Japanese police have arrested a mother-and-son duo for allegedly making more than 3,200 no-show hotel cancellations, costing the hotels $1 million while collecting reward points worth $22,000, reports said Wednesday.
Police in the western region of Kyoto confirmed to AFP on Wednesday they had taken into custody a 51-year-old mother and her 31-year-old son in connection with making fake reservations in November at three hotels, causing damage worth about 95,000 yen (€791).
But the charge might be the tip of the iceberg, with local media reporting the duo made 3,250 no-show hotel cancellations across Japan over a year via an online booking service, causing damage totalling 115 million yen (€958,076) to those hotels.
Through the transactions, they collected digital loyalty points worth 2.5 million yen (€208,277), according to national broadcaster NHK and other major media.
"Police are continuing their investigation, believing that (the suspects) targeted hotels with high consumer points and repeatedly cancelling their reservations," NHK said, citing unnamed sources.

A woman in Nigeria has shocked many after she admitted of luring her only biological son to bear kids with her.
Mrs Veronica Lorshe, from Howe, Ugee Council Ward, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State admitted that she executed her devious plan to save her second marriage.
After losing her first husband in a tragic accident, the 47-year-old woman married Sebastian Iorshe, 44, whom after 8 years of marriage, they were still unable to get a baby.
β€œI am not a loose woman. I am just a woman who loves her husband very much and didn’t want to lose him.
β€œI did what I did to save my marriage, though I feel guilty about it. It was not easy but I slept with my first son from my first husband so that I could give my husband a child. But rather than sustaining my marriage, the plan has scattered it and I have lost it,’’ she revealed to local media.
β€œI started by buying good things for him, sleeping together on the same bed, playing with his manhood and gradually one thing led to another. There was a time I asked him if he had tested sex before and he said no. I compelled him to take an oath not to disclose it to anybody.
β€œI said I would teach him sex. I ensured that I did that during my ovulation period. I never disclosed the reason for this but deep in my mind, I wanted to test my fertility,’’ she continued.
A month later, she discovered that she was actually pregnant and decided to share the news with her husband, Sebastian.
When contacted by local media, Sebastian denied responsibility of the pregnancy quoting a medical report that revealed he had low sperm count and therefore could not father a child.
β€œI don’t want to believe the story she is narrating to you that her son is responsible for it, though I have not suspected her or seen any sign that an outsider was dating her.
β€œBut the truth is that I’m not responsible for the pregnancy and will not allow her into my house. It is a shame for me to be associated with a mess like this,’’ he said.Β

A mother woke up in the night to find her 14-year-old son raping her, a court heard.
Initially she thought it was a dream, but after realising the "enormity of the situation" she began screaming.
Her teenage son, who is on medication for ADHD, had been having behavioural problems in recent weeks, Preston Crown Cour was told.
For some years he had been in the habit of climbing into bed with his mother, but the boy - from Blackpool and now aged 15 - denied a charge of rape.
The prosecution said the woman had been asleep before waking and realising the "enormity of the situation, that her son was in the process of having sex with her".
In her police interview - which was taped and played in court, the woman said she was "trembling from the inside" after the alleged attack.
The teenager, who cannot be identified, left the courtroom while the interview was played.
Judge Pamela Badley explained to the jury he did not want to be present during the interview and that she had given him permission to leave.
Speaking of what happened, the woman told police: "I just know when I opened my eyes he was there. I don't even know what I said. He scuttled out of the room and didn't say anything.
"I just sat there holding my covers, screaming and thinking 'what the hell's just gone on?'
"Does he know what he is doing? Is he aware? Now I am actually thinking
