Japon Noir is a leathery, musky amber and patchouli heavy EdP which is rife with pleasant non-descript spices. Powdery, smoky outing that has similarities to Tom Ford's Bois Rouge, with a sustained presence of bergamot that adds a nice pungence bordering on fruitiness (thanks to the sweet port wine).

Overall, Japon Noir is a wonderfully smokey and sweet fragrance. It opens just a bit spicy & oriental on me, but quickly peels back to reveal it's smokey character which is maintained throughout the wear. As it dries, it becomes a bit sweet. The smokiness tames but still is present. JN has that tell-tale Tom Ford signature accord that's also in his Noir de Noir and Tobacco Vanille.

It's very, very rare and pricey. Haven't smelled it personally, but some on Fragrantica have compared it to Tom Ford for Men Extreme, which I have and enjoy very much, so I get the idea of what Japon Noir smells like.

Tom Ford's daredevil leather, Japon Noir, was one my favorites from the house that joined the club just in the beginning of Private Blend collection in 2007. Soon later it disappeared and it was not lucky as Bois Marocain to hit the market again. Ironically, most of discontinued works are richer than their descendant. So is Japon Noir.
I am not as crazy about the newer Tom Ford private blend releases, although Black Lacquer sounds interesting. What are your favorite discontinued TF fragrances? Seems like the original line of fragrances have some of the best!
Japon Noir and Amber Absolute remind me of a time where the Tom Ford really put its best foot forward before the Estee Lauder acquisition. Tom Ford himself is a visionary in fashion and the original private blends were a fantastic idea.

I have Japon Noir, and it doesn't smell like the description you posted. To me it is a floral, sort of a sweet chypre smell. Click to expand... I have Japon Noir, and it doesn't smell like the description you posted. To me it is a floral, sort of a sweet chypre smell. Well, guess that some ot the reviews I saw are wrong, then. Like I wrote, several point to a dark, smokey, animalic, spicy, leatherish, resionous, and amberish kind of scent.
I remember passing on it a long time ago because it wasn't quite "Japon-ese" enough or "Noir" enough for me, but in hindsight I haven't smelled anything quite like it since.
Japon Noir opens with a bang- an oriental with deeper elements of leather and pine resin - but calms down after an hour or so into something slightly sweeter. An edge of incense runs through its trajectory, lending warmth and a slight smokiness to the proceedings.
