JAPAN is frequently touted as a country where old meets new — where ancient temples stand alongside gleaming skyscrapers, and Geishas wander among teenagers with multicoloured haircuts.
In this highly developed yet strictly traditional country, one ancient custom must be adhered to with rigour. That is the ritual of nude bathing in public hot springs.
In this old-meets-new setting, it seems fitting that I experienced ‘hadaka no tsukiai’ (‘naked communion’), for the first time with my elderly grandmother. I was a gangly 14-year-old with the body confidence of an awkwardly shorn poodle at a dog show.
My confidence was in no way helped by the fact that I was thrown into this cringe-worthy situation with my aunt, mother and younger sister, Stephanie.
We were all on a family ski trip to Niseko ski resort on the north island of Japan, Hokkaido. Grandma had told us about the abundance of hot springs, known as onsens, in Japan after she and Grandpa had travelled there a few years earlier.
After spending all day on ski chairlifts in howling blizzards and minus 15-degree weather, the idea of laying back in a natural spa with snow falling around seemed pretty damn inviting. The uncomfortable drawback was that we’d have to go naked.
Steph was 12 and clearly no more excited than I to expose her adolescent wobbly bits, or to view those of our older family members, in a public arena.
Sure, we’d bathed nude as children and occasionally saw our family members in birthday suits — but that was a long time ago.
As early teenagers we were reaching what was surely the developmental peak of self-conscious body awareness. Getting nude in front of our aunt and grandma, and possibly even Japanese strangers, was horrifying.
Mum had managed to quell our anxiety by assuring Steph and me that onsens were separate for men and women. We wouldn’t have to strip down in front of random men or, worse, my incessant tease of a male cousin.
We would also receive a “modesty towel” to cover ourselves as we entered the onsen, Mum told us. Unfortunately this towel turned out to be no larger than an A4 sheet of paper. I stared at my tiny scrap of linen trying to calculate how I could cover all areas of potential humiliation.
Exactly how much “modesty” was this towel supposed to engender?
The rule is that you must undress completely and shower before entering the water. You leave all your belongings in the change room and the only thing you can bring with you into the onsen is your modesty towel.
Mum, my aunt and Grandma had no issues stripping off as soon as we entered the change rooms and making a beeline for the showers near the entrance.
Fortunately, I didn’t have long to ponder the burning visual of their pale bottoms entering the water.
Steph and I were left figuring out how to cover our tits and front bums with one arm, while holding the modesty towel over our backsides with the other.
The showers were the next puzzle. In Japan, showers come out of the wall at knee height and are completely bewildering to foreigners until you notice the stool sitting on the tiles in front, which indicates you should sit down while showering.
We hastily crouched in front of the shower nozzle and splashed water over our bodies, before flapping the modesty towel over our privates again.
Some memories are so awkward that the brain deletes them in an attempt at self-preservation. Entering the onsen with my grandma, mum and aunt watching is one such memory. I hope I got it over with quickly.
I’m pretty sure a splashing wade into the deepest part of the onsen did the trick. My memory returns with me sitting in a dark corner of the outdoor rock pool that was our onsen, savouring the safety of neck-deep water.
After my humiliating nudie run, I finally began to relax. I leant back against a rock and looked up at the night sky. Snow was falling out of the dark onto my frozen hair. My body was deliciously warm.
They say the best way to forget a fear of public speaking is to picture everyone in the audience nude. Possibly the best way to overcome a fear of nude bathing is to remember that everyone else in the onsen IS nude — not just you.
After the initial horror of stripping down to our birthday suits in a public place, Steph and I had the same epiphany: we were all naked, and no one really cared!
Our audience had seen the show, it was underwhelming.
We were all now more concerned with slipping ice down each other’s necks and giggling as we dodged intermittent snowballs.
As the Japanese say, “A frog in a well does not know the great sea.”
If you travel to Japan without visiting an onsen, you will never know how liberating and relaxing the experience can be.
When I returned to Japan for another ski trip in my mid-20s, I dived straight in and made evening onsens a daily ritual. I didn’t even need the modesty towel.

If there is one thing I try to do in each country I visit it's get naked in a public setting (that and eat at a McDonald's ).
In Japan this task can be accomplished with relative ease (and without pesky legal fallout). Thanks to the country's geological makeup (a chain of volcanic islands), naturally occurring hot springs (or onsens (温泉) to the Japanese) provide a relaxing space for people to get naked and bathe together. Ironically these same onsens are what gave rise to Godzilla – fun fact.
Onsens come in a variety of flavors, and depending on the members of your party, your level of comfort seeing naked people, your level of comfort being seen naked by people, and the weather. You have the choice between indoors or outdoors, and mixed or segregated (sexes).
I would suggest an outdoors onsen as the indoor variety is reminiscent of a gym locker room (and I am permanently scarred from the things I have seen in these places). However, make sure you know what the deal is at your particular onsen prior to getting into your birthday suit and strutting about the grounds.
The following guidelines will help you avoid embarrassing yourself whilst enjoying an onsen in Japan.
Onsens come highly recommended by the locals, and for good reason. Whether you need to relax after a day of climbing volcanoes, clear your mind before a night of karaoke , or just want to creep on some naked Japanese people, there is no better way to do it than with a scalding hot onsen (yes, they are incredibly hot).

Interesting Expose of the Japanese Porn Industry
This is a semi expose style movie of the Japanese AV (Adult Video - their porn) industry. It's not a documentary, but takes on the form of actress' vantage into the industry she works in. Hiromi, a country girl has dreams of becoming a celebrity in Tokyo, and leaves her home soon after her graduation from high school. She has a dream to be recruited to be an actress in the streets of Tokyo. She finds work at an airport security, but one day her dream comes true, and she gets recruited by an owner of an unknown production company. He recruits her as a "model" but it's actually to be a "nude" model. It's not exactly what Hiromi was looking for, but she can't turn away from the opportunity. She gets a stage name of Mihiro and starts to appear as nude model followed by an appearance in AV movies. I believe that this is a movie based on semi-autobiographical novel written by none other than Mihiro herself. I've heard of Mihiro, but am not familiar with her works. From what I understand she was a very prolific workaholic in her field, and became one of the most successful AV actor, and nude model of her time. Through her work she's succeeded in becoming a regular actor and TV personality realizing her dream when she was in high school (source en.Wikipedia). As mentioned, I'm not too familiar with Mihiro's works, and only realized that this is a movie about her because I've heard of her name before. She probably had what it takes to obtain the success she has. Real life Mihiro shows up few times in this movie as well. It's an interesting look into the Japanese porn industry. As usual the Japanese seems to take their jobs deadly seriously, and the producers (at least the ones she's worked with) weren't sleazy at all, but went on with the production of their videos with dedication and professionalism. For people who aren't familiar with Mihiro, this is rather a slow movie, that doesn't have much ups and downs to its story. How this movie rates for you probably depends a lot on how familiar you are with Mihiro, and how much of a fan of hers you are.
