This October, Mark Knopfler ’s first five studio albums will be issued as The Studio Albums 1996-2007 as 6CD set of an 11LP vinyl box.
The albums included are: Golden Heart (1996), Sailing To Philadelphia (2000), The Ragpicker’s Dream (2002), Shangri-La (2004), and Kill To Get Crimson (2007) – and both sets include an exclusive bonus disc of studio b-sides from this period: Gravy Train: The B-Sides 1996-2007 . Neither Golden Heart nor Sailing To Philadelphia have been released on vinyl before.
The audio of each album has been newly remastered by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios. The albums are pressed on 180g black vinyl and the box set includes six embossed art prints of each album cover. The CD box gets the ‘mini-me’ treatment of this and comes with six art cards.
The Studio Albums 1996-2007 will be released on 1 October 2021 via UMC/Mercury. SDE Members can use the ratings tool at the top to offer feedback on the CD box set.

I wish they’d do a set like this for Dire Straits. Their B-sides and the ExtendedancEPlay EP have never been collected.
The box was pressed in the Czech Republic by GZ Media in the known poor quality. Consistent crackling and cracking on all 11 LPs. I had to send them back today unfortunately
Bought the ‘Shangri-La’ LP for a mere € 21.30 in 2005. Prices are insane on discogs nowadays.
Slightly off topic!!,..IV just recently received a copy of Robbie mc intoshs new album, SeaWorld!! Jimmy Egypt guitar luthier to the stars and Robbie’s mate gave me a copy on Monday and have been listening to it in the car all week!
Robbie sent Jimmy two copies,, very, very good ,he’s working with mark on some stuff at the moment!!
One nice thing I’ve not seen mentioned here – for “Sailing to Philadelphia,” the US label dropped “One More Matinee” for “Do America.” This box seems to have both tracks on STP.
Now up on Amazon US – but expensive at around $250 (vinyl) – much better deal through Amazon FR, about $100 less. Will keep watching prices. Very much looking forward to this release!
For people saying this doesn’t need remastering – think again. While the recording quality on anything MK does is never less than superb, quite a few of these albums were mastered quite “hot”, especially if you didn’t have HDCD decoding.
It’s only after this covered time period that he moved towards more dynamic mastering. So there is room for improvement.
Slightly puzzling CD release as two of these albums (Sailing To Philadelphia and Shangri La) were already released as HDCD/DVD-A 2 disc sets with 5.1 and other bits and sound pretty damn good to my ears. Kill to Get Crimson was issued as a CD/DVD with Electronic Press Kit and other video goodies. Will Miles Showell’s remastering be that much of an improvement to justify this? I guess the price point is fairly modest and we do get some B-Sides – I’ll stop whining.
Unless I’m mistaken and it was released on both formats, ‘Shangri-La’ was a Super Audio CD, not a DVD-Audio. I have the SACD, which sounds quite lovely.
This box gets a 4.2 rating from the SDE community. Guys, this is Mark Knopfler. The most exciting reissue he has ever done was putting the widely available Dire Straits studio albums in a so so box. For his fans this guy is as boring as it gets. Getting a bonus disc with b-sides is the wildest thing he has ever done. I’m getting this. After the price comes down.
Kauwgompie, you’re being a bit harsh with the ‘boring’ tag; Mark comes across as a regular guy who happens to have a massive talent. I know you’re referring to reissues, which could be enhanced, but he’s generous with his music when it comes to his album releases. His most recent albums have additional songs for not a lot more money over the standard version. Tracker had four, Down The Road Wherever had two, Privateering had five studio ‘live’ tracks Ragpicker’s Dream had an additional disc of live performances. The box sets had some additional songs.
I’d still love a re-release of Alchemy with the full concert. I hate the sound on the re-mastered cd, which is a down grade on the LP. I’ve the bluray, but not the kit to get the best sound out of it.
Yeah… include Industrial Disease and Portobelle Belle!
Maybe we’ll get some live albums sets in the future?
this is nice, even though only the first two (Golden Heart and Sailing to Philadelphia) are really good and all of the other are alb ums with 3-4 good tracks and lots of fillers (even filled with good guitars, they still sound like fillers to me). Getting them on vinyl will kind of “force me” to rediscover the songs in their entirety and not skip around the middle of a track to the next one, so maybe I’ll change my mind.. I would have loved a special edition of “Sailing To Philadelphia”, with a 5.1 mix. The surround mix of Shangri-la (which is on the SACD and can be found for not much money) is average but it brings an extra something which makes me come back to that album, even though it is still not his best.
Try The Ragpicker’s Dream then, his best solo album in my opinion!

Yes I saw that a few minutes I finished writing my post. Unfortunately, It is so rare nobody is selling it on any site where I searched (ebay, discogs, amazon and a couple of my local second hand CD shop) Makes me wonder if it even really exists
I own this so it definitely exists! I honestly can’t remember if I loved the mix or not though. Maybe I should give it a spin before dropping money on this box set.
It may churlish to have a note of negativity, but it is what it is. The main draw here is for the Vinyl-Heads. 11 discs for them, and at around £12 a disc is decent price for them. I’m CD, and for me it’s a bit of a damp squib. The trouble here is the albums in the box can be bought in their original guise for about half what this box costs. I know, because I’ve bought three of them within the last couple months. Not only that, but none of the three I have need remastering. Of course, this set has the CD of B-Sides, but to balance that out the original CD’s have good booklets with lyrics etc,. which is missing here. I also find the box art to be……. well it’s horrible isn’t it?
So, good if you’re into Vinyl, uneccessary for CD owners, imo.
Yes, this looks a more enticing set for Vinyl fans. The CD version is reasonably-ish priced, given the main draw is the B-sides disc. That’s what sets it apart from the Dire Straits box and its more budget-level price.
I’ve got all the individual albums in various guises (and the ones that followed), so it may need a price-drop to get me interested.

Correct! :) But in this case, it would be a miracle to see the B-sides disc released on its own. That’s this box set’s real draw.
This is excellent news. Mark Knopfler managed to drop the baggage that went with Dire Straits and set out recording brilliant album after brilliant album. Some of the early LP’s cost decent money, so to get the first five albums, all double LP’s, on amazon France is a bargain (depending on where the £ / € rate ends up in October). I like the news that there will be a set of embossed prints included.
The only problem with collections like this is, if you don’t know the albums already, it is virtually impossible to absorb and enjoy all the albums as you would when you buy a new release every two or three years. I don’t have that problem in this instance, but I’ve lots of box sets that I’ve never got around to playing half the albums. I’d love to work my way through the Isley Brothers box set properly, but I don’t have the time; at least that’s my excuse.
I have felt guilty for not giving multi-album boxed sets their due attention. They come so fast, (I buy many quickly after release for fear of going out of print), such that I don’t have time to listen to them before the next one comes. It’s doubly hard if I have only a fleeting familiarity with an artist. In the last year or so I’ve struggled to give the time to the the two Tangerine Dream sets, Donna Summer – Encore, Porcupine Tree – The Delerium Years, and worst of all, The Divine Comedy box – 23 CDs and a DVD that I have ripped to my phone to play in my car or on headphones and to home hard drive for streaming through my home system, but to which I have barely had a chance to listen.
I am trying to learn not to jump at boxed sets for artists I either don’t know, don’t know well, or to who I am ambivalent. This seems like a place to start. I’ll wait for boxes I really want coming later this year: Ultravox – Rage in Eden 40th, and I hope, Human League – Dare 40th (if not this year, then when?).
I’m in the same boat as you. Tons of backlogged multi album sets still awaiting a spin. Like you, I fear on missing out….you never can tell which one of these deluxe sets becomes hard to find almost immediately after release like the early Tull sets, McCartney series, Thin Lizzy etc…I still kick myself for not getting the Suzi Quatro and Kayak boxes a few tears ago.
Oh c’mon, just when I was starting to seriously collect his solo work… but even without lyric booklets this is too good to be true.
And I’ve only recently just finished collecting his (non-soundtrack) solo albums! All I need is the b-sides disc.
After reintroducing myself to Dire Straits with last years CD box set and thoroughly enjoying it I had decided to maybe dabble in MKs solo stuff. Outside of the excellent track Sailing To Philadelphia , which Wogan played a lot I have heard little else. This box set looks like an excellent way to take a punt.
So the question is will there be another box for his studio albums post 2017? And will they do a box of all of them, a la sting?
most of the later albums are in print. these early ones are not.

ha. Cool. There is less stuff than I would have thought. Mainly the ExtendeDancePlay ep really. I was expecting more B-sides, but they seem to be mostly other album tracks having had a quick look through Wikipedia
There are a few odd edits on top of that… in Italy, they managed to cut down Telegraph Road to five minutes?!
Amazon doesn’t say , but assume the (vinyl if not the cd) set is limited as Sound of Vinyl said they were only getting 200 copies?
they do that a lot to get people to order they also do x amount of ltd copies left to sell stuff
