Often I really want to say 'I'm excited' in French and I know very well that though 'Je suis excité' is grammatically correct, it means a sexual excitement in French and I suppose it's one of the biggest mistakes for English-speaking learners.
So how would you recommend saying 'I'm so excited'/'I can't wait'/'I'm really looking forward' in French?
Can you add a little context on the sentence ? For example if you're going to meet someone you can say : "je suis(vraiment) impatient de te voir" // "I can't wait to see you" or "j'ai hâte de te voir" // "I'm looking forward to see you"
Je suis ravi(e) de is an easy way to say you're excited for.
J'attends avec impatience...I can't wait.
First, "excité" doesn't always have a sexual meaning. It has both meanings.
"Les enfants sont excités, ils vont ouvrir leurs cadeaux de Noël dans quelques minutes."
"Tu t'en vas voir le nouveau Star Wars dans une heure, es-tu excité?"
The translation for 'I can't wait'/'I'm really looking forward' is J'AI HÂTE.
The difference between the two is that "être excité" means that you cannot remain calm. "Avoir hâte" is more of an an inner emotion.
"Tu t'en vas voir le nouveau Star Wars dans une heure, es-tu excité?"
Honestly I think this is something you guys got from English... It would definitely sound weird and sexual in France.
It's also been explained to me before that « être excité » typically cannot stand alone in a sentence; there has to be something that is keeping you from remaining calm. English has some phrases like this — phrases it would be really weird to use as stand alone although not technically incorrect, but none are coming to mind.
French people do say, 'Il est excité,' in the same way English people say, "He's excited," and they do say it in relation to children despite it being true there's a sexual connotation. You could say it, for example, when talking about children being excited for Christmas, or for a birthday. It means to be really, really excited.
An old French teacher of mine told me not to use it for the reason you mention ("It translates as 'horny,'" she said), but parents have said it to me in the playground with no hint of irony. You can say it, in short, but you're right to be careful. "J'ai hâte" and "Je suis ravi(e)" are the expressions I hear the most (I live in Lorraine and I've been in France for five years).
French people do say, 'Il est excité,' in the same way English people say, "He's excited," and they do say it in relation to children despite it being true there's a sexual connotation.
I disagree. We say "il est excité" for children, but it means something like "he's restless", not "he's excited".
"Il me tarde" - means you can't wait for something etc. :)
It's correct but it's a literary expression which sounds weird in casual conversation...
"J'ai hâte (de faire quelque chose)" ou "vivement + noun" are slighty better but still not as natural as "I can't wait" in my opinion.
You could say 'je suis chaud pour ..' (I am keen for) but this is can also mean sexually excited it just depends on the context. Also its pretty colloquial.
E.g. 'Tu veux aller au cinéma ce soir?' 'Oui, je suis chaud'
Note that the feminine version (je suis chaude) is even more sexually oriented than the expression we are talking about.
It sounds very weird to me but that's how my teacher corrects me
To add onto the other responses, the most natural way i'd say "i can't wait (to do something)" would be "je suis pressé (de faire quelque chose)".
I think of « pressé » as being pressed for time, rushed because the clock is ticking down.
What about «j'ai hâte de queleque chose». I made the mistake of «je ne peut pas attendre de ...» une fois.

“Je suis excité” is a commonly debated phrase among French language learners and even native speakers. For some it means being aroused, while others don’t think so. In this article, you will find out what it means and how to say “I am excited” in French.
Don’t forget to subscribe to our Youtube channel for more videos like this one.
According the well-known French dictionary Larousse; “exciter” means:
For beginners: to excite, to exhilarate, to overstimulate, to stimulate, to provoke, to intensify, to sharpen, and also …to arouse.
La vitesse excite Sandra.
Speed exhilarates Sandra.
Je suis très excitée à l’idée de représenter mon pays.
I’m absolutely thrilled about representing my country.
Les enfants sont excités, ils vont ouvrir leurs cadeaux de Noël demain.
The kids are excited, they will open their Christmas gifts tomorrow.

As you can see, “excité” doesn’t always have a sexual connotation. It really depends on the context. But you have to be careful when using the expression “je suis excite(e)”, especially when it isn’t followed by any explanations as to why you are excited.
“Je suis excité(e)” used alone often refers to being aroused. Another variation is “Ça m’excite.” It excites me; which sounds even more sexual than “ Je suis excité(e) ”.Use with caution if you don’t want to get misunderstood.
The bottom line is that “je suis excité(e)” isn’t always bad and can be used with non-sexual things as well. But if you like to play it safe here are some other ways to say “I am excited” in French.
Je suis enthousiaste.
I am enthusiastic.

J e suis impatient(e) de te voir.

Je suis ravi(e)…
Je suis content(e)…

Examples:
Je suis ravi(e)de passer la journée avec vous.
I am glad (excited) to spend the day with you.
Je suis content(e) de faire partie de groupe.
I am happy (excited) to be part of this group.
Would you be able to tell me, which one of these sentences, carries a sexual connotation?
Sandy est très excitée depuis samedi dernier.
Andy s’est offert un voiture de sport rouge, il est tout excité.
