I've had experiences with the workbook for a college text on Japanese and it was almost worthless. This is not, the exercises match the book well and have some real value. I recommend this book. Not the best in the world, but up to the task. Recommended.
I own several Kana workbooks. This one is average. Not as instructive as Rita Lampkins, not as comprehensive as Mitamura's two book set on hiragana and katakana, but OK. I have the text as well and there is not really that much of a connection between the two. So you can use the workbook on its own. I don't own the tapes that give aural reinforcement to some of the exercises in the workbook. They are too expensive.
Great beginners book for young children!!
I have taught Japanese out of several books, and I would not recommend this one, especially for beginner Japanese students. It is not very user friendly, and there is not an answer key for any of the books.
I use this textbook to teach Japanese for teenager.

Total beginners beware
I purchased this book as part of a birthday present for my 15 year old daughter who has started taking an interest in Japanese language and culture, mostly due to learning a few phrases for her karate training, and an interest in Japanese gardens. So I thought it would amuse her to try a few basic characters and phrases. Unfortunately I did not realise that this book has an optional tape and other learning resources that need to be used with it. I was also silly enough to not open the pack of Amazon books I had bought for over a week, my daughter being away with her grandparents, and I trusting that Amazon would deliver what I ordered with no problems (which they did). So unable to send this book back, I will have to donate it to charity. I will not say the book is bad, it is obviously well written by quality authors. But I was (unintentionally) mislead by the first glowing review. The book gives no basic overview of the Japanese language, and indeed, after the first couple of pages there is almost no English in the book at all. If you are looking for something that your children can 'self learn' from I am afraid they may find this, as I did, utterly incomprehensible. I would recommend this book only for teachers, or people who have a a range of support mechanisms in place. Perhaps I missed it on Amazon, but I did not realise there was an accompanying tape. It says in the book this is optional, but I am not so sure. It also appears that this book needs other books in the series to support it. Not for complete beginners, I am afraid.

Recommendable
Very good workbook for begginers. Well written, clear, with a lots of exaples, place to hand exercises. You will know all katakana and hiragana for sure!

This series is an amazing and overall outstanding approach to learning Japanese. I ordered it last summer and was done with the first book in a week. I am now in school, but have had enough time to finish the second and am currently on this one. This book's use of kana and kanji with furigana (kana under the kanji for pronunciation) are extremely effective with reading and learning to write. This book also is great with grammar and helps teach a lot of vocabulary. For anyone that has learned another foreign language and understands it (as I know Spanish, German, and English), this is a breeze; I would also reccomend this to new learners as well. This book is fun and easy to learn at any level. I highly reccomend this book to anyone that is interested in learning or even getting a better command of the Japanese.

Learn Japanese well with this book
Not as good as the first two. I'm currently on this textbook for a japanese GCSE. Content is fine overall however there is an absense of colour in these books whereas the others did have colour. Not a big change just something to take note of. Very good for learning Japanese though, presents it in an easy to read way with excelent structure Content-excellent Quality- moderate Overall- worth the buy for learning Japanese
