Class was time-consuming. Material wasn't super difficult, but take lots of notes to be prepared for exams. Each week had readings, inquizitive work, news quiz, and lecture quiz. Didn't like format of lecture quiz. Lecture was embedded in quiz requiring you to watch 70+ minutes and answer questions in one sitting. 3 exams done in lockdown browser.
Easy class but she was extremely off-putting and rude. I have a family member with cancer and asked for take the test a day after it was due for appointment reasons. I basically had to argue with her to get it. I saved the emails for proof. Just skip her class. Her English sucks but she grades so heavily on essay questions too. Putang ina mo.
Get ready to read Lots of homework Test heavy
Class is great for the ignorant lower division students who only know of GE courses. Inconvenient to those trying to graduate. Class is technically an Easy A but feels like a synchronous course being limited to weekly material. Should have access to most content from the beginning otherwise kills the purpose of asynchrony. Avoid if you're a senior.
Tough grader Clear grading criteria Graded by few things
Easy A. HW assignments are on Inquizitive, but quizzes & tests must be taken through Lockdown Browser. Tests consists of multiple choice & short answer questions. There are also a couple of discussion posts. Professor was organized & clear with her prompts. Usually takes about a day to respond to emails if you need to contact her.
Easy A class. If you do good on the 2 exams, you don't need to take the final! The exams are lockdown browser exams but its not hard at all. Homework due every once in a while and was quick and easy to do. I would definitely take this class again.
Inquisitive assignments require reading, plus 7 2-page essays on federalist papers but graded very inconsistently. I do well in all my writing classes but never got higher than a B+ on these assignments. You really have to work for your grade in this class, her exams are hardly on the stuff you read about or review, wording is weird on exams too
Lots of homework So many papers Tough grader
Weekly Inquizitive Assignments + 7 short papers. The papers are graded very inconsistently with the same level of work getting very different grades. There's 3 tests during the semester that are very dense and needed A LOT of preparing for. The tests include are half multiple-choice and half-short essay. The essay questions can be confusing
Professor Janice Shiu offers quite a lot of extra credit throughout the semester. Everything about this course was satisfactory, except for the final exam. I was sitting at 91.75% before the exam, after it was entered, I dropped to 83.40%. The class average for this exam was 65.5%.. this explains a lot. Study guide for the final is not sufficient
Get ready to read Skip class? You won't pass. EXTRA CREDIT
She had 10 inquizitive assignments, and 3 tests. Easy to follow along in class and always answers any questions you might have. She says attendance is mandatory but it ends up being extra credit. As long as you study/memorize the powerpoints she posts a week before the test, you'll be good. Just make sure to be as clear as possible on short answers
Prof Shiu is a good choice. Class wasn't difficult but definitely required some cramming to do well on exams. Workload is fair and she doesn't dive too deeply into political theories to ensure that mainly facts are stated. I was often lost in class but I scored well on exams. If memorization is your forte, then this class is definitely for you.
ACCESSIBLE OUTSIDE CLASS Clear grading criteria
Prof Shiu knows the subject matter extremely well and her classes are very easy to pass if you're willing to put in the work. The grade is mostly based on tests but it's verbatim to the study guide so as long as you do the guide you'll be fine! There are weekly online quizzes and extra credit is offered throughout the semester. Great class!
Skip class? You won't pass. TEST HEAVY EXTRA CREDIT
1. She doesn't know the subject matter. The textbook company writes the lectures and slides, and writes and grades the homework. 2. If you DO know the subject matter, and try to correct her, you will be berated and told to read the book. 3. She is highly political, far left of center, and it shows constantly. If you are conservative, come prepared.
2 Midterms + final, multiple choice and short answer. Not too hard if you do the study guides. Attendance is MANDATORY, -5pts per unexcused absences. She gives extra credit, there are weekly inquizitive assignments + one current events paper. I didn't pay attention most of her lectures and still managed to get a B.
ACCESSIBLE OUTSIDE CLASS EXTRA CREDIT Would take again
Weekly inquizitive assignments, 2 exams + final. Multiple choice & short answer. Current Events paper. Must purchase online access to do homework. She lectures straight out of the book and adds her own info that she knows. Everything isn't that hard. Do the study guides for exams and you'll pass ez. If you're good at memorizing this class is ez
Hard to follow her class, if you do the homework and study you should be fine. She lectured a lot and when you are in class she will randomly give out participation papers. Though you do not need to attend I highly recommend that you do. Shes reasonable and will work with you if things come up.
Get ready to read Participation matters LECTURE HEAVY
Expect to have homework, a paper, a presentation. Just study for the test. she grades harder on the short answer you need you be very detailed.
Tough Grader LOTS OF HOMEWORK TEST HEAVY
All homework online, be aware of the due date. Attendance is counted towards final grade. Tests require you to really understand the material so read the book/pay attention in lecture. Final is cumulative and half multiple choice the other half short answer, which goes for her 2 midterms as well. Not an easy A class but not too hard either.
Tough Grader EXTRA CREDIT LECTURE HEAVY
Professor Shiu is a great professor! Her lectures were never boring. For a person who hates anything related to government/politics, she truly made the class very interesting. I was always engaged and excited to learn because of her lectures. The class consists of Weekly online HW assignments, a presentation, 2 Midterms, and a final.
Skip class? You won't pass. Clear grading criteria EXTRA CREDIT
All homework is online. One assignment - a presentation and paper combo. Two midterms and a noncumulative final. Exams are challenging, but she provides study guides. Many opportunities for extra credit. Attendance counts towards your grade! She is very nice, but it may not seem that way if you don't initiate conversation. Responsive to email ?'s.
Tough Grader Skip class? You won't pass. EXTRA CREDIT
Quizzes were really tough at first, but seemed to get easier after the first few weeks. She cares about her students, but you may not notice it unless you make the effort to talk to her yourself. For exams - multiple choice and essay questions are administered separately. Hefty Literature Review - start it early! Several extra credit opportunities.
