A vertical crease at center. A couple small hole repairs from reverse. A few ight spots, very minor rubbing and
soiling. Fine sharp line work and vibrant, unfaded color with several subtle mica embellishments.
The printing of this shunga is of an extremely high quality with excellent use of metallic pigments and gauffrage.

Fine impression (with metallic pigments), very good color and condition. Slight vertical centerfold, very slightly trimmed, thin backing, minor marks and flaws.
“On a sultry summer afternoon, a pair are about to take their pleasure on top of the man’s black and white plaid kimono on the porch near a garden. A stone water basin with a bamboo scoop can be seen in the background.”
Gian Carlo Calza on this design: “... In the second print, two lovers lie half-naked on the veranda surrounded by a garden, their light cotton kimono (yukata) and a round fan on the ground reveal that it is summer.”
Another impression of this design is in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art.

Very Rare Hokusai - Shunga - Gods of Intercourse - Rape - Merchant's Daughter - 1821.
Antique Japanese color woodblock Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). Shunga (Erotic picture). Date: 1821.
Series:' Manpuku Wagojin' (Gods of Intercourse). Size: 10 3/4" x 8 2/5" inches. Fine impression, color and very good condition.
Very minor soiling and rubbing, some very small thinning spots. Literature: Calza: Hokusai, p.211 (IV.13).
Unlike other erotic books, which concentrate on tales of the pleasure quarters, Manpuku Wagojin is an example of the enpon (erotic tales in colour) form and describes stories concerning ordinary men and women. In this case the story involves Osane, daughter of the rich merchant Sazayama Arisuke, and Otsubi, daughter of the ruined merchant Kawanuya Hinbei.
The tale is an ironic variation of moralistic stories: Otsubi learns to take advantage of her sexual attraction in order to gain an important position in society, while Osane, who grew up without a proper awareness of her own femininity end up as a depraved prostitute. The explicitly anti-Confucian message is that the achievement of a certain social status depends entirely on one's skill in exploiting sexual recources.
This design shows Osane at the lowest stage of prostitution. She is reduced to streetwalking and is shown here spread-eagled on the ground after a group-rape. In spite of the brutality of the act, the picture in fact suggests that Osane has experienced a certain pleasure, underlined by the number of paper handkerchiefs strewn around her, conventionally used in erotic prints to suggest female satisfaction. The tousled hair indicates her depraved nature and is a sign that she will come to a sorry end.
Like Hokusai's famous "Octopus"-design this shocking scene creates a same ambivalent feeling
and is among Hokusai's best work in shunga !

“A couple on a boat – the woman uses the umbrella to shield her and her merchant-class lover against onlookers.
The title on the print in the upper right reads: ‘A Geisha on Assignment on the Sumida River ’ (Sumidagawa yoseru no geisha). The attribution to Eisen is undisputed because in other designs from the set the character sen from Eisen is included on a kimono hem.”
“...Eisen carried the decadent trends of Bunka-Period figure design to their extreme, producing several hundred deft prints featuring courtesans, geisha and girls of the town in contemporary settings. Since all of his figure work is permeated with an erotic flavor, it is not surprising that he excelled in shunga. In this print an Edo boatman is seen dallying with a stylish geisha under a parasol in the summer. As in many shunga prints, the amatory conversation of the participants is recorded in detail.”

Full size. Very minor marks and flaws only. Very nice state overall.
“A young girl on an outing is waylaid by a robber. She hides her face in shame and in the background a man, perhaps her manservant, flees. The aiban format becomes fashionable around this time. Forrer (2004: 178) points out that the aiban format was virtually absent from Kiyonaga’s oeuvre, whereas it constituted the second most important format in the work of Utamaro. It is possible that the aiban in illustrations 32 to 34 are part of the same set, but this has yet to be confirmed (Chris Uhenbeck).”
In the past this design has been attributed to Katsukawa Shuncho (act. c.1780s-early 1800s). The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (the most important in the Netherlands) has another impression with the robber wearing a red jacket of this design in their collection.
