BFvsGF Split: Jesse Wellens Says YouTube Was 'Toxic' for His Relationship, but He Still Loves Jeana Smith 'Greatly'

After announcing their breakup – and a break from YouTube – in May, online stars Jesse Wellens and Jeana Smith are finally opening up about their split.
“It was great in the beginning but then it slowly…it kinda like polluted our relationship and made it toxic,” Wellens, 31, says in a preview clip exclusive to PEOPLE from Friday’s episode of Shane Dawson s video podcast, Shane & Friends , available on Fullscreen.
“We still love each other greatly and we still have lots of respect for each other,” Wellens admits of where things stand with Smith, 31. “I just felt like we were doing stuff for the vlog and not for our relationship anymore.”
Wellens’ interview comes just a few weeks after Smith ended their YouTube hiatus and shared a video entitled "Update" with the 8.9 million subscribers on June 13.
“I feel like I’ve been on an emotional roller coaster. some days I’m okay. some days I’m down. but i think that’s completely normal,” says Smith, who admits she doesn’t like the attention she and Wellens have received because of their split – says in the video “Jesse and I have been speaking. we still love and care about each other. I’m always there for him. We’ve experienced so much together in life and i guess now we are going to try and experience things individually and see what it’s like.”
Wellens – who is now living in New York and looking to establish a relationship with his teenage daughter while Smith remains in Philadelphia – echoes his ex’s sentiments in the Shane & Friends interview.
“I couldn t figure out, ‘Am I doing this because I want to do this or am I doing this for the vlog?’ And it was just bad so and I was, like, ‘We need to figure something out,’ ” he says. “So we are just going to stop daily vlogging and maybe take some time apart to try and figure out who we are as people because we only knew who we were together.”
Since Smith posted “Update,” both she and Wellens have posted videos to their BFvsGF channel , while only clips from their YouTube Red series Prank Academy have been posted to their PrankvsPrank channel .
In an interview with PEOPLE just a month before announcing their split, both Wellens and Smith discussed what it was like working together while being a couple.
“It’s hard to work with someone you’re in a relationship but we figure out how to make it work and maintain,” Wellens explained in April.
Added Smith, “It’s stressful but it’s – there’s positives and negatives about it because we get to do all these great opportunities together and if we weren’t working together we wouldn’t be able to bring each other along on these amazing adventures and I think it’s awesome we can do it.”
