1. What was your first memory of riding a bike?
I remember my first bikes (and actually all the others ;-) ) and my first "new" bike: a black/yellow BMX. I must have been about 6 years old.
2. Who taught you how to ride a bike?
First with training-wheels, then they were dismantled. We lived in a cul-de-sac in a village at the time, perfect for learning to ride a bike.
3. What is the greatest achievement you’ve done on a bike?
I rode my first Stevens CycloCross race after 3 weeks in possession of a cyclocross bike…without any experience on a CX or MTB.
When I was 12 or 13 years old I was on vacation with my cousin and uncle and rode 250km in 2 days. I still find that very impressive looking back.
4. What was the longest day trip (km) you’ve done?
I went with my CX bike off-road from Hamburg to Sieverstedt (Schleswig), which was about 165km - a gravel tour, so to speak. In hours, it was probably my longest ride and unfortunately was only 5 - 8 °C.
5. When did you first hear about the Kandie Gang?
Kerstin probably knows that best: Corona time, Kerstin in Hamburg instead of Spain, me with a lot of time and desire..and now that’s almost over year!
6. What does the Kandie Gang mean to you?
During a CX race the other day I had "Let Down" by Radiohead in my head- probably not a Schwung song- but it gave me mental strength.
Meute: Hey Hey (quite possibly the best Schwung Song!)
Dennis Lloyd: Nevermind ( also a good Schwung Song ;-) )
8. A snack, for on the go, that you can't live without?
Clif Bar: Crunchy Peanut Butter always works!!
9. Road, CX/gravel or mountain bike?
10. What advice has helped you the most?
I find this question is the hardest to answer because advice from so many different perspectives has helped me: the team, cycling friends, family.
I was very excited at the last Stevens Cup in Buchholz 2020, my 3rd cross race. There are these ditches…leading up to them, there was a woman standing on the side suddenly giving me tips on how to ride them. I was impressed that she so self-confidently was giving me support. Then I asked her: she's an experienced rider but didn't compete herself but, in the CX world: everyone is simply accepted.
It's a bit like a big family: tips and help and new friends. My friend also helped me that day: "Why are you nervous? Are you enjoying the cross? Enjoy the race! Take the challenge!" He helped me a lot to turn on my head and take the stress away: Racing is fun!
I think, in the total sum of things, Alex Meier has given me the most :-). Whether along the race course or in training: I am very grateful for all his advice , explanations and training tips!
