I was on an study exchange program and i was put up with a very friendly Japanese family of 4 person

Everything was so awesome and the togetherness of the family, and some of the traditional way of doing up the dishes really did impressed me

However, on few occassions, I was asked to bath with the whole family at an onsen. I was feeling very shy and didn't seem to be brave enough to go with them

Is family taking bath together still a popular thing to do in modern Japan? Just for my knowledge, what is the best way should I react to their request.. that is should I accept and go with them to the onsen? and any thing I have to take note over there?

Cheers

I'm a guy, and had no problem going to an onsen with my two brothers and host father, or my friends at school. It's not considered unusal, but its not as common as it used to be.

What I love the Ofuro and Onsen. I would set up camp probably if I could. I say relax and have fun and just be careful where you swing your sword.

Seriously, bath houses and onsens are a lot of fun. There's no need to be shy but I know a first-timer can be nervous. Once, you get past that then you'll see how fun and relaxing they can be....especially they have various types. I remember one Onsen that I went to that had a coffee-smelling bath, rose one, one with sake pouring into it, a magnetic one, man the list can go on and on. The point is I think foreigners take it for granted and they are still popular with Japanese, it's calmed down a bit but it's getting popular slowly again.

I have visited onsen with my guy friends and it's really clean both your body and relax the mind! especially if it is in the winter.. I am so taken by the whole concept

the only issue is that my host family consisit of their parents and a sister of my guy friend.. so there's 2 ladies within the group of 5

think I am just not prepared for a mixed onsen....

The ladies might go to one for only women if they want to.

If they don't, just try not to stare them, and enjoy the relaxation!

I would have had a different opinion for a female exchange student, though.

I seriously doubt they are inviting you to a mixed onsen

Really don't try and stare too much if they did invite you to a mixed onsen.

Are you sure it was a mixed (konyoku) onsen? That would be pretty unusual these days, even for families.

I'd do it, since it's easy enough to modestly hold a towel in front of you while you're walking around. So people won't see much of your important parts anyway.

It's not like people are there to stare at your equipment. I've never felt as clean as I did after an onsen trip, even with my host family. Even going in with my host uncle and brother, I never spoke to them outside of the locker room area since people are bathing to relax. Plus there's the massive drinking that seems to follow every onsen trip I was on...good times.

I prefer Hungarian bath houses. I dont see what the point of being naked is.

In the mixed bath houses its not uncommon for people to wear a towel or bathers

Hahahahaha!
I don't live in Japan so I don't have a chance to go for one.

And, I'm not so pretty so I won't have the confidence to go for one. Hehe.

Viewers were left reeling by a disturbing scene in the penultimate episode of Channel 4's new nail-biting drama Kiri.
Wednesday night's installment saw one of the show's central characters, school boy Simon, walk in on his mother Alice in the shower and refuse to leave - before ripping the towel from her naked body.
The teenager is suspected by his parents of murdering his foster sister, Kiri, and has started to exhibit strange behaviour in recent episodes.
Kiri was murdered in the first episode with her convict father Nate as the prime suspect, before it emerged that Simon had been lying about his whereabouts on the day she was killed.
In the 'sinister' scene aired on Wednesday night, Simon went into detail about a sexual encounter with a schoolmate as his mother, dressed in just a towel, begged him to leave the room.
Disturbing scenes: Simon walked in and watched his mother in the shower in the penultimate episode of Kiri on Wednesday night, causing viewers to label the series as 'sinister'
But before he left, the teen ripped off her towel and stormed downstairs - an act that viewers labelled 'sinister'.
Married Alice had been showering after coming back from a tryst with her secret lover when her son barged into the bathroom.
After first she asked him to leave gently but as he told her about the school friend who let him 'touch her all over', she pleaded with him to go.
Viewers found the seemingly never ending scene uncomfortable to watch, and took to Twitter to call it 'creepy' and 'disturbing'.
One person took to Twitter to write: 'The mother and son in Kiri are seriously sending me some STRANGE vibes.'
Viewers were disturbed by the strange scene, with many branding it 'creepy'
'That lad is a psychopath,' another posted.
A third said: 'Right this foster family are getting stranger by the minute wtf.'
After Simon stormed out of the house, Alice tracked him down to quiz him about where he had been on the day Kiri died.
His original alibi was that he was at school, but his teachers later revealed that he hadn't turned up to classes that day.
Simon spoke about a sexual encounter with a schoolmate before ripping a towel off his mum, leaving her naked
He is now the prime suspect in his foster sister's murder after it emerged that he lied about his whereabouts on the day she died
Simon assured his mother that he had simply been walking around town and insisted that CCTV cameras would corroborate his story - but it later emerged that there was no footage of him in town that day.
The police called the family in for further interviews after revealing that the last time Kiri was seen on camera was when she was heading back to their house.
Simon's father Jim told his wife that he was starting to believe that his son was guilty, and even suggested going to prison for him so Alice could get him counselling.
Alison had just comeback from sleeping with the man she'd been having an affair with, which Simon said he knew about
She begged her son to leave but he refused and continued to brag about his sex life
Jim said: 'I don't like the way he looks at you sometimes. I think I need to say I did it. I say I did it and then you put all your efforts into sorting him out. It's called taking responsibility.'
But Alice wouldn't let either of them take the blame and deleted all pictures of Simon and Kiri from her phone, before lying to the police by saying she'd seen someone else hanging around their home on the day Kiri died.
Simon and Nate remain the prime suspects for Kiri's murder as both don't have alibis for the day she died.
Former drug addict Nate was banned from seeing Kiri by social services but her grandparents allowed her to visit him as they believed he had changed.
Kiri died in episode one when her social worker Miriam, played by Sarah Lancashire, allowed her to visit her parents who let Kiri see her convict father
The murder mystery will come to an end next week as its revealed who killed the child
After she went missing Nate went on the run, but the police later tracked him down and he was charged with her murder.
But now it's been revealed that Kiri was last seen near her home, Nate may be innocent after all.
Kiri continues next Wednesday at 9pm on Channel 4
