Home Blog Pornography and Censorship: Why Do Japanese People Blur Their Porn?

If you have ever watched Japanese porn — and you probably have — you’d know that the juiciest parts are blurred or pixelated. But, you’d also know that Japanese porn has bravely ventured into genres where few have gone, from extreme BDSM to introducing some unheard of genres such as tentacles.
But why would they allow such juicy porn and censor it? Does it make sense? Well, this piece takes a deeper look at why the Japanese take out your juicy parts. Come along!
Censorship is prohibiting or suppressing any parts of a film, news, book, or any other type of media that are considered a threat to security, obscene, or politically unacceptable. Japan’s constitution forbids censorship. But in regards to pornography, censorship is allowed under article 175 of the criminal code of Japan.
Censorship in Japan has a long history dating back to the famous Edo period (1600–1868). During this time, the samurai-led government had banned Christian publications, both Japanese and Western. The criminal code of Japan prohibits anyone from sharing indecent materials. Due to this code, one can expect a penalty for showcasing obscene materials.
To circumvent this code, the Japanese adult content artists simply blur the genitalia of the actors. So, for example, when you begin to watch a Japanese porn film, the intimate parts are simply blurred by the production house.
Article 175, in 2004 and for the first time in over two decades, was used against the creator of Manga Missitsu , Suwa Yuuji. The Manga in question contains erotic art scenes, and considering the porn censorship in Japan and the criminal code of Japan, the creator was accused of sharing indecent material.
Pornography in Japan is very different from pornography in the western world . For example, what is considered pornography in the Western world is referred to as Adult Videos in Japan. So Japanese porn is referred to as Japanese Adult Videos, initialized as JAV.
In English, animated adult films are known as Hentai, while in Japan these films are known as adult anime. In addition, in Japan, exposure of pubic hair and other genitalia is considered a crime and can be punished by imprisonment.
Surprisingly the breasts are not part of these pornography rules in Japan , and therefore, you will find that they are not censored. The reason can be traced back to the origins of Japanese porn and the preserved Shunga prints.
Unlike in today’s world, where big breasts are eroticized, breasts have not been such a big deal in Japan. Therefore a painting containing breasts cannot be taken seriously as a painting containing exposed genitals.
Japan has some exciting fetishes when it comes to porn and to say that they are interested in different things is an understatement. For example, the Japanese have a fetish for tentacles, and no matter how interesting this is, they have more than just tentacles in their porn films.
The Japanese porn industry is as old as the humps. It dates back to 794 AD when an erotic art known as Shunga sprang up. The art contains sexual acts between men and men and between women and women.
During the second world war, Japan had banned all forms of pornography. So as much as the western has a fetish for Japanese porn, Japanese people also have a fetish for Western porn. Well, they have a name for it, and they call it Yamano.
Due to this fetish, some people blame the Americans for the development of porn in Japan. For example, American pornography exploded in the Japanese porn film industry when the Japanese discovered ‘Playboy.’
Asians are pretty conservative people. That is why it affects their porn industry, such that there is a lot of censorship and pixelation. The films also pass ethic checks before they can see the light of day.
Asians also push their children to concentrate on their studies and disregard surfing the internet. As a result, in most schools in Asia and more so in Japan, children cannot access porn materials, unlike in many western countries.
Asians are also very conservative people. As such, they are not the kind of people to talk about their personal factors in the open. This does not mean that they do not have interesting fetishes or fun things to do. Rather it means they prefer to keep the details private.
However, younger Asians, especially those who grew up in the United States, tend to be more open. They also tend to share their views openly. In Western countries, people don’t see any big deal when talking about their genitalia or other people’s genitalia. This is why unlike in the Asian world, the pornography industry is growing each day and introducing new things daily.
In Asia, things are very different. The best example of this is the adult film industry in Japan, where all genitals are censored in porn, no matter where it originates from.
So, why are there porn blurs in Japan when they can as well do away with porn? Why allow people to watch porn but limit how much they can see? The main reason people watch porn is to see the organs getting down and dirty.
As we have seen, some of the reasons for censoring porn in Japan are because the Japanese are pretty conservative people. Think of it as a cultural thing. Either way, things are what they are, and we can only enjoy JAV porn as it is. Of course, it’s possible to find uncensored Japanese porn, but it’s a question of whether it’s genuine Japanese porn or not.

Whacky and wonderful new porn trends - part 2
Well, if you spend considerable time browsing the internet, that’s probably because you watch porn. And if this is the case, then you must have occasionally come across Japanese porn. Also, you must surely know that Japanese porn is the fucking bombshell they not only mix up genres of extreme BDSM and role play but also they gave us a brand new category called tentacles and generally, the Japanese venture into territories few have dared to go as far as adult entertainment is concerned.
However, one thing that particularly stands out from Japanese porn for anyone with a pair of functioning eyes; the genitals are censored (dicks and pussies are covered by a mosaic) Some think that hiding of the actor’s baby-making bits is defeating the purpose of porn, to begin with, but it is advisable to think of the differences in culture which further manifests in law before castigating the Japanese as self-righteous.
Which brings us to the million-dollar question: why is Japanese porn censored? What is the whole point of censoring porn anyway? After some research, I came back with the following answers for you:
They say the law is the law, and Article 175 of the Japanese Penal Code prohibits the sharing of indecent materials. Now that sounds like a strange law considering the Japanese have one of the biggest porn industries, but Japanese artists of the adult entertainment variety have found an easy way to circumvent this law- blurring out the genitals. Up until the 1990s, showing of pubic hair was actually considered obscene, and if you look at some of the older porn from Japan, you will notice that the whole lower torso was blurred. There was even a rumor going around that some actors used to fake sex!
As of 5 years ago, the Japanese government was willing to take porn that was deemed to show ‘too much’ off the shelves. In 2004, Article 175 was used for the first time in 20 years against a manga artiste called Suwa Yuuji, who was convicted for distributing “indecent and explicit” material through his art. He pleaded guilty and was subsequently fined ¥500,000. While he took his appeal to Japan’s highest court, arguing that his art was not as explicit as the ones that were freely accessible from the internet, the Supreme Court of Japan didn’t buy his argument and actually tripled his fine to ¥ 1.5 million. While no other convictions have been made since Japanese porn producers resort to blurring genitals to avoid falling foul of the law.
They say a country’s laws reflect their morality, but it’s necessary to note that morality itself is subject to change throughout the years. Before the current porn policy came into effect, Japan had some of the most progressive attitudes towards sex. Well, it still does consider that it has some of the most liberal stances on pornography compared to other countries in East Asia where it is illegal to distribute our own porn. But the stance was even more progressive before they came into contact with the western world in the 19th century.
The arrival of westerners on the island brought with it the Western version of morality. It began to take root in the upper echelons of Japanese society as the government did its best to show the western world that Japan was an equally civilized society. Traditional Japanese practices that were deemed normal by the locals but appeared strange to foreigners were outlawed, the biggest casualty being shunga, a traditional art form that depicted largely heterosexual, ethnic Japanese couples with enlarged genitals engaging in intercourse. Shunga may have been outlawed for over 300 years now, but its legacy is still seen in the racist manga comics today, while Japan’s biggest export as far as adult entertainment is concerned- tentacles- can trace its roots to shunga. See? Japanese smut was not always a pixilated mess.
If the display of genitals is considered obscene and indecent, then why aren’t breasts censored in Japanese porn? I mean, anyone who considers genitals an obscenity would surely have a problem with a full display of nipples, right? Well, not really.
Japan has an interesting relationship with breasts. The #FreeTheNipple may not have engulfed the country as a movement, but you may find your answer as to why breasts are not forbidden in the country from observing the roots of Japanese porn.
As seen in shunga, there is hardly any difference between male and female chests regarding how they are depicted in the art. Actually, the only way to differentiate between the genders is through their dressing or genitals. Unlike modern art, which eroticizes big breasts, the shunga art is evidence that the Japanese were not as obsessed with the female pair. Actually, it was common to see Japanese women walking topless. Nudity was also not sneered at, and it was not uncommon to see nude members of the opposite sex at communal baths. As you can see, the Japs were not always opposed to the idea of nudity and full exposure of genitals. A combination of events brought the change of heart along the way.
Anyway, do pass by our Asian porn sites category and see much more of what Japan has to offer the adult entertainment world, including plenty of uncensored porn. Still, it’s crazy to think that a country with such a rich sexual history and a penchant for the more imaginative forms of erotic art can find something as straightforward as the human reproductive organs as obscene and indecent.

By contrast, proponents of VHS, Betamax's rival, welcomed adult content with open arms and, the legend goes, caused Betamax's demise.
