A railway station is the gateway to the city, and thus in Japan, it can be said that the station is the "face" of the city itself. And among the numerous railway stations, a handful have a long history with invaluable cultural worth. In this article, I want to introduce to you stations with cultural property values representative of Japan.
Particularly in 1899, the government was preparing for the Russo-Japanese War and was financially unable to do so. The military (especially the Army) that learned the effectiveness of railway and the inconvenience caused by the autonomy of private railways during the Russo-Japan war expressed the need for nationalizing the railways.
Citing train delays during the Russo-Japanese War, the government announced that it was nationaliz ing the railways in 1906. A Ministry of Railways, formed in 1920, was put in charge of the Japanese Government Railways (JGR) and the newly-created Board of Tourist Industry tasked with promoting railways to attract foreign travelers.
And then it slowed down. To my utter surprise, it wasn't taking me to Hell. It gradually approached a dim-lit station, and pulled into a full stop. The doors opened up to a sign directly across from the platform, and it said "きさらぎ駅" in red, like one of those antique Japanese train station signage.
Japan's first train line opened nearly two decades later in 1872—twenty-nine kilometers of rail connecting Shimbashi in Tokyo with Yokohama. The railway became a symbol of Japan's eforts to Westernize, and was even depicted in ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
