EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) - A man is in the Warrick County Jail, charged with murder and neglect of a dependent.
Thaddious Rice, 23, is being held without bond.
Officials say it's in connection with the death of 10-month-old Jaxson Wheeler.
He died in April, and his death has been under investigation ever since.
The autopsy results just released Monday show Jaxson died from cerebral edema and hemorrhage due to blunt head trauma.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Rice was watching the baby while his mother was working, and took the baby to the E.R. on April 10.
He didn't have a pulse and wasn't breathing, but hospital staff were able to revive him and put him on a ventilator.
Deputies say Rice left the hospital when they arrived.
They say the baby's mother told them Rice planned to harm himself.
He was later found at a gas station, and agreed to talk with authorities.
Deputies say he didn't ask about the condition of Jaxson, but instead said he planned to sue the apartment complex in Newburgh where he was hurt.
During the interview, deputies say Rice told them he lost his footing on the staircase while holding Jaxson in a car seat. He says he hit his head, and woke up to find the baby at the bottom of the stairs, still in his seat.
He says the baby wasn't breathing, He says he tried to do CPR, then drove him to the hospital.
Authorities say the stair case was U-shaped, and didn't show damage that would have been caused from a car seat falling down it.
They say Rice then changed his story several times, and told them he sat the car seat on the railing. He says the baby fell off the railing all the way to the ground below. He says the baby's heart must of stopped because he was so scared from the fall.
Deputies say Rice never called 911, and didn't seem to be in a rush when he took Jaxson to the E.R.
They say he submitted to a drug test, which showed he tested positive for THC.
Doctors say some of Jaxson's injuries would not have happened with a fall, and he showed signs of prior abuse.
The next day, a former babysitter was interviewed. She says she noticed bruises and took pictures of them in case she would need to report them.
She says over the past few months of Jaxson's life, she noticed changes. She says he was more attached to his mother and easily startled.
Rice is already facing trial in two other cases.
Court records show he was charged last November for two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor. That trial is set for Dec. 13.
He was also arrested last March for rape . The trial in the case is set for Nov. 5.
