Well.....this is my first proper entry into this LJ......and I've got one hell of an entry for it. As many of you in the furry community know.....there are few furries that are more controversial than Jay Naylor. Jay Naylor is the creator of "Better Days", a webcomic in which Naylor espouses his right-wing, conservative views. He also does various pornographic furry portfolios and comics for purchase. Now, Naylor has been said to not be very easy to get along with.......however.......I'm afraid I had to experience it for myself before I actually believed anyone. Now, I must admit that I DO like Naylor's art style. I'm INSANELY jealous of his cute, manga-inspired technique that is cute, yet sexy. I like that. However, Naylor has gotten criticism for his portrayal of various races. Not because of the species he chooses to represent them, but because of their behavior. I've had my misgivings about this, so I decided to e-mail him about it. I had NO idea what I was getting into. The following his my e-mail......and then...his reponse. "Hello, Mr. Naylor. :) My name's Angelcake, and I just wanted to tell you that I absolutely adore your art. Your technique is something that I am SO envious of. I myself am an artist and comics writer, and the best that I can do is R. Crumb style funny animals. I also do enjoy your comic Better Days, to some degree. I do have an apprecciation for webcomics, as I believe that some day they will become a respected medium. Even though I deeply disagree with some of the political views espoused in the comic, I can still appreciate it for what it is. However, I try my best to be an honest person, and as such I have to tell you that there are some things about the comic that I do have a problem with. However, these are my own personal misgivings, so take them as you will. My main problem is the way you portray black people in your comics. Now, I'm not so naive as to believe that stereotypes come out of nowhere......but..... Well.....let me put it this way. As you have already seen, I'm from Macon. Where I live, there are approximately two black people for every single white person. I have met, befriended, talked to, played with, eaten with, and even prayed with various black people of various backgrounds, and even with this experience, I STILL think that your portrayal is a little much. However, that's just my personal problem. I'm in no way mean to imply that you are a racist. It's just that I sometimes find the portrayal a little too much and somewhat unrealistic. Anyway, I DO genuinely enjoy your work, even though I strongly disagree with some of your political beliefs. I hope to talk to you some day. Good bye. :)" Sincerely, Angelcake Fox Nice enough, I think. And it's how I really feel. Then....I got a reponse from Naylor. "Which "black person" do I depict in a manner which you find disagreeable? Tony? Mavis? Nikki? The fact is, the hyena characters in my comics are as diversely portrayed as my feline characters. However, I won't go out of my way to avoid depicting some people who display a culture that I've had first hand experience with, a rude culture that glorifies outward aggression, harsh language, sexual predation, and parasitic welfare. If you think this is an exageration, you haven't seen what I have experienced and you're calling me a liar." Jay Naylor Um, OK. What the Fuck?! Now, you'd think that Naylor, like any normal person, would give me a "thank you for enjoying my work", or something like that. I believe that an artist is lucky to have his or her work viewed by the people, not the other way around. Furthermore, I should point out that I'm not the first person to have misgivings about his portrayal of race. Shawntae Howard, the creator of the Extinctioners, has publicly spoken up about it as well. People have always told me that Naylor is not an easy person to get along with, and I should have listened to them. I tried to think the best of Naylor, and I'm afraid I was wrong. It isn't about whether or not he's a racist anymore. The truth is simple. Jay Naylor is an asshole. Well, that's all for today. Until next time, blessed be everyone. Furwashi! _\!./ Angelcake Fox
Why do I always poke at Ralph Hayes, Jr.?
I'm starting my own political party.....
Don't worry, I do plan on posting more eventually. I'm still a bit new to this whole LJ thing.
