Of course, the JAV markets also cater to all of the usual porno genres including interracial, gang bang and BDSM but there has been a large increase over the last few decades in the demand for big-breasted content and mature men and women.

There are some exceptions to this and there are a dozen or so male Japanese porn stars who are in high(er) demand. The average fees for a male porn star are much less than their female colleagues can expect to earn which may partly be the reason for this disparity.
Male, female, performer or director, some of the biggest-names in the JAV industry enjoy a phenomenal amount of adoration from their fans. Annual events like the Japan Adult Expo are a big deal and queues for autographs and selfies can be competitive. Some fans are hobbyists in this regard and collect signatures and photos of porn stars in the same way that baseball fans in America collect trading cards.
A voluntary organisation formerly known as Viderin, most porn studios in Japan are members of the moral censorship group Ethics Organization of Video (previously Nihon Ethics of Video Association (NEVA)).
Adult content that bears the logo of the organisation must comply with Japanese censorship laws including pixellation of genitals; the amount of erect penis which is displayed can vary by studio and there is no hard and fast (pun intended) rule over this.
Content may not be promoted using any language that suggests the use of minors, and specifically high school girls.
Some producer try to get around this by using symbols and characters in place of one or more numbers in a films title to ‘trick’ audiences. A title like 1X-Year Old Gang Bang instead of 19-Year Old Gang Bang would pass censorship for example but could intimate the use of barely legal or younger teens.
The days of pubic hair being banned in pornography have been long gone for a while but porn released before the end of the 90s may still feature heavily pixellated areas around the genitals. Most modern porn produced in Japan carries a slimline digital mosaic which barely covers the ‘offensive’ areas. However, this kind of censorship is also in place for animated porn!
Interesting fact……the anus is not considered offensive and may be shown in its full glory until it is being, or about to be, penetrated!

There are literally thousands of porn studios in Japan ranging from the mainstream to the niche with independent film producers and large companies. Some release hundreds of titles each year whilst others may only produce a handful.

They are a powerhouse in the JAV world and at their peak several years ago were producing over 1,000 new releases every year.
