Japanese Encephalitis Outbreak Declared National Health Emergency as Cases Surge

In the heart of India, a silent crisis is unfolding. Japanese Encephalitis, a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, has surged to unprecedented levels, prompting the government to declare it a national health emergency. The disease, which affects the brain and spinal cord, has claimed over 100 lives this year alone, with cases reported in 20 states. The surge is attributed to heavy rainfall and flooding, which have created ideal breeding grounds for the mosquitoes that carry the virus.

Health experts warn that the situation could worsen if preventive measures are not taken. The virus is particularly dangerous for children under five and the elderly, with fatality rates reaching up to 50%. Vaccination campaigns have been intensified, but the scale of the outbreak has outpaced the efforts to contain it.
