Temple Sinai welcomes new rabbi – at neighboring church
Temple Sinai Rabbi David Lipper takes a selfie with his new congregation before services on Friday night, July 8.
Synagogue moves services while awaiting A/C repair Two days before Temple Sinai was to hold a congregation-wide celebration welcoming its new rabbi, the air-conditioning in the sanctuary went out. “There was no way that we could host Rabbi [David] Lipper’s first service; there was just no way,” Diane Adler, Temple Sinai president, told the JHV. “At that point, we had 120 people that RSVP’d.” Adler emailed a friend, Phil Berrie, of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, who contacted the rector and vestry (church leadership). Within half-an-hour, Adler received word that the congregation would be welcome to have their big event at the church. And, moreover, they could use the church sanctuary as long needed. And, that need may be a while. Supply chain issues put the repairs as long as eight weeks. Temple Sinai members hope they will be home in time for the High Holy Days. Holding services at Emmanuel Episcopal is a mitzvah for Temple Sinai. Five years ago, just a mile from Temple Sinai, Hurricane Harvey ravished Emmanuel Episcopal. The church took in 4 feet of floodwater, creating so much damage, they couldn’t return to their original building. Temple Sinai leadership offered Emmanuel their sanctuary, sharing the temple’s sacred space for nearly two-and-a-half years. With time, Emmanuel members joined Temple Sinai’s High Holy Days choir and Temple Sinai members participated in the church’s Blessing of the Animals. Together, they did acts of kindness, forging friendships no one could have anticipated. Now, in Temple Sinai’s moment of need, Rector Vance Ousley was quick to the rescue. “While we were hosted by Temple Sinai’s congregation for a little over two years after being flooded by Harvey, we don’t see this as ‘returning the favor,’ Rector Ousley told the JHV. “We learned much from Temple Sinai about sharing holy ground generously, and what makes it truly holy is the sharing. We also know that we share a common mission with Temple Sinai to love G-d with all our heart, soul, strength and mind and to love our neighbors as ourselves.” “The same thing that worked there [at Temple Sinai], works here,” Berrie told the JHV. “The schedules just align, and we know everybody. It’s a match made in heaven.” Friday, July 8, was the long-anticipated first service for Rabbi Lipper, who took the move to Emmanuel Episcopal in stride. “As a rabbi, the bonds between Temple Sinai and Emmanuel Episcopal Church are a true blessing. Our communities have bonded in challenge and have elevated each other,” Rabbi Lipper told the JHV. While Rabbi Lipper visited Jewish institutions across the Houston area to get a feel for the lay of the land, Adler, Temple Sinai administrator Cindy Crump, members of the rabbi transition team, Berrie and others worked quickly to make such a move possible. Prayer books, kippahs, nametags, markers and flyers had to be moved. The food trucks supplying dinner had to be notified. Flowers needed to be delivered. And last of all, a Torah needed to be placed inside the sanctuary and contained within a portable Ark. Temple Sinai has somewhat of a diaspora Ark, a very special structure was made by B’nai Mitzvah students following Harvey. Therefore, on Sunday mornings while the church was holding services in the sanctuary, the students could take the Torah with them to the library or other places. Now, the Ark is a reminder of what has been and what can be. When temple members heard of the church’s offer to host them, they were excited to be seeing old friends. “We are blessed to have this friendship, ongoing, long going, and that we can be together again, under different circumstances,” Joan Adler told the JHV. “What a blessing!” Temple Sinai’s Ruth Herman lives at Eagle’s Trace, a senior living community; so does Carl Shannon, an Emmanuel Episcopal member. “[Shannon] always said thank you when they were having their services at our synagogue,” Herman told the JHV. “So, I went up to him the other day and said, ‘Thank you,’ and he said, ‘What for?’ I told him that Emmanuel was hosting us. And, he was so happy to hear it.” Longtime Temple Sinai member Diane Statham was with the temple throughout Harvey. “Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Houston has been extremely generous in allowing us to use their facilities as we had done for them when their building flooded under Harvey,” Statham told the JHV. “And, it comes at a wonderful time for us when we really need it – when we’re making a transition to a new rabbi.” Together, the church and the synagogue pulled off the celebration. At their temporary digs, Rabbi Lipper was welcomed by nearly 165 people from both congregations. Two food trucks – one serving Texas barbecue and the other offering American fare, such as hamburgers, french fries and chicken strips, were onsite. Inside, there were light Mediterranean dishes. And after services, there was an ice cream truck, as well as an assortment of other tasty treats. Once on the bimah, the rabbi opened by telling the congregation to smile, and then, to everyone’s delight, he snapped a selfie. Rabbi Lipper was joined by guest musical accompanist Barbara Loeser, a legendary song leader and educator within the Houston Jewish community. Rabbi Lipper and Loeser met decades ago when both were starting out on their career paths. “I am excited to have a home to be able to share with others,” Rector Ousley said. “While we are sad that [Temple Sinai’s] A/C is having to be replaced, it is particularly a blessing for us to share G-d’s love and our space with them, our beloved partners, especially in a time of transition as they, and we, welcome Rabbi David Lipper into our community.” Adler, who set everything in motion, is relieved. “That was the easiest call I’ve ever had,” she said. “Emmanuel Episcopal is family.”
