Jennifer Lawrence has dealt with her fair share of tabloid headaches over her career — first when nude photos of the Oscar-winning actress were infamously leaked online in 2014, and this year when she was videotaped pole-dancing at a birthday party in Vienna, Austria.
For her cover story in the September issue of Vogue , Lawrence opens up about struggling to protect her privacy, adding that she’s “always waiting to get blindsided again.”
“My biggest fear from that whole thing was that people were going to think that I was trying to be sexy,” she says of the pole-dancing tape, which she brushed off with a sorry-not-sorry style Facebook post in May. “Also, it looked like I had taken my shirt off. I was in a crop top. I did not take off my shirt. I’m on the phone with my lawyers, and everybody’s like, ‘Is there anything we need to know before it comes out?’ And I’m like, ‘No, it’s all there.’”
But it was the highly-publicized nude photo hack, which targeted Lawrence and several other celebrities back in 2014, that really rattled the Silver Linings Playbook actress.
“It’s scary when you feel the whole world judges you,” she adds. “I think people saw [the hacking] for what it was, which was a sex crime, but that feeling, I haven’t been able to get rid of it. Having your privacy violated constantly isn’t a problem if you’re perfect. But if you’re human, it’s terrifying. When my publicist calls me, I’m like, ‘Oh, my God, what is it?’ Even when it’s nothing. I’m always waiting to get blindsided again.”
Currently, Lawrence is gearing up for two upcoming film releases: her performance in the cryptic Mother! from filmmaker Darren Aronofsky in September, followed by action-thriller Red Sparrow next March.

Jennifer Lawrence has come out fighting this week, demanding that the theft and leaking of nude photos be reclassified as a sex crime . Her preferred defendants are the website which hosted the pictures, the people who put them there, and everyone who clicked and looked.
Having private naked pictures spread over the web certainly looks, and must feel, like an assault. But as it is her privacy which has been violated and not her person, assault charges would not suit. What does? The law, whilst fairly adaptive, struggles to keep pace with the malign evolution of cyberspace.
But it is clear on hacking: unauthorised access to computer material is an offence under S1 Computer Misuse Act 1990 , punishable by up to two years imprisonment. 1990 was time immemorial in computer terms, and the Act was updated in 2006 to incorporate offences of unauthorised access with intent to commit another offence, punishable by up to five years. That would apply if, for example, the hacked photographs were then used to blackmail their subject.
Uploading the hacked data to another website where it can be readily accessed is a trickier area to police. Crime has its fashions like everything else, and malicious posting of explicit sexual material online is on the rise. Unless it is so grossly obscene that it is caught by the Obscene Publications Act, and a jury finds the material is such as to deprave and corrupt anyone seeing it, there isn’t any specific offence to punish such an act. That needs a very high standard of revoltingness, and while naked pictures like Lawrence's are obviously problematic, in terms of their content they don’t come anywhere near this category.
Threats to kill or harm online get caught by existing law, and Section 1 Malicious Communications Act 1988 and S27 of the Communications Act 2003 are used for trolling and Twittering misbehaviour, catching electronic communications which are grossly offensive, indecent obscene or false. It can stretch to pictures, but it is the material itself that must offend and not the fact it is being disseminated.
However, posting pictures of a person could come under harassment or stalking provisions. Those require that there is a course of conduct which under the Protection of Harassment Act 1997 means at least two incidents: stalking under S2a of the Act includes publishing any statement or other material relating to a person or coming from them. If the images were posted to two separate sites by the same person they could be charged accordingly.
Thousands of people saw the Jennifer Lawrence pictures. Are they criminally liable? Making, possessing and distributing indecent images of children is prohibited, but accessing pictures of naked adults even doing what adults do is perfectly lawful – unless caught by the offence of voyeurism.
Under S67 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 watching or recording a person doing a private act, for sexual gratification, knowing the other person does not consent, is an imprisonable offence. A “private act” includes being nude or just wearing underwear in a private place. Would the offence stretch to cover Lawrence’s case? Probably not, as the section implies a live person being observed or recorded, not the viewing of the record made. And proving it was viewed for sexual gratification and not from vulgar curiosity would be tricky.
If there is no ready charge for such “sex crimes”, should new laws be made? Rushed legislation makes bad law, and the creaking criminal justice system cannot and ought not to police all possible human misconduct. And there is a remedy: understanding that the internet is not a fine and private place.

The final of four hackers who leaked private nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence and other female celebrities back in 2014 was sentenced to eight months in prison on Wednesday, according to a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office in the District of Connecticut.
George Garofano, 26, had pled guilty in April to engaging in a phishing scheme that helped him illegally obtain usernames and passwords to private Apple iCloud accounts of approximately 240 people , many of whom are in the entertainment industry. Emails appeared to be from Apple security account he sent between April 2013 and Oct. 2014, encouraging victims to send him their personal information.
He admitted he then used that information to steal said information from his victims, including their private nude photographs and private videos, authorities said. Usernames and passwords, as well as the materials he stole from the victims, were also traded with other individuals.
Lawrence was one of Garofano’s victims, as were stars like Kate Upton , Kirsten Dunst , and Meagan Good — their photos spread online without their consent.
“When the hacking thing happened, it was so unbelievably violating that you can’t even put it into words ,” Lawrence told The Hollywood Reporter in November 2017. “I feel like I got gang-banged by the f—— planet — like, there’s not one person in the world that is not capable of seeing these intimate photos of me. You can just be at a barbecue and somebody can just pull them up on their phone. That was a really impossible thing to process.”
Three other hackers who participated in the leak have already been sentenced , The Guardian reported, each getting between 9-month and 18-months prison terms.
Garofano will report for his eight months on Oct. 10, 2018, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said, and is currently released on a $50,000 bond. Jail time will be followed by three years of supervised release for Garofano, authorities added, and 60 hours of community service.
The sentencing comes nearly four years to the day after news of the leaks began surfacing.
“When I first found out it was happening, my security reached out to me,” Lawrence told THR back in November 2017. “It was happening minute-to-minute — it was almost like a ransom situation where they were releasing new ones every hour or so.”
An outspoken supporter of women’s rights , the actress said the hack even made her question her viability as a role model. “I think, like, a year and a half ago, somebody said something to me about how I was ‘a good role model for girls,’ and I had to go into the bathroom and sob because I felt like an imposter — I felt like, ‘I can’t believe somebody still feels that way after what happened,’ ” she said. “It’s so many different things to process when you’ve been violated like that.”
Though the prosecution of the four involved brings justice to the case, Lawrence likely isn’t feeling closure. In her THR chat, she said that legal actions wasn’t going to bring her peace.
“None of that was gonna bring my nude body back to me and [former boyfriend] Nic [Hoult], the person that they were intended for,” Lawrence said. “I was just interested in healing.”
