Against the background of an Australian desert, Sandy, a geologist, and Hiromitsu, a Japanese businessman, play out a story of human inconsequence in the face of the blistering universe. The end of the journey leaves no one capable of going back to where they started from.โ€”Anonymous

In an age when criticism has become debased and few people are really certain about what constitutes true worth in art, it is difficult to use the word "masterpiece" about any film. And yet that word is applicable here. At first this film appears to be just a bog-standard romantic love story, in the Hollywood mould, about two very different characters who meet and fall in love in unusual circumstances. Opposites attract, and so on.

However, as the story unfolds one becomes aware that there are many more levels to it than one would normally expect. Everything, from the title to incidental characters and the spectacular images of the desert, has been carefully thought out. It raises profound questions about a fashionable subject: identity, but also about love itself. Are these characters in love, or is it merely the terrifying starkness of the Australian outback that has thrown them together? Finally a third person enters the relationship, who complicates matters even further. Despite the romantic overtones of this film it is lifted, ultimately, by its absolute realism. Small gestures betoken whole story lines and glimpses of other characters throw the protagonists into sharp relief. Other influences begin to trickle through: Yasujiro Ozu, Peter Weir (in his early days), Japanese Haiku. And yet this is an entirely original work.

This film had a huge emotional impact on me, but it also made me think, about my own life and about the choices I've made. It did everything that a genuine work of art should do, and without any of the fanfare that we, in the West, have come to associate with art. Small wonder that it got little of the attention that in previous eras it would have attracted. Watch it, and discover that it is still possible to make a classic.

Lieutenant Mordaunt and his little sweetheart, Yum Yum, has many pleasant hours in the land of the Rising Sun. So winning are the ways of the little Japanese maiden, that Jack Tar falls very, very deeply in love with her. When love enters all else is forgotten, and thus, when the time for the departure of the fleet arrives, the lieutenant awakens to find that it was all a dream, and that it is now time to be up and doing and leave his little sweetheart behind him. The fleet returns to port, and Mordaunt goes home to his people. Staying at the house are three of his cousins, who greet him boisterously, for being female cousins, they look forward to jolly times with the breezy sailor. Mordaunt's thoughts still turn to the land of the Rising Sun and to his little sweetheart far across the ocean. To their great disappointment, the cousins find a great change in their once cheerful playmate. In place of the breezy sailor man is a poor love-sick swain, who can do naught else but sigh the hours away. The girls find the source of the trouble in the shape of a half-finished letter to Japan, and they decide to have some fun. Arraying themselves in Japanese clothes, they annoy their cousin considerably by appearing before him in the garb he loves so well, only to disappear again into a thicket or behind a tree. Finally, the tormentors are surprised to see their big, manly cousin burst into tears. From that moment Mordaunt becomes more and more melancholy, and in fact, his parents begin to entertain grave fears as to his health. Meanwhile the little Japanese girl beyond the seas has not remained idle. With the energy and enterprise of her race, she has decided to follow her lover beyond the seas. After a long and weary voyage, the little Japanese maiden arrives in Europe. Having carefully rehearsed her part beforehand, the winsome Yum Yum finds little difficulty in finding her way to her lover, who is, by this time desperately ill. At first Mordaunt does not recognize Yum Yum, on account of her European dress, which becomes her so well, but when she again dons the kimono and flaunts again her dainty fan, the lieutenant recognizes her, and all their troubles are forgotten.โ€”Moving Picture World synopsis
Original French title is undetermined.
It is a story along the lines laid down by the Romanticists
The tinting of these scenes, now purple, now green, now buff, etc., gives the story an unusual atmosphere; but one hesitates in wholly commending the brighter tints as successful. Several of them are almost garish. In the story, Yum Yum, a Japanese girl falls in love with a French naval officer. He is called back to France, meets his family again, but is discontented. His sisters learn his secret and dress in Japanese costume to have fun with him. The poor boy is so much in love that it makes him pathetically sick. Just before he is about to die, Yum Yum, who has followed him to Europe arrives. It is a story along the lines laid down by the Romanticists of the last century, calling up Rene memories of Chateaubrian and Lammertine. Taking it as a whole, acting and all, it seems grotesque in our scientific-age atmosphere. - The Moving Picture World, December 30, 1911
