The daughter of television actor Jerry Van Dyke, apparently upset over marital problems, killed herself in her North Hollywood apartment, Los Angeles police said Monday. A friend found the body of Kelly Jean Van Dyke-Nance, 33, hanging in her bedroom about 5 p.m. Sunday, said Detective Mike Coffey.

We discovered that the late Jerry Van Dyke, who passed away on Sunday, suffered a tragedy over 25 years ago when his daughter, Kelly Jean, committed suicide in 1991. Below we include the Los Angeles Times article of her death and after that is a story from The National Enquirer about her death. When we saw the Enquirer story, we did do the research and confirmed Kelly Jean’s death.

Investigators found no suicide note, Coffey said, but about 20 minutes before she was found, Van Dyke-Nance phoned her husband, an actor on location in Madera County, and spoke of killing herself, Coffey said. Her husband, Jack Nance, phoned the Madera County Sheriff’s Department, which in turn contacted Los Angeles police, Coffey said. But by the time police arrived at the couple’s Bellingham Avenue apartment, her friend had already found her dead, Coffey said.
Van Dyke-Nance’s father recently received an Emmy nomination for his role on the ABC program “Coach.” Her uncle is actor Dick Van Dyke
The National Enquirer reported that after Jerry Van Dyke’s success with “Coach” , Kelly Jean, who was a struggling actress, appeared in a lesbian, porno film entitled, ” The Coach’s Daughter” Billing herself as “Nancie Kellee”, she went public when she did the film to embarrass Jerry. There was bitterness between the father and the daughter since the 1974 bitter divorce of Jerry from her mother, Carol.
Before her suicide, Kelly told the Enquirer, “I was desperately crying out for him, bit once he was with [his second wife] Shirley, he turned his back on his family.” Jerry blamed her porn career on her drug use saying, “I’ve done everything a father could do to overcome her addictions.”
Kelly Jean was 33 years old and was married to “Twin Peaks” star Jack Nance when she was found hanging from a nylon chord in her bedroom of her North Hollywood apartment. The Los Angeles police said the suicide was apparently triggered after an argument with her husband over the phone. The couple was headed for a divorce at the time.
Jerry Van Dyke statement to the media was ” This was a death directly related to alcohol and drug abuse. I did everything I could to help her. She had extensive therapy and was in various substance abuse programs. But she always reverted back her self-destructive pattern. Now there is nothing I can do!”
The Enquirer reported that her husband, Jack Nance, did everything to try to save her, frantically, after her threat of suicide over the phone. Kelly’s body was found by her close friend, Lisa Loring, who played Wednesday Addams on the Addams Family in the mid-1960s.
In her interview with the Enquirer just before her death she admitted, ” I was desperate to get my father’s attention and when I didn’t get it I went wild. I was an alcoholic and I began having sex when I was 11. I even went to a wild Hollywood party and was drinking heavily. I came on to a major movie star and we ended up having sex. When my father found out about my alcohol and sex problems, he forced me to live with my grandmother.
Lisa Loring (Wednesday of the Addams Family) said, ” She started doing porn films to get back at her father. She let everyone know. I think her suicide was her last attempt to get his attention! I’m not sure there was anything that anyone could have done”
As they continued to release her porno films, exploiting Jerry’s name he said, “I know my daughter. She would have never killed herself without telling why. It doesn’t make sense to me. I will never rest till I get to the bottom of this.”
