Popular downloads on the Pirate Bay torrent site currently include "Maleficent," "The Fault In Our Stars," and, despite the site's pro-privacy stance, nude pictures of Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and other stars victimized in the “fappening” hack . The notorious piracy website has managed to evade international law enforcement and copyright authorities for more than a decade, and it has been championed as well as demonized for facilitating the illegal download of music, movies and other media.
While attracting a fan base of millions , the Pirate Bay’s founders have described their site as an anti-censorship tool that helps the freedom of expression. The Pirate Bay’s willingness to host torrent files that help downloaders access the database of hundreds of nude photos of celebrities, though, has raised questions about its image as an Internet crusader.

"It's not porn, it's a gross violation of people's intimate and most private moments," wrote one Reddit user . "Just because someone took you there doesn't mean you get to look through someone's f---ing windows."
"Let's be clear here," said another, sarcastically. "Stolen pictures of a celebrity are okay, but we all hate the [National Security Agency] for tracking us while we search for them. What hypocrisy?"
Last year, Pirate Bay co-founder Peter Sunde said that his creation, which temporarily renamed itself The Freedom Bay , “obviously” started “going the wrong way.”
“This has been the case for many years,” Sunde told TechWeekEurope at the time. “That's one of the reasons I left as it started focusing on the wrong things. The Pirate Bay is its own worst enemy ... I think it needs to shut down in order for something to grow out of the lack of Pirate Bay.”
KickAss Torrents, also known as KickAss Tor and KickAss.to, has also helped spread the photos, with “Jennifer Lawrence” and “fappening” among the most popular search terms on the website, according its own front page metric. Some 70,000 “seeders” were hosting the file on KickAss at press time, with a similar number posting on the Pirate Bay. ("Fappening" is a term created by the joining of "happening" and "fap," slang for masturbation.)
Both sites have built their reputations on the illegal dissemination of copyrighted material, and Internet audiences are accustomed to them helping users share copies of movies and music. In contrast, the discussion boards Reddit and 4Chan (where the images of Lawrence, Upton, et al., were first posted), which are also known for their "information wants to be free" philosophy, have removed questionable files. Reddit, for example, banned images of Olympic star McKayla Maroney , who was underage at the time the purported nude pictures of her were captured -- raising the risk of child pornography charges.
The spread of these images also raises questions about 4Chan’s just-announced decision to register for protection under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, giving copyright owners the ability to complain to the site’s administrators if their content has been uploaded without permission. While 4Chan will likely adhere to any requests, the mere act of taking photos down doesn’t prevent users from saving and re-uploading them in the interim.

The Reddit thread dedicated to publishing the naked images of a number of celebrities stolen during a hack of Apple's iCloud has been banned by moderators.
Users trying to access the naked pictures on the subreddit 'The Fappening' are now met with an image of a closed door and police tape with the word "caution".
The collection, which consisted of around 200 pictures of high-profile people including Jennifer Lawrence, Kirsten Dunst and Kate Upton, were initially posted on the 4chan image sharing site on 31 August.
They are widely thought to have been obtained by a hack of Apple's iCloud services.
They were then disseminated even further on other image-sharing services, including the subreddit 'the Fappening' , which quickly became the internet’s chief hub of the controversial collection. The page has reportedly received 250 million views in the past week.
Yishani Wong, the chief executive of Reddit, said the decision to ban the webpage was made on the grounds that the images had been obtained illegally.
He said Reddit had taken a week to make the decision because the website had wanted to debate the merits of free speech.
Reddit is a renowned advocate for internet freedom.
“While current US law does not prohibit linking to stolen materials, we deplore the theft of these images and we do not condone their widespread distribution,” he said in a blog post .
“In accordance with our legal obligations, we expeditiously removed content hosted on our servers as soon as we received DMCA requests from the lawful owners of that content.”
Mr Wong said Reddit is not so much a company as it is “the government of a new type of community.”
Over the course of the week it emerged that some of the pictures taken were of celebrities when they were still minors. It is considered illegal for a website to display naked photographs of anyone under the age of 18.
In response to this, Reddit said that it “immediately started removing things which [it] found to be linking to those pictures, and also recommended that the image hosts be contacted so they could be removed more permanently,” according to an official announcement .
“We do not allow links on reddit to child pornography or images which sexualise children,” it stated.
“The images which were DMCAd were continually being reposted constantly on the subreddit. We would takedown images in response to those DMCAs, but it quickly devolved into a game of whack-a-mole. We'd execute a takedown, someone would adjust, reupload, and then repeat. This same practice was occurring with the underage photos, requiring our constant intervention.”
