OK, I’m coming over to your house and we’re having a really frank conversation.’”
The movie, Jennifer Lawrence’s last before her yearlong sabbatical, tackles everything from Russian-American relations and espionage to sex as power — themes that continue to make headlines in the daily news cycle.
Jason Matthews , a former CIA officer with 33 years of service under his belt and author of the “Red Sparrow” novel, said he is not surprised by our current state of affairs.
“I think the Cold War never ended. We’re going through a new Cold War. A second Cold War,” Matthews said. “All the squabbling in Washington — it doesn’t matter if you’re Republican or Democrat — all the squabbling, all the partisanship plays right into the hand of the Kremlin and Vladimir Putin. If we can’t get together, if we can’t make our government run smoothly, the Russians are just clapping their hands.”
While the plot of “Red Sparrow” is fictionalized, it’s based on “the things I did in the CIA, the people I knew” Matthews says. He met with Joel Edgerton to help him wrap his head around what it means to handle a clandestine source.
One of Edgerton’s takeaways was how difficult it would be to date within the field.
“[My biggest takeaway] was just how complicated it would be to have an interpersonal dating-style relationship with somebody if you were in the field. That fact that you would have to report any of those kinds of interactions with your bosses,” Edgerton said. “That seems antithetical to the process of meeting another human being — bringing a third party involved. Right? Like if you’re dating someone, you don’t introduce them to your parents for a while. So when you’re dating and you have to report it to your bosses, it just sounds weird to me.”

Jennifer Lawrence has opened up on the scenes of nudity in her latest movie Red Sparrow , admitting that they were an “actual nightmare”.
Last week, Lawrence opened up on the psychological impact of her nude photo leak , which left her dealing with “a long period when I didn’t want to be seen sexually and I didn’t want anybody to see my flesh”.
Now, the star has told the Today Show in Australia : “It was really scary to say yes to the [ Red Sparrow ] movie because I knew the only way to tell the story is if I agreed to really do the scenes and go full Monty.
“It took a while to say yes – and the night before I didn’t sleep at all and I was obviously really nervous because it is the actual nightmare of standing in front of a classroom naked. But then after I finished the scene, I felt empowered.”

"I feel like something that was taken from me, I got back, and I'm using it in my art."
In one of her most challenging roles to date, Jennifer Lawrence hits the big screen this Thursday in the much-anticipated thriller Red Sparrow .
The actress stepped out of her comfort zone as for the film, which revolves around themes of sex, violence and psychological manipulation and involved filming many scenes fully nude. Lawrence says her decision to take on the role was not easy, but ultimately left her feeling a strong sense of female empowerment.
In a recent interview with Sunrise , the Oscar-winner opened up about her decision to film fully naked, an especially sensitive prospect to Lawrence following her traumatic nude hacking scandal back in 2014.
“I had to really think about it before I even said yes to the movie, obviously," J.Law explained . "Because I couldn’t say yes to the movie and then be like, ‘But can we not use those scenes?’"
It was her pull towards the gripping Red Sparrow script that ultimately urged Lawrence to agree to play the lead role of Russian spy, Dominika Egorova, and face the added obstacle of being fully naked in front of the cameras. Luckily, Lawrence credited the film's supportive cast and crew for making those emotionally-fueled scenes a lot easier for her.
“Everybody went out of their way to make sure that I felt comfortable," Lawrence explained . "And not just comfortable, they made me feel like I had clothes on," she continued in fun, "Almost to a dangerous point where I’d just be like talking and someone’s like, ‘Do you want to put on a robe?’"
In her new movie, “Red Sparrow,” Lawrence stars as a Russian ballerina, coerced into being a spy. The role calls for nudity, something she never thought she’d do after private photos were hacked in 2014 and spread all over the internet. pic.twitter.com/vUzBLdeKv6
Upon self-reflection, Lawrence told 60 Minutes that in a way, stripping down was a way for her to take back what had been taken from her in her privacy scandal years ago.
"I realize that there's a difference between consent and not," J.Law explained. "I showed up for the first day, and I did it, and I felt empowered. I feel like something that was taken from me, I got back, and I'm using it in my art."
Red Sparrow opens in theaters nationwide this Friday, March 2nd.

Jennifer Lawrence has opened up about one of her biggest concerns about doing her first nude scene: the appearance of her nipples.
The 27-year-old actress made the candid confession during an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres's talk show on Friday, admitting that she was so focused on how her nipples might look that she actually berated the crew after they made the set too warm.
After the 60-year-old TV host asked why Jennifer had chosen to take the plunge and do her first nude scene after vowing never to go naked on camera, the actress not only explained her motivation, but shared why she was so concerned about her 'nipples looking huge' as a result of the hot temperatures.
Scene: Jennifer Lawrence appeared on the Ellen Show on Friday where she opened up about her first ever naked scene in new movie, Red Sparrow
First: Despite saying that she would never go naked in a movie, the 27-year-old actress got fully nude in the action-packed movie, and revealed she was worried about how her nipples looked
Ellen opened up the conversation by gushing about Jen's new action-packed spy movie Red Sparrow, which was officially released on March 2, noting that she and her wife Portia de Rossi loved the thriller.
She then questioned Jennifer about her nude scene, asking what it was that had made the actress decide to strip down on camera for the very first time, after she previously insisted that she would never go naked in a movie.
'I think I finally just got hot,' Jennifer laughed, while sipping on a rum cocktail and laughing.
Then, more serious this time Jen shared, 'To me it was really just an amazing script and story.
'I loved the character and I just didn't want to miss out on it because of like my weird insecurities so I did it and it was really lovely.'
Cold: Jennifer (pictured) said the weather was freezing in Hungary and she was always complaining about being cold so the crew made the room of the sex scene warm and toasty
Amazing: Even though they were trying to be nice, Jen recalls walking into the warm room and screaming, 'What are you doing with this heat! My nipples are going to be huge!'
Jennifer continued saying what made her feel much more comfortable was the fact that the entire crew was from Hunger Games which she thinks made it better.
She explained the scenario of the day she had to film her naked sex scene saying the crew were all really nice and they all went in at three in the morning to set up heaters.
Pointing out the fact that the weather was freezing 'because it was a very Hungarian winter' she admitted that she was always complaining about being cold.
So, the day of she finally gets to the set and walks into the room and said it was so warm and toasty when all of a sudden she started screaming in an aggressive manner, 'What are you doing with this heat! My nipples are going to be huge!'
